Figured I'd get this started up as sort of a personal blog to document the ups and downs, ins and outs of my personal journey to obtain the uber BST Axe "Guttler".

Yes, I know this is going to take a whole lot of gil to accomplish + a whole lot of patience...which I have. I mean c'mon Lv. 83 fishing, that took me a while to get! As of right now, I've only got low end 6 figures in gil and it's not a whole lot.

I have cleaned house and have put up all sorts of stuff from other jobs I was leveling at the Auction House to sell. The only gear I am keeping is the gear for my Lv. 75 BST, Lv. 75 BLM, and Lv. 75 THF. THF for farming purposes, BLM is what I use when I do Dynamis, and BST for events, occasional exp/meriting, and fishing. Yes, I fish as BST ALWAYS, and I equip my Relic Axe to show people why I am fishing so much.

My main source of gil currently is from fishing. I go to Nashmau and use Lu Shang's and Shrimp Lure to catch Ahtapot and Mercanbaligi (ToAU versions of Grimmonite and Bastore Bream) and once I'm full or near full or just altogether bored from fishing so much, I sell all my catches to a nearby NPC. Mercs sell for 600 each, and Ahtapot for 700 gil each. It's not a whole lot, but it adds up! In one evening of fishing (about 3 hours straight) I can make anywhere between 120-140k just from selling fishes to NPC. Other times, I'll go to the Boyahda Tree with my BST and kill Goobs for Wisteria Lumber and Tree Cuttings, but that gets boring quickly, and the drop rate (at least for me) sucks. Or for fun, I'll go on my THF, put on my Assassin's Culotte (enhanced Gilfinder) and go on a Beastman killing spree in one of the Beastman strongholds for fun and a little profit.

So far, I have purchased just 10 Tukuku Whiteshells towards the first upgrade. I have been picky when cruising the AFK bazaar areas, though. I've seen T. Whiteshells selling for 10k each in some AFK bazaars, but the ones I found were being sold for 8.5k and I snapped them right up. I'm always looking for deals on currency, and I know people in several endgame/dynamis shells that I am currently trying to work some deals on for purchasing currency. Hopefully I can get a nice lil' deal going where I can get as much currency as I can at a reduced price once I have a nice chunk of change in pocket.

Once some more of my stuff sells, and I'm able to get a deal set up with a Dynamis LS for deals on reduced rates of currency, I'll be buying up a whole bunch more. But for right now, the status of my upgrade looks like this.

Upgrade #1 - 10/300 T. Whiteshells
Upgrade #2 - 0/1400 O. Bronzepieces
Upgrade #3 - 0/6100 1 Byne Bills
Upgrade #4 - 0/10000 T. Whiteshells

As of right now, I'm still debating whether to farm until I can purchase a 100cc bill, or keep buying up 1cc bills. Since I've already purchased 10 1cc bills, I'll buy 90 more and get that first 100cc bill that way, then on the next one farm until I can buy a 100cc straight up and see which option is faster.

Good luck bro! I started working on mine well over a year ago. I got Leonine Axe pretty easily. Back then, it cost me 7million gil. I got almost to the stage 2 finale with 12/14 M. Silverpieces when I got tired out..... I sold all my currency, which allowed me to upgrade some of my gear, and pimp out my DRK. Today, I have a 7million gil axe that's useless for the most part. Sits squarely on my Mannequin. I have another friend starting Relic Polearm, and I feel I would be remiss if I didn't give you the same advice I gave her, which is the same advice Sing gave you:

Wait til you have enough to get the 3rd stage before you upgrade. If you got hacked that would suck, but face it, the odds are pretty slim if you are smart. On the other hand, if you get through Stage 2 and change your mind, that would be a LOT of gil wasted.

I was advised of this by a friend before I started, and being fresh and pumped, I ignored it. Now, I would kill for that 7mil back! :)

Nope, ain't stoppin' for nuttin!

Here's my inspiration.....Lhu Marrechech (sp?) She is an NPC Mithra BST in Windurst Waters [S] in full BST relic armor, Tariqah shield, and a GUTTLER. Sometimes I'll AFK standing next to her wearing all of my BST relic armor (4/5 BTW need those damn boots) and my gimpy Woodville's Axe and gimpy Leopard axe.

Then when I see her despawn I'll run out to West Sarutabaruta [S] since I know she's in a Campaign Battle somewhere just so I can fight alongside her, her Guttler, and her 2 Greater Bird pets.

Trust me, if I were a Tarutaru, I would /hump her mercilessly! LOL

By the way, I'm not the only LoTB member upgrading a Guttler. Lomont from LoTB is also upgrading a Guttler, so eventually there will be 2 BSTs from the same BST LS sporting Guttlers. That'll be a sight to see!

Ok, good luck with your quest but there are a couple of things that I think you need to do. First of all, level your cooking. This will take time, now but in the long run it means you will be ahead on gil because you can cook the fish and that adds profit to the fish you are catching.

Second of all, you are not in the optimum spot for the fish you are catching. You need to zone into the nearby talacca cove and fish there instead. With lushang and shrimp lure you will catch, mecs, ahtapot and dil. This is crucial because dil=black sole. Dil will provide you with possible skill ups, and you will catch the same fish faaster if you are a higher level. I am level 93 fishing and I can assure you that you will catch more dil at 93 than at 83. If you have cooking fully leveled of course you can make sushi from the mercs and dil. In other words, get the heck out of nashmau! I have cooking 99+3 and 93 fishing so im speaking from experience, not speculation on this topic.

I have the Leonine axe and 8 silverpieces but my upgrade plans are kind of on hold. My main reluctance to go farther is that Gutler just does not seem to be really all that overpowering considering what it costs in terms of time. The same can be said for several other relic weapons as well.

SE needs to boost Gutler and several other relic weapons, they have really suffered from the upward creep in power of other weapons. SE also kind of hinted that there was much more to the nyzul isle weapons than is presently known. I plan to wait and see how that shakes out before i spend anymore time on Guttler.

One way of looking at guttler is as the bst equivalent for seeking the holy grail. You may never complete the quest but it is an epic undertaking. So good luck with your quest and no regrets if you dont finish it!

Also don't forget you need attestation and fragment to complete the upgrade. Technically you can't really complete Guttler without getting help from a well established dynamis linkshell. Attestation drop rate is completely random and the fragment NM is definitely not an easy mob to deal with.

Best advise is to start your own dynamis LS or find a good one that allows you to sponsor runs. Also it's probably a good idea to wait for SE to release the new Nyzule Isle relic weapon. Double Axe sounds promising.

I am currently taking Goldmisthing to 100+3 on my Main and Clothcraft also to 100+3 on my secondary character. ONce those 2 goals are achieved I guess I will start on my trip to acquire Guttler, too. Keep us updated, thanks for the inspiration!

I applaud your ambition to upgrade and I second pretty much all of the advice that has been given so far. I doubt there's many people that haven't wanted to upgrade a relic at some point. That being said, I've always maintained that given enough time and determination anything is possible. Of course it may just go beyond reason at some point, lol.

However, for me, I have a hard time giving up about 95% of the content of FFXI for a year (or however long it takes) just to get one single item. Personally, I plan on finishing my Clothcraft on my alternate account (92 atm) and Alchemy and Bonecraft on my other mules to help pay the bills. Crafting seems to make sense for how I want to play, meaning less time farming and more time doing events, etc. Of course, I still have a lot of other gear I would like to obtain before then as well.

One point I really want to emphasize is: take the time to get into a "good" dynamis ls, if you're not already in one. I know it took me a long time (3+ years) to finally get into one that is capable of actually completing a relic weapon (finished relic dagger 2 months ago for our first fully unlocked relic in the ls).

There's nothing like a well established dynamis ls that knows its business. It's like a breath of fresh air after being in so many dynalses where the leaders are constantly screaming in Caps and swearing at members. Or where noob players run into stats causing constant wipes.

It doesn't have to be a big ls either (ie., 50+ people). The ls I'm currently in clears most dynamis areas with only 20 or so people. We defeated the animated weapon and attestation mob with only around 30 or so people.

One thing I found interesting. The relic holder in my ls made a comment the other day that he thought obtaining maat's cap was more impressive or difficult than a relic weapon. Its surprising how costly exping other jobs can be, not only in terms of gil but also time. Of course he was able to make his gil off of ancient beastcoins back when they would sell for 500k per coin. So maybe his view on things is a little skewed.

Awesome, I think that's pretty much the first step required. Honestly, sponsoring runs is nice and all but it can be a bit of a gamble especially with some less impressive dynamis lses. With a good ls, though, you should be able to make money or come close, just by counting up the singles, with 100s being a very nice bonus.

What does your Dynamis ls currently do with the currency? Is it possible to buy currency from them at a slightly reduced price?

I would think that dynamis lses would be more willing to sell to their own members, in that way money stays in the ls and everyone can benefit from it.

My cooking is currenty Lv. 35, which is the Meatball cap. I MIGHT take up cooking once my fishing reaches Lv. 100 or I obtain my Ebisu Fishing Rod (whichever occurrs first) Another possibility is to hook up with a Lv. 100 cook in my LS and provide her the materials and have her synth them up for me with the fish I catch and sell at Auction. Would be a nice lil' deal and of course I'd skim a lil' bit off the top to repay her for her services.

I'll be starting me a guttler over on Quetzy just as soon as I'm not perma-broke. (Unfortunately, that means getting COR to 75 to cap out merits for BST before abandoning the job first, though.)

What I wouldn't give to see a LoTB or TheFlock party where everyone has a guttler.

If you know the price of individual currency, FFXIAH has a calculator for that.

Not a very productive night last night.....except for one thing (literally)

First off, went out to Castle O last night and mass killed Meat Maggots trying to get White Rocks to drop.....even with TH3 after about an hour and a half of mass murdering the crawlers, I only had 2 White Rocks to drop. :(

So with just those two White Rocks, and 2 Wind Crystals, I hand them off to a Lv. 100 Goldsmithing friend of mine who I had struck a deal with. 30k to him for each successful Synthesis of an Angelstone, but apparently the HQ3 rate for that synth is REALLY LOW despite the fact it's a Lv. 20 Synthesis recepie. Damned if he didn't HQ3 the very first synth! W00T! 30k to him, and I put the Angelstone up for sale for 115k!

Then I get a /tell from a LS mate letting me know they are mass killing Gigas in Upper Delkfutt Tower for Pallas and Alky pop items so I head on up there. They already had several NM pop items, so as soon as I arrived, we started mass killing Pallas and Alky.....sadly....we go 0/5 on Alky and 0/7 on Pallas, not a single drop....but they like to leave their stinky socks behind for some strange reason. (yuck!)

No Ancient Currency purchased last night, and most likely since LoTB is gonna take a stab at sky farming tonight, might not get any tonight. /sigh

BTW Kyahahaha we'd love to have ya with us on Shiva, that would make 3 upgrading Guttlers in LoTB....that is, of course, assuming you joined the LS.

Approximate prices of Ancient Currency on Shiva currently from what I have seen.

Bastok Currency - 1 Byne Bills (6000g - 7500g) 100 Byne Bills (600k - 750k)
San d'Oria Currency - O. Bronzepiece (10,000g) M. Silverpiece (1M)
Windurst Currency - T. Whiteshells (8.5k-10k) L.N. Jadeshells (850k-1M)

However, I have seen some people price gouging on some of the currency, mainly on Whiteshells, some trying to sell a stack at 12k each, and another stack for 13k in the same bazaar.

remember you get 3000 back when you do the final trade, so you can always borrow that last for your LS or somebody else doing the upgrade (in your example that would be your fellow upgrading bst.)

SE said that zilart relic weapons are supposed to be the best. They are even going to increase the relic weapons, so the new nyzul weapons won't be as powerful.

Events of 1/10

I came across some more stuff that I had in my Mog Safe that I could sell, some of the stuff is 6 figures type stuff like the Lv. 50 SAM JSE Haidate with Store TP +6, Lightning Bow +1. Also now that I have a Rajas Ring, I could liquidate some of my rings like the Garrulous Ring and Spinel Ring that I have had for sooooooo long. Sent all of those to my Jeuno sales mule and awaiting those to sell.

ALSO, we did some ODS runs back on Sunday before I started this lil' blog o' mine, and out of 5 successful runs (one was a stupid senseless wipe) we got TWO Serket Rings, one of which was on my orb, and it finally sold yesterday! Sadly, it wasn't YOYD, so out I go giving everyone at the run 103k. :(

But something EVEN COOLER.....LoTB is back up in sky! Yes, after nearly all of the leadership had moved on to Quetzy (including me, but I came back) which pretty much decimated the shell and severely hurt LS morale.....we're back up in sky. Apparently Thursday night is a REALLY good night to be in sky on Shiva....there was NO ONE there except for us! After about an hour of mass killing dolls 3 at a time with 7 BST, 2 SMN, and a BLM, we got Despot and got Gem of the West. W00T! However, we were unsuccessful in getting a Diorite to drop so we don't have a Byakko pop set...yet....we're going to try again on Tuesday and hopefully we can make Tuesday/Thursday sky runs a regular thing for us.

BTW, haven't bought any new ancient currency yet. I did cruise the AFK bazaars, but didn't find any T. Whiteshells on sale. So no change in that department.

Hmm....3 Kraken Clubs from BCNM 60 "Up in Arms" ought to just about get the job done. lmao

AND

When I run out of seals, I've got a plan to farm more seals by soloing some jobs killing Goblin's/Gigas's pets. They drop Beastmen's Seals (and Kindred's Seals at higher levels) like candy.

Some jobs I'm considering going solo on pets....PUP (currently Lv. 44), SCH (Lv. 1), RNG (Lv. 22 and using boomerang onry! Bolts/arrows = gil sink), BLU (Lv. 53) and DRG (Lv. 22)

ALL of the Beastmen's Seals I have currently stored in my Mog Safe (3 full stacks + 30) were nearly all from when I solo'd BLM from Lv. 19 to Lv. 66, so it can be done.

The only things I'd have to spend money on (other than gear) are for Reraise items (soloing usually comes with some deaths along the way) Shihei for when I sub /NIN and some sort of pulling tools like NIN elemental magics when /NIN or Ranged Attack weapons like boomerangs.

Speaking of which, I totally forgot about the ISNM 60 and 75 fights. Guess I'll need to research those and find out which can be done all BST (other than Making a Mockery of course)

No major update here, mainly because I haven't seen any T. Whiteshells on sale in any bazaars over the weekend. Are the Dynamis LSes on Shiva avoiding Dynamis-Windurst? WTF? /sigh

Anyway!

Dynamis-Beaucedine last night. I went as THF/NIN, managed to steal 2 T. Whiteshells off Yagudos, and 1 O. Bronzepiece off an Orc. Nothing better than FREE ancient currency!

Also, I'm pretty close to obtaining another L. Jadeshell, but when I cruised the AFK Bazaar area, there were none for sale, however, I did buy another T. Whiteshell off one of the Dynamis LS members for 8k. It's not much but every little bit helps. I'm quickly realizing that obtaining this axe is going to really be a test of patience.

So overall....stole 2 T. Whiteshells, purchased a 3rd T. Whiteshell for 8k, and stole an O. Bronzepiece off an Orc, so not a total waste of a day. ^^
