I think it's only going to be a matter of time before everybody, one way or another, gets a ticket for speeding through one of those intersections."

Now, it could just be me...but you'd think that not speeding would eliminate the chance of getting a speeding ticket from the cameras.

Then again, I live in a city where the mentality seems to be that the speed limit is at least 10mph higher than posted. On the street where I live, if I dare go only 5mph over the speed limit, people fly by me at 10-15 mph more than I'm going, assuming the people behind me don't start flashing their lights and honking at me. So slow down when going into an intersection and speed the rest of the time. Got it, that was easy.

Do they still treat red lights as if they are optional there? (I haven't been to cruces since like 2002)

You should just hit the brakes next time. Not only can you get some semi-free body work out of it you can get some entertainment watching the drivers behind you explain to the cops how they ran into each other going 15 over the limit.

Not only that, but if I did, with my luck I'd end up hurting my back and needing physical therapy or something.

Punishment will have to wait til I can finally get my hands on some kind of focused EMP device.

My facebook inbox was getting constant requests several months ago from friends to protest the installation of red light cameras in Buffalo.

I'm still completely unsure what their reasoning was behind it other than "IT FEELS LIKE WE'RE BEING WATCHED OMG1984BIGBROTHER."

It gives cities incentive to lower yellow light times below safe, mandated times. It's certainly not unheard of.
