I'm willing to bet that I will never have as good an experience as I did in FFXI from CoP to Abyssea.
FFXIV is like Methadone for an old addict and it's getting me by, hell even enjoyable for a bit, but no game has ever or probably will ever capture the feelings of beating DM, getting a R/E/M weapon, completing Nydus 2.0...etc.
I don't like WoW, PSO, Rift, LotR, EQ, GW, Aion or any of these other @#%^s. It sucks, but we all get older and things tend to just suck compared to ten years before. Unless you were in prison or something.
ya know its funny, I never felt like I was one to get stuck in the past. PS3 holds some of my favorite games of all time (The Last of Us, Valkyria Chronicles) and the old greats people hold on high I dont find as amazing in comparison, while still great (Ocarina of Time)
However with MMOs, I basically can't stand modern design. Completely vertical gear progression, disposing of everything every 6 months. Solo grinds to level cap, cuz !@#$ grouping who would want to team up in an MMO (FFXIV has FATE grinds which are sort of like abyssea grinds, except that you have to just stop exping for large portions of time while you wait for a FATE to pop), spamfest combat (I thought FFXIV1.18-1.23 had far better combat than ARR), and the emphasis on dodging. Its not that dodging is hard (titan is a joke and I cant believe people struggle with him) its just annoying. Its this weird mix between action game and RPG and the only MMO to do it right was Tera, but that game was killed by one of the worst quest grinds ever and the combat that was just spammy outside of the well done dodging mechanics. I got into MMOs because I loved RPGs, so using dodging as a mechanic never sat well with me.
