Same thing happened to me in this thread (post #40). I had used the correct medical terminology for a women's peepee. Initially it wasn't censored - then it was. The censoring was pretty coincidental with the return of Varus.

Smiley: tinfoilhat

I had to change up the wording. This made Lolgaxe's post below completely senseless.

The interesting thing is that it seems to be completely replacing the word as well. So like you know normally if someone wrote a naughty word you'd see %^&*, but if you went to quote them the real word would be there. Now it's **** on that screen as well.

In that statement you would be 100% absolutely dead wrong. Do a search for "banned from google adsense" and you will see hundreds of sites with forums that received the same "cease and desist or service will be terminated" that we did from google adsense. They only restored ours after I edited the 40 some odd initial offending post that caused the cease and desist in the first place. The sites that did not comply were removed from the ability to use or be funded by google adsense, and that makes a very large chunk of the theoretical available ad revenue for a large website. They also made available a list of words that they check for on sites. As it is a text search, I'm guessing ones with creative use of site formatting codes in the middle may not scan properly, but they do have a filtering system of some sort in place, it identifies objectionable content, disables your ad and revenue feed, then sends you the ultimatum with a deadline to comply. I don't know if anyone at google proper actually cares, but they put a system in place that certainly does, and one that has targeted us once before. We lose that ad revenue, we lose the site host funding. It's that simple.

Yes, and you are a panicky little girl who craves nothing more than being a tool for authority. If there was a "Google Jr. Obscenity Enforcer" tin badge, you'd wear it all the time.

Google simply does not care about forum posts here. You probably know this, but the ability to channel all that hall monitor moralism is too overwhelming. Twenty seconds talking to someone at Google would resolve this with no effort on your part. This website's forums are, in no way, the profile they are seeking to avoid.

If by "twenty seconds talking to someone at Google" you mean a 4 day process with a 90% appeal denial rate even for sites with legitimate content in their target demographic that we went through and were lucky to get the account turned back on during which the site lost about an eighth of a month worth of revenue, then yeah. 20 seconds. The process sucks, the filter sucks, Google sucks, and this whole thing is unnecessary and annoying. But pinning it on me being the one that wants this is just damned stupid. And quite frankly insulting.

That wacky Ann Coulter, being all 'satirical' again...

Quote:
Why did Dr. Brantly have to go to Africa? The very first “risk factor” listed by the Mayo Clinic for Ebola — an incurable disease with a 90 percent fatality rate — is: “Travel to Africa.”

Can’t anyone serve Christ in America anymore?
[...]
If Dr. Brantly had practiced at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles and turned one single Hollywood power-broker to Christ, he would have done more good for the entire world than anything he could accomplish in a century spent in Liberia. Ebola kills only the body; the virus of spiritual bankruptcy and moral decadence spread by so many Hollywood movies infects the world.
[...]
Which explains why American Christians go on “mission trips” to disease-ridden cesspools. They’re tired of fighting the culture war in the U.S., tired of being called homophobes, racists, sexists and bigots. So they slink off to Third World countries, away from American culture to do good works, forgetting that the first rule of life on a riverbank is that any good that one attempts downstream is quickly overtaken by what happens upstream.

I just want to know what's with the 90% mortality rate thing I keep hearing from conservative media. The death rate was only 55% in this outbreak at my last check, and while it's expected to rise a bit it doesn't appear to be as bad as in previous rounds of this thing (where the rate was as high as 90% in the worst one, which is where I'm guessing the number was grabbed from...).

Of course, ironically enough, that could be a bit more worrisome, as it may indicate this strain is better adapted to living in us than previous ones. Smiley: frown

Wiki says between 50% and 90%, so they used the bigger number because that's the responsible thing to do.

I don't know if the strains are all that different, or if the numbers reflect the stage and degree of intervention.

Just as an example.

Quote:
Studies of three outbreaks of Ebola hemorrhagic fever in Zaire and Sudan have shown that human mortality resulting from Zaire strains of Ebola virus was 90% while that resulting from Sudan strains was 55%–65%. Zaire strains were much easier to isolate in cell culture than all of the Sudanese agents; also, fewer than 10 infectious particles of a Zaire strain were lethal for suckling mice, whereas 10,000 infectious particles of a Sudan strain failed to kill any of these animals. These biologic data indicate that these antigenically related viruses are different, a conclusion supported by genetic, biochemical, and immunologic data.

RNA viruses evolve notoriously quickly. Smiley: frown

If something has a high mortality rate and a short gestation time it can be difficult to sustain an outbreak. If the stain can evolve to be less deadly (which is actually really common as killing your host isn't a good thing in general), or kill more slowly, or have a longer gestation time (think HIV). That can help sustain an outbreak. The fear isn't that you're facing something with a 90% mortality rate that kills you quickly, the fear is something with a 40% mortality rate that uses that as an opportunity to spread widely (think black plague). That's something that can easily happen as a host and infectious agent evolve to be more tolerant of each other.

Untreated symptomatic rabies, probably so. There's some evidence that a small percentage of us are immune, or at least able to survive without treatment. A handful of people tested for the antibodies in Peru tested positive without ever having had symptoms. Probably thought they'd had flu, or some such.

People treated with fluids, antivirals and neural meds occasionally survive.

My mom saw a few people with rabies, way back when before the vaccine was available. She said it was horrifying, watching someone go through that with nothing to be done for them.
