how does the 6 more base damage on the virtus vs the obow's 18 range attack?
The simple answer to this is "Xbow is dead".
The harder answer is "Depends on what and how you are fighting". IF RATT is capped the dmg Xbow will be better. If you are zerging the TP gain on the Obow might make it better. If you are just ranged DoTing or using a holy bolt setup, the lesser delay on Virtus might make it pull ahead.

What killed xbows is that MaB and Light Ele+ Atmas do sweet @#%^ all to holy bolt damage.
If atmas affected holy bolt damage, then you could shoot a repeating XBow with like 40dmg shots and 300dmg hate-free add effects with 3k damage trueflights. That could actually make RNG a force to be reckoned with again (Doing 400 dmg/hit at dagger speed with sweet FA hate and cracking out 3k WS without a hit to TP phase DoT would be awesome - about as awesome as rng needs to be to keep up with ever single other DD.)

Yes if you could get a 300 added effect to holies (hell I'd take 200) and use machine XBow, that would have been a nice addition to the armamentarium. But alas, SE in their wisdom has deemed Xbows and RNG's in general, the expendable crew members of FFXI.

Oh and it doesn't work if any THF or /THF has touched it. That ability changed everything.
So here's a question: would it break the game if all ranged WS gave no enmity?
MNK and WHM right now are totally broken and the game gets on fine. If RNG could WS freely and not get a hate spike could it be any worse than what those two jobs can pull off currently? I'm worried that even then, RNG would be ignored for it's lack of proc's. If they put hot shot/flaming arrow on the red proc list, maybe that would help too.

Making Camoflage work like Super Jump would be a good start. Drg gets 3min 100% hate shed ability, I see no reason why rng shouldn't, when enmity is a much bigger concern for rng than it is for drg.

I fully endorse this suggestion. This would make camo useful (I hardly ever use it).
Either that or just give us Enmity Douse.
