I had pertussis at 25 because no one told me I needed a booster.

Let me reiterate.

YOU NEED AN EFFIN BOOSTER FOR WHOOPING COUGH BY AGE 20-22 OR ELSE YOU CAN GET IT AND IT SUCKS.

I was sick for over a month. You basically feel normal, but every couple of minutes you begin coughing so bad you feel like you are trying to vomit a lung. Then you feel normal again. Once you start getting better, you start to cough up horrible white stringy crap (which is the junk your lungs had been trying to cough up all along.)

At the time I was still working in a call center and they forbade me to come in for a week, not just because I was probably contagious, but also because I was coughing so loudly I disturbed everyone else in the office.

I can see why that disease can kill infants. I thought I was going to die as a healthy 25 year old.

After I got better, I went and got the TDaP booster I'd missed, in case the tetanus and diptheria bits had worn off too.

Are you sure that wasn't worms? It sounds like worms.

I'm pretty sure my bout of it wasn't nearly that bad, but that's only if we assume that it wasn't what tried to kill me a few months later.

Smasharoo posted a couple of interesting links, here's another.* In addition to the unnecessary costs to all of us associated with needless care, and in addition to the source of danger from non-vaccinated children, there's the needless deaths of helpless children caused by uninformed parents.

Jenny McCarthy is just another uninformed fool. The damage done by this man, though, is criminal.

* I noticed that blip in 1989-91 for Measles deaths and wonder what caused it? Not curious enough to go find out though.

Wakefield is basically the anti-vax version of a scientist "skeptical" of man-made climate change. He's been widely discredited by his peers & no one can reproduce his results (that were terribly attained to begin with). But its all "really" a big conspiracy AGAINST him!

Thanks everyone, this thread inspired me to go check if I needed boosters. I did, and I got 6 within 2 injections. I was especially glad to get the whooping cough because I have baby and young nieces and nephews. The doctor also said a couple of them were very serious to get as an adult, and I had no antibodies to those two. Measles and Mumps, maybe?

Tetanus death rates dropped like a rock starting in 1990. Treatment must have improved significantly.

What really happened was that any time someone stepped on a rusty nail, Big Hardware sent out a hit squad to run them over with a car. Thus, all deaths that should have been attributed to tetanus and the obviously defective nails was misattributed to automotive accidents. And Big Auto didn't care because they were too busy dealing with all those defects of their own. But that's a story for another time. Spoiler Alert: It involves aliens and the first Thanksgiving.

And once again the winners were Big Medicine and Big Law?

Actually, you'd be surprised. Big Medicine lost out on treating all those patients...dead at the scene and all that. And Big Law, well sure auto accident suits are worth something, but not as much as one big *** Defective Nail class action suit.

The earliest you can be vaccinated is 2 months, so no, ***hole "you're kids are vaccinated what's the problem?" doesn't work. I know pediatricians that had literally never seen a case of pertussis until about 10 years ago. Now, about a dozen children a year who can't be vaccinated because they are too young die from it. The good news is that's a small number, when you look at all infant deaths likely attributable to incomplete "heard immunity" it gets to be hundreds. That's hundreds of dead infants too young to have been vaccinated.

That completely sets aside kids who were vaccinated and for whatever reason the vaccine didn't "work". It happens. The idea is that since it happens rarely, if everyone is vaccinated there will be no vector for the outlying failed vaccinations to get infected. Unless your sister is in town, obviously. Those people die, too. Flu is a thing, by the way. People need to stop thinking "no big deal just flu" because it's common. A lot of people die from flu. Most years hundreds of kids die from flu, fortunately, about 90% of them aren't vaccinated, the other 10% probably just live near your sister.

It's a problem. For me, not for your sister. She's adding to my child's risk, just as she would be if she was driving drunk. "You're driving sober, what's the problem" isn't a compelling argument, either.

This so much this. The Flu is thought to be one of the possible causes for my congestive heart failure. The virus either attacked my heart directly or my immune system attacked it mistaking it for the virus. Needless to say I learned a hard lesson, had I went to the doctor sooner or just got a flu shot then I might have been able to avoid needing a transplant. Now I'm one of the many people your sister is putting at risk and if her child ever should need a transplant they could be passed over or wait longer to receive a organ.

I received one about 3 years ago so I have been kicking around pretty good. I spent 2 and a half years on the list with a LAVD much like the one **** Cheney had before he got his new heart(think it might have been the same brand). While lolgaxe is joking I did kinda get something like it with a run down of age, sex, state it came from, weight, height. Those last two are the only other factors when getting a heart after blood type. Only thing left off was race and identity. They provide a care package that you can fill out and send to the donor family though the organ donation organization and if they want to they can reply or remain anonymous. Something interesting I learned though this is they ask you before being put on the list if you would have a problem getting a organ from outside your race. I found that amusing for obvious reasons.

I was able to receive some of the booster shots before going on the list while my immune system was still 100%, others were to risky or would have taken to long to dissipate if a organ had come up with in the fist month or so. I can and do get the Flu shot every year now. I had to provide a compete vaccination history to be accepted onto the list that is why I said it could prevent or delay being accepted onto the list as they are kinda tight fisted with who gets organs(well there are exceptions).
