A BST Equipment GuideFollow

Well, at the risk of annoying people that have been waiting altogether too long for me to update my leveling locations guide, I decided to create a Beastmaster equipment guide. There's never really been a complete one here, and it's something that a lot of people like to have to reference.

First off, let me give a disclaimer. This is my guide. I make no guarantees that the items I list are actually the best for any given level, they're just what I think is good. Some people may take issue with my choices, and I may have forgotten some items. Feel free to make your own suggestions, if I made a mistake, I'll be sure to edit the items in. However, sometimes it's not a mistake, and I'll leave it out. For example, I don't like Bison gear at all. I think AF is better for charming, and Thick is better for fighting, so I see no reason to own Bison gear. Personally, I wear the Bison pants because I love how they look, it has very little to do with the stats.

Specifically, take my scythe choices with a grain of salt. I know some BST like to use scythe, but I've personally never seen a reason to, and I've never swung a scythe in my whole time playing. Yes, my scythe skill is 0 as BST73, and I intend it to leave it that way forever. I based my scythe selections on damage/delay ratio, which should be fine, but I just wanted to warn you in advance that I don't have any personal experience with any of these scythes.

Now, in regards to the actual guide's formatting, I decided to lay it out the way I do for myself every time I start a new job. Whenever I decide to play a job, I write down the numbers 1-75 in the margin of some paper, bring up the equipment list on somepage, then go through and write down gear I think I should have when I reach a given level. This is easier to reference in my opinion than lists separated by gear slot. If a lot of people request it, I could split it up by slot as well, but the way it is now is the way I personally prefer.

The guide is going to require a little work by the reader as well. I can't give a truly "best" path through gear, so you're going to have to look at items and decide for yourself whether you consider them an improvement over what you're already wearing. For example, I list "RSE Gloves" at 27, then "Royal Squire's Mufflers" at 30. If you think your RSE is better than Ryl.Sqr.Mufflers, feel free to keep wearing it. BST is a solo job most of the time, so you can really wear whatever you want. Just remember that you're going to have a lot of close calls, so it's usually in your best interests to be wearing as good of gear as you can. On that topic, I only list HQ versions of items in my guide if I think they're considerably better than the NQ for their price. If you can afford the HQ of any item I list and think the added stats are worth the price, definitely go for the HQ.

One final thing to mention before we get to the actual guide is a legend of sorts.

Underlined items are things that I consider essential. You can certainly level without them, I'm sure nobody will call you a "gimp", but I highly recommend you buy them. They'll make your BST experience a lot easier.

On the opposite end, italicized items are luxury items, things that are nice to have, but are difficult to get for some reason or another. It could be sheer cost (for something like Haubergeon), difficult R/EX drops (earrings from Automaton Assault ENM), or requiring missions to have been completed (Gaudy Harness). Most of the items marked in italics will be very good, but you have to decide for yourself whether it's worth the time or gil investment to pick them up. Note that I somewhat scaled the "luxury ranking" according to level. For example, a Nomad's Mantle gets marked as luxury because it would be an expensive piece of gear for a level 24, but Thick gear isn't marked, even though each piece probably costs more than a Nomad's Mantle. By the time you're a BST68, 50k shouldn't be as much of a problem. As I mentioned above, I may list inferior items after luxury ones. I can't assume people are using the luxury items, so I have to keep listing alternatives. If what you're already wearing is better, keep wearing it.

Items listed in gold are items related to charming. A good BST will have sets of equipment for charming and for fighting, so these items should be macro'd in before charming, and can then be swapped out afterwards. Charming is the basis of playing as a BST, so get the best charm gear you can afford, failing a charm at a crucial time will get you killed a lot more than having slightly sub-par fighting equiment.

Finally, items in orange give sizeable MP boosts, so you can choose to use these instead of other gear if you think you need more MP. You should get a feel for how much MP you like, and you can adjust your gear accordingly.

Well, on with the guide! Please post feedback so I can fix any mistakes, I'm sure I've overlooked some things.

Missed Trainer's Wristbands, level 60 item. 14 DEF, +4 DEX and CHR.
More a possible item than a must-have I think, but they're dirt cheap. If I understand how things work, these would help with landing charm due to the CHR, versus AF gloves helping more with longer charms.

Also Patroclus's Helm is level 60, and is an awesome BST item if you can get it. http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=9456

There also don't seem to be any shields listed, or Lightning Bow/Rosenbogen/etc, just Tiphia Sting.

I wouldn't consider a Tungi to be a must-have. I have one, I used it until I got my Kabrakan's last week or so. It's a good axe, but given the other options around then, doesn't seem worth labelling must-have. A Kabrakan's is good, Wrath Tabar, Francisca...all around the same level range.

63 you could possibly use Coral earring(s) instead of Spike earrings. Jelly Ring is also a possible, though I'm not sure if I'm going to use mine.

75 I'd list other god gear perhaps. Though no other parts have CHR, they could be good for certain things. Byakko's Haidate is pretty standard if you can wear them. You also don't list Hetacomb gear, which is strong and can be counterbalanced with Haste% gear. The STR bonus is great if you're after that, and you could even just use in a WS macro.

Anyway, pretty good list I think, just some things I thought of.

Nice job! Hmm... What about Jaeger Mantle? Also, in my opinion, Voyager Sallet should be italicized. That's all the suggestions I have so far. This list is the best I've seen for Beastmasters so far, so I've definitely rated you up!

Thanks for putting this together. Personally, I like having the levels listed with all the gear. That way I know what to look for at the next level.

I just hit 17BST last night. Hurray! Now I can finally use my Monster Signa.

There also don't seem to be any shields listed

from 40 to 59 you'll use the same shield. Balance Buckler. not sure about you, but i don't want to give up that +3 acc heh.

Yep, I'm still using it actually. At the time I made the comment though, neither that or a Darksteel Buckler were listed.

Yeah, that was my mistake. I posted this, then realized about 30 seconds later that I had totally forgotten about shields. I had edited it with my shield choices about 10 minutes later, but if anyone had read it right after I posted, there would have been no shields.

And I actually still use Balance Buckler at 73, I'm obsessed with Accuracy gear. The only thing I think I would personally replace it with would be a Viking Shield, or Tatami Shield. I'm not quite rich enough to buy a Viking Shield, and haven't gotten around to getting the Tatami yet, so still sticking to my trusty Balance Buckler. Oh well, at least that's one piece of 40-cap gear I don't have to send from my mule all the time. :b

Also, gahoo, feel free to post this in the Wiki, that would be great.

A great guide. And a solid layout. Thank you for the work!

The next thing that I'd suggest would be for a few paragraphs under each level talking about the new gear that has become available, and the pros and cons of why you may want to use it. So you'd get something like this:

38: Survival Belt, Powder Boots

<section on the belt>

Powder Boots: <the boots stats>
The powder boots allow for a non-thief to get flee when one of the boots charges is used. If one is in a situation where there is a high chance of nasty links, such as hunting Goblin leech pets in Gustav Tunnel, having these on, and a macro ready to activate them, can save your life. One button press and you can zip to the zone line leaving that angry Gob Tamer in the dust! The bad side is that the number of charges is limited, and once used up, the boots, which are not cheep, are trash.

You could get feedback from all of us like the hunting grounds/Anthologies have, and it will slowly fill out to be a wonderful detailed resourse where we can learn about items that others may have experimented with and found positives (and negatives) that the rest of us have missed.

Awesome guide, big rate up. :)

For those low- to mid-level BST that are into +Acc gear, just thought I'd add that the price on the lvl 40 Tilt Belt has recently dropped like a rock on most servers. It comes from the same BCNM that now drops Peacock Charm, and the market is currently flooded. +5 Acc for 5k on my server, and you can use it until Life Belt at lvl 48. Great value.

One more thing - for the lvl 40 Corsette, I'd get the +1 if at all possible. More +CHR, and not so much -AGI if you fail a charm.

Then you can just macro the two belts into your charm/fight gear, and you're all set :).

Just thought I'd mention that Friar's Rope is also an excellent choice in belts at level 14. I know a lot of people go for the Warrior's +1, but I, personally, felt that the MP +5 was a godsend. Besides, those people who raised a mage job probably already did the quest in San'doria that gets you this item, so it's a good choice for people with lint in their wallets, too.

Otherwise, this guide is an amazing help. It's always nice to know what I should have at what level and be able to farm accordingly. Great job!

Yeah, this one is very outdated. I never used a "guide" for equipment, I'd just use somepages advanced equipment search but if you want a guide, the Wiki is a bit more up to date.

I seem to notice that the Combat Caster's Axe (level 40) and Combat Caster's Axe +1 (Level 43) are not listed as potential weapons. I wonder is there is something I am missing about the AF axe? I mean the DPS is higher on these axes and they have +Att and the +1 can have +DEX. If the +2 CHR of the AF axe makes that much difference I would be interested in knowing but I think I would rather have a higher chance of killing the mob quicker. Please let me know what you think about this choice.

Nice guide. However at level 20, I prefer using Trump crown. What's nice is I Can use it with most of my jobs and has a great MP, HP boost + char. I even replaced noble's ribbon. IT's variable boost that grows with levels so even better and can last lots of levels up to the 50's. Great for level capped areas too.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but I think the Banded Helm at level 46 is not for a Beastmaster, at least according to this --> http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/search.html?q=banded+helm . Am I correct on this?

At any rate, I really appreciate the time and effort put into this list. Thank you.
