Here's another oldie fanfic I wrote. This one was supposed to have been a co-op between myself and Rampart. "Supposed to". If you all know or see Rampart, please remind him that he is about four months overdue on his next part. =)

But, I hope that this one really grabs an interest. I suppose if he is unable to write, I could always finish it off. What do you think of part one?

P.S. - I made up the setting to allow for a grander scope of imagination.

A VOICE FROM THE PAST

Dreams. Unconscious desires? Cryptic messages from the past or possibly the future? Perhaps dreams are truly nothing more than random reflections living beings have about their world. Some species such as trees...do they dream? Contained in their leafy boughs, perhaps, lay memories. Consciousness? Other beings, in this case and more specifically Rampart, dreams where undoubtedly interwoven into every fiber of his being.

Since his childhood growing up in San d'Oria, Cotesirau had always been fascinated with the Royal Knights. His family had ties to the military and he used them to learn about all he would need to know for his assured-place in the King's Army. As he grew into a young man, Cotesirau studied the ways of a warrior.

One evening he was watching a sparring match in East Ronfaure. His inspiration was a great warrior named Nushoffiet. After subduing his opponent he called for another. The circle surrounding him buzzed but produced no warriors. From the back an elder voice shouted, "I challenge you then, Nushoffiet."

"Show yourself and fight like a true knight!" For a moment there was silence. "Face me, cowardly challenger!"

"Very well," came a reply. The champion warrior was pinned under the tip of the challenger's lance before he knew what hit him. From that point, Cotesirau was enthralled with this new champion.

He pulled himself from the Royal Knights and spent years in the forest learning under this new master. When he was ready, Cotesirau was led to a secret location to obtain his final piece of training: his wyvern.

"What will you call him, boy?"

"Raiden, a name I was called when I was younger."

"Oh? You no longer fit that monacer, boy. You have grown strong and tall. You know how to stand your ground as well as attack from above it. You named your protoge 'Raiden', I shall name you 'Rampart' as a reflection of your fighting spirit."

"Thank you. I shall honor my name and use it as my own from this day, my..." Cotesirau (now Rampart) started, but stopped short. His mentor was missing. Everything was now black and he felt as if he was falling. He screamed as he fell, "Master...!"

"...Westig!" Rampart shot up in bed shouting. He looked around an oriented himself. With a palm wiping sleep from his face he said, "Again. Again with the same dream." Raiden looked over curiously at him and Rampart pet his crest. "Nothing you need worry about, boy." The small wyvern clicked with contentment. "C'mon, what do you say that you and I go looking for an old friend?"

Rampart had been dreaming more these days. About good and evil. About those he cared for and despised. He grew restless and even his wyvern seemed fatigued with concern for his master. But that was going to change. Rampart would find his master and make sense of these dreams, especially the unnervingly vivid ones about his own old master.

That day, Rampart packed a sachel and set out for the house of Yekan & Phyree, the white mage twins. If anyone knew anything about anyone, it'd be these two. But then again at what cost or trouble?

Southern San d'Oria bustled under the noon sun. Despite living quietly in East Ronfaure, Rampart enjoyed an occasional visit to the city. He dismissed Raiden as to not cause a fuss inside the city walls and entered the Elvaan capital. "I hope I can find them in all this mess of people."

After a lunch and several hours of walking around and being hassled by bazaarists, Rampart found what he was looking for. "Yekaphy's Odds, Ends, and Herbs," mused the dragoon shaking his head and smiling.

A small bell at the front desk rang and Rampart shouted a hello. There was no answer. He tried again and nothing. After a minute of curious browsing for both the twins and curious buables, he felt a tap on his back. Rampart turned around to see Phyree materialize in front of him, smiling widely.

"Hello Rampart, so good to see you again."

Before he responded he heard another voice come into existence, "Yes very good."

"Ladies, please, you know how much it scares me when you do that."

In unison they said "We're sorry" and burst out laughing beside him.

The three had a meeting and Rampart discussed his dreams, particularly the one about his old mentor who he never saw after returning with him with the wyrmling Raiden.

"Your training is complete," Rampart quoted his old master to the twins, "I can only teach you how to use that spear. You have a new partner now and must develop your own way of working with him. That I cannot help you do. You are on your own now, boy."

"Aww that's so sweet," mused Phyree.

"Aww that's so sad," lamented Yekan.

"Now you see why I am so concerned. You all study the magicks, do you think my dreams mean anything has happened to him?"

"Maybe."

"Could be."

Rampart sighed dejectedly at the responses.

"From what we hear," started Phyree, "there have been some strange goings-on at the tomb of King Ranperre," finished Yekan.

"Perhaps there..."

"...we may find a clue?"

Rampart shrugged as he was asked a question he was asking them to begin with.

"Let's go," bubbled Yekan.

"Yes, let's," brimmed Phyree.

His fate decided by the two blonde white mages, Rampart gave up confused. "How about I meet you two ladies at the gate to East Ronfaure in Northern San d'Oria tomorrow at 8:00 in the morning?"

The twins nodded to him but continued on in their excited chatter over the upcoming, according to them, "adventure."

{Sweet William}! Rampart is still alive and kicking! Yes, let's punch this sucker out. We've built up enough stars or whatever so we can go for the special move! That's how Punch Out worked, right? I don't really know. ^^;;
