I too was excited by the early own goal, but then it turned out it was still Brazil and Croatia after all. Brazil scores 4 goals and wins 3-1.
...Is an own goal -1 points?

Yes, sort of, one for the other side. When your own player kicks the ball into your goal, by mistake, hopefully. Fairly rare to see. I believe this was the first time Brazil had done so in world cup play.

Not like the guy could really help it, more of a wrong place, wrong time thing than a mistake he made.

And tonight we'll get to see the Netherlands lose miserably to Spain, yaaay!

At least they came back and won so all could be forgiven. Poor guy would have needed to seek asylum in Russia or someplace if Croatia had managed to hang on. Smiley: rolleyes

Would've been funny if Brazil had lost but it wasn't meant to be.

Nah, it's Brazil, the whole national identity is not really caring that intensely about anything. Even futebol.

You mean aside from Brazil being one of the most football crazy countries in the world? They even gave the entire country a free day yesterday to watch to match...

Cameroun/Mexico was pretty slow, mainly because Cameroon took to playing six in defence. Hopefully Spain/Netherlands will be a better game.

Seems unlikely to be much of a contest. Ruud Van Nistelrooy isn't walking through that door.

If the Dutch play like they did last time, neither will half of Spain's team.

At the very least nobody has high expectations of the Dutch team so no pressure there.

Wow, Spain's Olympic chances look great at the next Summer games.

In diving, obviously.

Not really a dive, he stepped on the Dutch guy's foot and fell because of that. Definitely not a penalty though.

I've taken solace in the fact none of the bad calls so far have really changed the final result in a way that seemed somehow unfair. Mexico and Brazil both deserved to win. At this rate though it's only a matter of time before we get a good controversy.

I'll be waiting.

Smiley: popcorn

Football really needs a video ref that players can call on, similar to the way they do it in field hockey. Eliminates so many bad calls and stops all the whining to the refs as well.

Yeah, that goal aside, Spain looks amazing. If it ends 1 nil, though, I think you'll hear polite dissent from the low country folks.

WOW! or 1 - 1 I guess.
