RNG and SkyFollow

I'm still new to RNG. All I've really done with it is Nyzul, help friends with NM's and some Sky farming. I haven't really fought any Sky gods or anything big yet. My only other jobs are BST and RDM, so I always came as a mage to sky except for farming, so I really don't know what to expect. =/

I haven't seen a RNG perform on any sky god yet, to be honest. The RNG we have in our sky LS just scouts for NM's while we farm. If we do gods, he'll throw the wind then go back and scout more NM's.

My question is, would I be better off going as RDM to sky and leaving a DD spot open for another job like SAM, DRK, etc. or could RNG really hold its own against these mobs? I'm really just looking for opinions from the experienced RNG's and your suggestions/ideas for sky. I'm just trying to save myself the embarrassment of tossing a lot of time/gil in to a job and end up doing little to no damage on something like Kirin or any of the others.

I'll add my gear so you all could know what I'll be working it.

I do plan to /WAR and I do have Vulcan's/Axe Grip. Should I change/upgrade anything? More STR maybe?

Thanks in advance!

RDM and RNG are uncomparable.

Bring RDM if your alliance need you as RDM,
bring RNG if your alliance need you as RNG.

And for DD, I personally prefer 2hander/THF for securing/ping-ponging the hate on tanks before you can squeeze more non /THF DD.

Rng DD is fine. In fact I wouldn't do a sky god run without a RNG. Shadowbind on Seiryu is so important.
On top of that being able to DD from out of AoE range has it's obvious advantages.

My old shell's tanks didn't bother with SA/TA WSs from /Thfs in the end. They managed to keep hate ok anyway and the DDs subbing jobs like /Sam meant more SCs and more MBs.

All I can say is just make sure you eat sushi. Sad as it is.

Basically, each shell is going to run gods in a different manner. Bring whatever is appropriate for your shell.

This is a perfect example of different approaches. Our LS uses at least one RNG on most god runs for a Wind, but on Seriyu, we just have a PLD tank him through Hundred Fists with Rampart. Well geared with enough shield skill, Hundred Fists is little of little concern.

I do most of the scouting for our LS as RNG, but I've never done scouting in the middle of a God run. We usually farm one night, do Gods on another.

I cry everytime I see a RNG do this. But that's because I know we have to eat the damned stuff to have respectable accuracy on the Gods. Damned level correction factor.

So much effort, so much money, and in the end you sit in a damp basement and WS for three hours.

That people even have to ask whether ranger is good in sky shows the devastating long-term effect that damn nerf had.

I like coming as thief to sky gods because I can mug them. However, if I have plenty of gil (rare event), I do enjoy bringing my ranger along. The DD power is there and you can always Shadowbind if things are not going well. Also, as other people mentioned, you can toss the appropriate wind at the god. A ranger's skill at throwing is not as high as a ninja's but it is enough. Besides, you can always use velocity shot, sharpshot, and unlimited shot with it.

Bottom line, ranger remains a very useful sky job.

As for your gear, if you want to load up on strength gear, get a PPA for WS. The ranged accuracy +40 gives you room to do things like forego your behemoth rings for something like raja's and some other ring with strength on it. Or, you can trade your dusk trousers in for pahluwan legs or if you can get it hachiryu haidate (str+10!). I know PPA is hard to get and easy to lose but it is well worth it.

Oh yeah, do not worry about "doing little to no damage." Last time I fought Kirin as ranger, I decided to launch an Empyreal Arrow at it right after a sam did self-frag. Well, the resulting WS damage + Light damage got me solid hate. Thank God for Skadi boots, I kited Kirin around and our tank enjoyed a little break. xD

Meh, ever tried nuking gods on BLM? Never enough magic accuracy/elemental skill/INT to be had.

last time my ls did a kited kirin, i got hate and pretty much straight tank kirin for roughly 3 min with 3-4 mages curing bombing me and with me having -12 enmity in gear. was fun lol

I use sushi in sky with /war sub. with double minuet and berzerk, I can break 1k sidewinders pretty easily except on genbu. Highest sidewinder i got off is 1.5k on suzy with angon/flashy/2x minuet/zerk (thats when i didnt have an aqua gorget and was using a demon arrow >.<)

I never do sky anymore, but I still know the old widescan loop like the back of my hand:

A) Genbu 2nd Ve'Lugannon entrance for Zip
B) Genbu entrance to Ru'Av
C) WS for Faust
D) Zone up to U-Room, WS across the map for MG (in old days for U too)
E) Zone out through 1F Ru'Av and maybe you get lucky with Despot

Run that loop every hour or so, kill gods otherwise. RNG's utility for sky is high; damage-wise it is good, but nothing that a good SAM/WAR/etc can't replicate. VZX's comment is correct though.

this is why i always try to go on my warrior when i would go up to sky, but when it does come to the nights we would fight gods it i had fun usually always in the alliance for shadowbind and the fact you dont have to chase the mob. just stick and move and watch your hate rng rocks on kirin(non zerg) cause you dont really need to worry bout missing DoT due to movement. not to mention feeling somewhat usefull on pullin mini's to the main alli while kite pt take kirin.

Ranger will always be needed in sky period. It's been that way since the original strategies were established.

I bring 2 jobs to sky; ranger and thief. Thief comes only if there aren't any others there (which is rare). When I go on thief, I am so bored. All I am expected to do is travel with the herd of people. But, on Ranger, I get to run all over the place.

Those long sky runs become significantly more involved and less boring when you can run around doing different things (as long as you aren't asked to sit there for 2 hours waiting for zip to spawn...).
