Coming back to ffxi and some questions aout leveling rng.Follow

This is my first time coming back to ffxi since the release of Blu and pup jobs (I think around 2007). Obviously things have changed and when I left I had mnk and thf leveled to 75. I'm aware though that the cap has been raised.

My question is since I'm taking rng up as my first job back, what is the general route of leveling it? Compared to my other jobs doing FoV solo is quite different I imagine (to thf and mnk). Is this game still party-centric? If so, from what level to what level?
How are the party dynamics as rng? Do they still "pull?" I see the ranger 101 faq at the top and I'll be using that for equipment advice.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Abyssea killed RNG, sorry. Do you like WAR, NIN, MNK, WHM, BLM, or BLU?

Leveling & meriting is just the appetizer now. You eat them quick and find no point doing it once you hit lvl cap.

For leveling, people usually solo until 20 ish, join GoV party/alliance until 75, or leech abyssea from 30 (kinda bad for yourself on longterm because your combat /magic skill level will be way below the cap) and join Abyssea exp alliance from 75 to 95.

The game is still party-centric. Although now you can achieve more with less number of people, making full-party/alliance-like activity less popular.
Pulling, when it deemed necessary, is the job of anyone that can pull , not just RNG.

Appreciate the replies!

To be honest, I was aware that rng was more of a "toy" job as of late by reading different message boards, but still wanted to level it. I guess I'll have to get familiar with the "new" content first obviously and go from there.

I suggest getting familiar with Abyssea with one of the aforementioned jobs, as they will get you in good with an Abyssea group. Maybe not BLU so much, I just said that because it can do some yellow proccing, but it's the first job to be left out if numbers are low. As for the rest of the changes, there are over 9000 'what's new' threads waiting for ya.

Definitely would not level RNG as a first job. I'd strongly advise an Abyssea friendly job that will get you into an Abyssea linkshell or group. Most of the good gear for any job (AF3, Empyrean weapons) is going to come from Abyssea. Voidwatch has some good items too, but you'll likely want your character fleshed out from Abyssea first before moving to Voidwatch.

WAR, WHM, NIN, THF, BLM. With that group you can proc all red, most yellow and get TH for empy drops. I'd add in MNK, BLU, BRD as other decent Aby jobs. RNG is just sad in Aby. I can gear up my WHM for DD and outdamage my RNG.

RR/GH/Apoc has made 1H godly in Abyssea and there was no comparable Atma for ranged attackers. In fact, its better to enter Aby as a magic based ranged attacker with a good true flight build and Ultimate/GH/Beyond atmas.

Fortunately RNG seems to be useful in Voidwatch so its not a completely dead job. Its just going to be a while before someone starting from scratch gets that opportunity. Given it takes a week of casual levelling to get from 1-95 these days, I'd suggest levelling an Aby friendly job first, use it to get gear for RNG and then level RNG at that point to do VWNM's.

Again, I really appreciate the detailed responses. I was thinking along those lines that I'll have to level a job to get items for Ranger. Didn't have any real idea it'd only take a week to reach 95 though, but I guess the skill level will have to be brought up separately.

I was actually thinking of returning as well, and im probably about the same as this guy when i finally quit was around the time of ToAU expansion and i managed to level a blue mage to 60 back then but was held up by {Sea} missions. I remember it beeing forever to level anything back then. How could raising the level cap actually of lowered the time it took to level characters? im confused by this.
MNK75, WAR40, THF37, NIN59, WHM38, BLM18, BLU60
WAR 75, NIN 42, RNG65

Why did XPing speed up?
-In abyssea, there is no Alliance penalty to XP so you can have a party of 18 going.

-A capped XP chain will cap xp at 600 XP per kill, and will not time out if you have a slow kill.

-Mobs frequently drop treasure chests filled with:

--Potions to give you boosts to your MAB, MAcc, Attack, Accuracy, Haste, Crit Hit Rate, HP, MP, and an Erase drink.

--All JA including 2hr restore, 300TP, and full HP/MP recover.

--Straight up 1.25k XP

-Some camps have quests that will give you up to 3k XP per 5 mobs killed. This technically also kind of hurts XP because you spend a minute in menus every 5 kills, but whatever.

-Inside Abyssea, you have superpowers and can solo rape a mob in 10-40 seconds.

-Mages also have superpowers, being the ability to either have unlimited MP to cure with, or unlimited MP to nuke with.

-Good BLMs can one-shot mobs. Or, AoE 2shot groups.

-I may have forgotten other reasons.
