Hello Folks,

I have recently re-purchased the game (seekers collection) and just created a Taru on Bahamut server (Brayden) named after my son). Long ago, I had a Taru by the name of Pjstock on the very same server, and in recent years made a return to the game on a new account (2009) before halting play in the same year. Much has changed within my personal life, and amidst new found responsibilities (new father), I am yet again returning and starting on a brand new account... I have already started a different thread in general that was aimed at general questions regarding the game, however, I have Beastmaster specific questions I'd like to ask and thought this thread would be more direct and in the appropriate forum for such questions. So here goes;

1) Somewhat a general one... I am going to focus on Beastmaster solely, however, I need a subjob to level, as well as an initial job with which to level in order to access Beastmaster to begin with. Out of the starting jobs, which would be the most effective solo to obtain level 30 and unlock Beastmaster (and Dancer)?

2) I have heard /DNC sub is more or less the way to go. Would this sub job be sufficient for all around solo gameplay as a Beastmaster? It looks good on paper to me, and I am considering unlocking it along side Beastmaster and going from there en route to 99...

3) I have read there has been improvements with jug pets since I last played. Back in the day, I solely solo leveled using charm and hardly ever touched jug pets (save for courier carrie sometimes). Has the tactics at which the Beastmaster solo's to cap changed? Are old camping grounds still viable? Are jug pets strong enough to level with now? If so, which ones would be good to get for the leveling process?

Additional information; I started in Windhurst (if that may impact the route on which to level at all).

Thanks for taking the time to read my questions!

It doesn't seem to me like there's really been many BST specific changes, just other stuff changing in the game around us. My thoughts:

0. I recommend reading the Returning to Vana'diel guide on BGWiki. It's a good overview of how various things stand.

1. Probably WHM or RDM. Non-consumable stealth makes life easier, and there will probably be times where you'll still want those jobs anyway.

2. /DNC is very nice. Although with the Trust system, it's not as critical to have healing from your subjob.

3. <76 jug pets haven't really changed, other than the Sic/Ready change. Synergy has made some of the better ones easier to get though. 76+ jug pets are stronger, though EM+ mobs will usually still give them a beating. But with FoV/GoV/RoE, fighting a bunch of EPs is way better than old style soloing as far as return over time goes. Jug pets are a lot more viable for that kind of thing. A tank-type Trust just makes it a bit better on top of that, since then you can pretty much go all-out on damage with both pet and master, and not worry about using up jugs so quickly.

As for which jugs to use, almost anything is better than crab. Rabbit and HQ rabbit are both decent, and you can synergize the HQ with trivial skill. (The NQ you can get from a NPC.) Funguar is pretty solid. Tiger and HQ tiger might be the best for their ranges if you've got something else to tank, but those will take some more effort on crafting to make. 66-75 are kind of slim pickings unfortunately. HQ Antlion and Diremite are both good, but both take a good amount of cooking skill to make, and you probably won't find them for sale very often.
