I would like to adress a very important point that should be added to this thread. It was stated above

"At level 75, I use the following rough guideline for normal shots:
R Att > R Acc > STR > AGI
For Holy Bolt usage I go by:
MND > R Acc (I swap out a lot of R Acc for MND) > R Att > STR > AGI
For Weapon Skill usage I like to go:
STR > R Att > R Acc > AGI."

Don't confuse this with end game rng, this is a good guideline to follow for XP/Meripo partying but something here needs to be addressed.
Ex. fighting Kirin.

First off we need to look at the role of a blm. Blm is a DD job for kirin, unfortunately Kirin has a very high magic resistance. That being said a blm may cast say Tornado 2 8 times in a row and the damage for those 8 spells could be say 150, 200, 800, 315, 175, 250, 1150, 130. Since Black magic is one of the best ways to take Kirin down quickly you have to rely on a steady supply of skillchains for the blms to magic burst. Ranger's are great for Kirin for 2 reasons, they can steadily DoT Kirin to help beat down his regen and they can close both Light and Fragmentation Skillchains. Magic Bursts greatly increase a blms chance of getting past magic resistance, if you can keep them steady one blm casting Tornado 2 8 different times will look more like this with Magic Bursts 1300, 1250, 800, 150, 975, 1115, 1500, 750. Also Kirin has a high defense, Rngs might be able to bust 2-3k easily on imps in Caedarva Mire, but the "average" ranger sidewinder or slugshot on kirin is 400-700 dmg, the uber rng dmg on kirin is 800-1200, Elvaan's have been known to do more then this but I've never personally seen a rng break 1200 with the lates updates to rng. But now comes my point.
A Ranger with using the attk > acc > str > agi guideline will hit kirin 6/9 times to get TP on average, sometimes you can do better with selenes bow on new moon. And then a Rng using sidewinder on kirin will hit 3/4 times with sidewinder sometimes less sometimes more. So let's do some quick math, rng with average attack gear solo WS's...
Sidewinder 1 = miss
Sidewinder 2 = 500
Sidewinder 3 = 550
sidewinder 4 = 450
net dmg off of 4 sidewinders = 1500
ok now lets take the 1st 4 blm nukes added to this, 1465
net dmg = 2965
ok now change the rngs gear up to acc > agi > attk > str
now the rng hits 6/6 - 6/7 shots to get 100 tp, and hits 4/4 to 4/5 sidewinders with average dmg being around 300 ish closing skillchains
sidewinder 1 = 250
sidewinder 2 = 300
sidewinder 3 = 350
sidewinder 4 = 300
+ an additional effect of 20-100 for the skillchain but well leave that out for now.
net dmg off of 4 sidewinders = 1200, just 300 less then using dmg gear
add this with the first 4 blm spells with MB listed above, 3500
we have a net dmg = 4700
4700 - 2965 = ((1735))
ok, now lets say those 1st 4 sidewinders all closed skillchains as well, aside from the one that missed, we will swap the 1st blm spell from both lists to make up for that missed sidewinder. total blm dmg now = 2350
2350 + 1500 = 3850
4700 - 3850 = ((850))

Another Variable to look at is if you have that uber dmg gear and race, which will still limit your accuracy to about the same as the average attack gear but instead of netting 1500 dmg, you might net 3600 dmg in 4 sidewinders. But there is one more thing to consider, when fighting monsters like kirin you will usually have around 3-4 blms hitting these MBs every time.
3600 - 1500 = 2100
so we have a differnce of 2100 dmg on your sidewinders with uber gear
now lets go with the lesser of the average blms, say 3 are bursting.
1st scenario, 1465 X 3 = 4395
MB Scenario X 4, 3500 X 3 = 10500
MB Scenario 2 X 3, 2350 X 3 = 6050
Final Conclusion 4 MB will net more dmg then 0 or 3 MB no matter how much gear you have.
10500 - 6050 > 2100

So I'll leave this post with this: end game rng figthing HNMs and Gods please use the following setup
Racc > Agi > Rattk > STR
Xp/Meripo us the setup Rattk > Racc > Str > Agi

At no time did my post cover strategies for Kirin, so the rough guideline I gave wouldn't apply. You forgot that prior to my above statement, I had said this.
Quote:
As a Ranger approaches level 75, this priority order starts to change. This is mainly due to the final Accuracy Bonus, and more parties fighting T-VT (Tough to Very Tough) monsters, which translates into lower monster evasion relative to the players ranged accuracy.

This of course insinuates I was talking about exp. No one should be foolish enough to apply their gear set-ups for relatively weak mobs (meripo) to those of the high level Gods. Changes will be made.

I honestly have no idea why you decided to show that Magic Bursting on Kirin is a decent way to bring him down. (Let's not kid ourselves, it is FAR from the best way to take him down. Get a ton of uber melees, BRDs, and go to town for a three minute kill.) Further, I'm not sure of the reason why you feel you need to demonstrate why doing the Skillchains (which is how my LS still does Kirin) is important when your LS strategy calls for that. I should think that the Rangers who play this job are well aware that a landed Slugwinder on Kirin to close Frag, or Arching Arrow to do light is more damaging than trying to hit some uber number.

Um... in no way was i trying to correct you or say that you were saying something wrong, I was just adding to the post so that people dont get confused and think that Attk first is always the way to go, my post was to help people distinguish between when they should go attack and when they should go accuracy. And I was just using Kirin as a example, not all Linkshells are capable of taking him down in 3 minutes nor are they equipped to do so especially on Phoenix server. So let me add that the above strat applies to more then just Kirin, Kirin was just an example, and this is a method to use if you are in one of these linkshells that still takes 45 minutes + to kill Kirin if you choose to apply this method to Kirin. I am just trying to help people realize that doing more dmg themselves isn't always a good thing, especially if it lowers the damage the total Linkshell is putting out.

and furthermore, anyone who is in one of these great LSs that can beat down kirin in 3 minutes would not be looking at this post for help chances are they know what to do

Nice guide :D

Just one piece of equipment that you missed and I think you should probably add is the "Diabolos's Torque" (lol...nice grammar, Square...). It's one of the reward choices from completing Diabolos Prime post-CoP 3-5, and has the following stats:

Diabolos's Torque
(Neck) All Races
Ranged Accuracy + 8
Dark Weather: Ranged Accuracy - 8
Dark Weather: Ranged Attack + 8
Lv. 70 All Jobs

Personally I use it most of the time, especially in Dynamis when the +8 R.Att kicks in due to the double-dark weather. At 70+ with all the Accuracy Bonuses RNG gets through Traits the -8 R.Acc has never ever bothered me, and I use an all-STR/R.Att setup anyway. It's a really good - if potentially situational - neck armour for the class.

First off Awesome guide.
I leveled RNG to 60 for CoP along time ago and as I was thinking of coming back to it, I thought i'd do a bit of light reading to peak my interest again.

I noticed;
Quote:
Spartan Bullets: Level 30-???. Using these for a stun effect is sort of odd. Gun has such a high delay, and stun is usually required immediately. So I’m not sure if they find any use.

I'd like to add that these are amazing for BCNM / Mission (/ HNM / God ?) type fights. The Added effect of Stun proc'd quite often during my time a RNG for CoP and saved our Tank/Mages *** on more then 1 occasion. Used as a 'TP' bullet then switch in a Stronger one for Barrage/Slugshot.

Not sure about HNM/God's and what not, as RNG only being 60 it wasn't really fitting to take into Sky just yet :p

Might be worth testing for all those bored 75 Gun Rangers?

(p.s. I know this topic hasn't been updated since 2006, but people reading this thread might like some extra information ^^)

Great guide first off^^ I just popped RNG, leveled it to 10 and am looking forward to leveling it even higher. Your guide offers a lot of helpfull infor for me as a noob to the world of RNG. I do want to ask if anyone has a helpfull link or post that they could direct me to as far as soloing this job? I have heard of leveling off of worms and have done some soloing on them as BLM so the idea is not new to me. But I was just wondering if maybe someone had set up a nice post or list to make it easier^^ Thanks again!

i do got an suggestion under waist armor, i see you have scout's belt listed, but also might want to add buccaneer's belt under waist gear, not as good as scout's belt but it does add +7 rng acc and some str or is it agi which is jsut as good and alittle bit easier to obtain imo since its purchased from doing einherjar

Wow, they took some of my lines word for word and didn't even give any credit (unless it was on another page). That seems like plagarism to me. Anyone here have a Wiki account? I don't have one, and don't feel like making one to report this to them.

Good catch with Deadeye and Jalzhan's, can't believe I forgot the ToAU ring. However, Tracker's is meh, as the latent effect is Red Health (or a hit that will put you into the red). We aren't meant to be absorbing the brunt of the damage anyhow. Ladybug's is so-so.

The Enkidu set has some value for RNG, in particular the legs.

I'd add Enkidu's subligar to the list as a legs piece. Compared to Pahluwan, it has 1 more strength, +5 Store TP, +5 subtle blow (does this affect ranged attacks? Wiki says it affects TP from magic damage so I assume it also affects TP from Ranged attacks) but lacks the +4 RAcc.

Enkidu's leggings are also viable with +3 AGI, +4 RAtt and +2 Subtle blow although they pale next to things like Scout's socks.

Yes, STR, AGI, RATT, RACC, STP all affect ranged attacks.
