November 1 is now here and of course I have writer's block and it's barely 12 hours into a month of sweating blood and crying tears to produce a 50,000 word novel for NaNoWriMo.

Anyone else doing it? I recall Nexa saying she might dip a toe into it this year. I'm staring at a blank screen with a blank mind, watching the Ravens beat up on the Broncos. At least I have that going for me today.

I don't even have a concept, much less a plotline.

Most excellent. I'm signing up now.

Normally I prefer screenplays, but novel writing has been a passing interest.

I managed to crank out a bit under 4k words before I stopped for the night around 5am.

I'm hoping to be at 10k by the time I go to bed tonight. That'd make things so much easier.

I discovered this little webpage:

http://www.felgall.com/jstip42.htm

Allow scripts on it if you use NoScript. It automatically counts your words as you type. Nothing is more motivating to hitting 1666 than seeing the number go up as you type! I hit 1829 today because I wanted to end at a good spot.

Once you're done, just copypasta over to Word.

I just set up a keybinding for "Word Count" in OO.o and hit that about every hour or so while I'm working on it.

Presently installing Server 2008 R2 on that computer (since my MSDN subscription runs out on Wednesday), so it's probably gonna be another hour before I start working on mine again today.

Once you're done, just copypasta over to Word.

MS Word 2007 also does this, for those who have it. I don't know about 2003 or OpenOffice, though I can't see why OpenOffice wouldn't, since it doesn't sound technically challenging.

Well, maybe not another 6k, but at least a good 1380 words in today, putting me about halfway through the old outline. Didn't help that Server '08 R2 took about four times as long as I'd expected to install...

Word has been doing it for as long as I can remember. I'd be surprised if OpenOffice didn't but I use that at home and don't use it as much for home stuff.

Open Office wasn't it doing it as a typed, or if it does, I can't figure out how to make it display it. I don't want to have to hit the "Show word count" button. I want to see the word counter go up automatically as my fingers fly on the screen.

I lack Office 2007.

I once worked out a concept for a story when I was younger, and even wrote a few pages of it before getting bored. Turns out someone wrote it anyway.

They don't have to be any good, they just have to be 50k words. In fact, that's kinda the goal.

Quote:
National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.

I don't know if it's necessarily any good (it's more readable than gbaji's posts, which is at least a valid accomplishment considering the pace I'm setting), but I'm up to just under 8k now.

At this rate, I may have 50k by the 10th. (Heh. Yeah, right.)

Anyone care to provide NaNo profile links so I can compare progress?

I promise not to laugh at people who are going at under the ~1.7k/day pace. (I had enough years where 170 words a day would have been fast that it's not worth Karma biting my ass over it.)

Me. The excerpt will get updated on the 5th with the next ~3 pages.

I'll probably try to write something. Literally just found out about it, I was somewhat surprised to find a topic on Alla's.

My issue is a lack of inspiration. I realize that you don't have to write a masterpiece for this, but I'm not sure I could stomach looking at my own work if it isn't good in my opinion.

Yeah, that's about how the last few years went for me.

I'm glad I'm finally revisiting something that appears to deserve it. I'm a quarter of the way to the 50k already, so assuming this pace keeps up (dangerous assumption, my muse has a bad habit of taking extended vacations) I'll hit 50k by the 12th.

And there's a weekend in there. I can probably kill most of the Oregon-Stanford game with writing.

Suddenly I feel like a massive overachiever. (17k and change as of stopping time tonight.)

You wouldn't happen to have an excerpt up yet, would you? (Also, I'll take opinions on the current excerpt I have - which will be updated every three days with the next three pages, so if you collect them you'll have my first 30 pages - at pretty much any time. If it's crap, meh, I'm not surprised. I never claimed to be a good writer.)
