I think it would be nice if there was a toggle for the karma system, where you could just toggle off the ability to see the ratings of posts. Even if it was just for your own posts or something. It's just a pet peeve of mine when I post something that's simply expressing an opinion and it will immediately get rated down, without even getting a response in the thread. Yes, I understand that karma doesn't mean all that much, but I just think it would be so much nicer if I had the option to not even know what my rating was. Just a thought, it's very possible I'm the only one who feels this way.

Wow, I had just said something about this in another thread this morning. The jist of it was that it's fun to watch people self destruct over their imaginary internet points.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: The karma system is there as a method to A. control spammers by allowing the community to dispense with them when an admin is not around somewhat, and B. for members of the community to provide feedback to you. If your rating is constantly dropping, you may be doing something annoying and people should have the option to express that annoyance even if they aren't willing to take the agressive route and post about it. Also if you are doing something that people particularily like, they should be able to encourage it so you will do whatever it was more often. Hideing that feedback from people would encourage people to ignore that community feedback entirely, which is when I start getting complaints and then people get banned. So no, we will not be implementing a hide Karma feature at this time.

A rating is basically a response. At your current postcount, while not unmovable, your karma will take serious pushing to really move. As such, you can safely interpret each post's rating as a comment on the post itself without worrying that it'll hurt you overall.

When you get a rate down, look at what you posted. Was the tone antagonistic or at least interpretable that way, which I saw as an issue in a couple of your rated down posts in the last couple months? That'll often get you hit. Was there a reason for the rate? If you can't find any reason for it and are happy with the post, you have to learn to ignore them. Unless you see a pattern of ratedowns where you can find no reason for it, you have to learn to live with them.

Unless you're willing to bribe Kao to camp your karma to perma guru. I hear he's charging $10,000 and a live baby wombat for that service.

I can pay $1 and a lot of cat hair woven into a wombat shape. Is that enough, Kao?
