How dumb do you think this piece of theater will get?

I'm betting 11th hour, no default.

Unfortunately, Intrade is having 'issues'.

You predict that Congress will **** around until the last possible second and then slap a stop-gap solution on it for the next few months before starting all over again?

That's a might brave stance, there.

That could totally never happen with all these fine, upstanding, and hardworking politicritters in office.

I don't know, I wouldn't underestimate the self destructive wing of the GOP. They've convinced the base that Obamacare is the worst thing possible, their base wants them to shut the government down rather than fund it.

I going for pushing us over the edge finally. Then things get really messy for a few days and they slap another temporary solution on it.

Talk is already that Boehner plans to give up his gavel after the midterms. If this crap doesn't convince him, who knows what would.

Well, yes, obviously there won't be a prolonged slow slide into insolvency for the US treasury.

The people that elected a GOP majority house? I don't think it's particularly hypocritical for them do attempt to fulfill their campaign promises. The fact that created a straw man to demand burning isn't really relevant. They should try to burn it if they can.

The Senate will laugh this back to them with the funding restored in <Cruz/Paul Filibuster - 11 seconds>

I believe there are enough non-Jacobin R's who will negotiate. They can't look like that are negotiating, for survival reasons, but I believe they will, for different survival reasons.

The whole thing would be hilarious if it wasn't so pathetic.

Boehner was forced into passing a bill defunding the ACA. The plan was that when the Senate voted down the bill, Boehner could say "Hey, we tried" and then get a bill out funding the ACA. Then Senator Cruz started saying that if the House passes a Senate bill funding the ACA, it's because the House failed. So Boehner said Cruz should be worrying about the Senate. So now Cruz says he'll filibuster any bill that funds the ACA. Aside from Reid saying "Yeah, we're not going to pass a defunding House bill", it's been a complete circular firing squad.

As long as people who give him money are a subset of 'the American people,' he's all save and stuff.

I don't remember who it was (Ambinder?) who summed it up: A vote to default will be disastrous for the United States. But Republicans voting to allow a default will suffer no consequences.

I'd prefer if they constructed a hilarious budget that restored funding for the ACA while cutting every R pet program to the bone while raising taxes on those making over 250k. Then they can pass a realistic "bipartisan compromise bill" later.

A vote to default will be disastrous for the United States.

Well that's hyperbole. Nothing would be "disastrous" for the United States, short of declaring war on China or the like. It would be a mild inconvenience for a little while for the United States. The political pound of flesh taking, on the other hand, would probably hurt a lot of middle class folks.

You don't get a two sentence summation by dwelling on details. I completely bungled it up anyway... It was Ezra Klein:
Quote:
Here's the Republican Party's problem, in two sentences: It would be a disaster for the party to shut down the government over Obamacare. But it's good for every individual Republican politician to support shutting down the government over Obamacare.

The second part of that sentence is true.
