I'd like to think my game community name and facebook account are sufficiently separate that I wouldn't be easily tracked, but I'm not going to pretend they are. I think they are far enough apart that I'm not really visible by the average users. My most commonly used name yields the obvious results on searching. I'm sure once someone finds my email address they'd find everything though.

Funny; I was gonna ask about that yesterday.

So, is that whence you derived your posting moniker?

This is one of the reasons i stopped doing it. It started to get embarrassingly easy to find most personal information, thus boring.

I have a hard time taking the idea of doxing as threatening when most people put that crap up on their facepages. It's like saying they're fearing for their lives because people can read.

Was she trolling? I honestly don't know which is why I'm asking. It's my understanding she, like the original gamergate woman, was critical of the misogyny & got dox'd & threatened because of it.

While I understand kicking the hornets nest that is the internet isn't the best idea, being critical of the crazier aspects of the #gamergate movement shouldn't result in the ruining of one's life, should it? Yet repeatedly, when people speak out against those aspects & happen to have a vAgina, people go out of there way to do just that.

It isn't right & it takes the focus away from the other more legitimate issues the gamergate movement may have. "Blaming" the victim before denouncing those actions implies one feels that the actions of the woman, being critical of gamergate, justifies the life ruining- even if that isn't your true thoughts on the subject.

Its my understanding most "doxing" is done by paying for background checks on individuals, as most people don't put their home addresses on their facebook pages. "Hacks" are done by using publicly available info, as well as background checks, to answer password questions, change passwords, & then get access to accounts.

I don't list my home address on Facebook but my name and home city are there. And that alone is enough to find out what properties I own, taxes I've paid, and addresses of properties I own within a few minutes on the county website without paying for a background check. Home addresses are pretty open to the public. I hunted down a couple in California within 10 minutes trying to find the owners of the land behind me and I have very few skills. I doubt these people are paying to do background checks to find out this stuff when I can spend 10 minutes with basic resources and find similar info.

Heh, it is hard to take seriously someone who flees a home due to an anonymous tweet. Not to say that I am not enjoying this the same way I would enjoy a good train wreck. Also, whoever is sending those tweets seems to have vested interests in keeping this fake issue alive.
It's kind of like putting a Tea Party nutter and a fanatical member of the Occupy movement in the same room and watching them go at it. I'm starting to wonder about the motives of the people who are keeping this going as well though. It would be nice if things could simmer down a little before someone actually does something stupid in real life.

In the case of Gawker Media or Cracked, I think the motivation is obvious: Smiley: twocents

Page clicks, sure. But Jezebel & Gawker both also tend to have a liberal slant to them & tend to stand up against things like racism, homophobia, & sexism. Calling the #gamergate movement a hate group, while not exactly "wrong" as many of the trolls certainly would fall into that category, isn't exactly accurate though. But again, the trolls of #gamergate are so much louder than anyone reasonable that is associated with the movement that it really makes it hard to distinguish between the two.

That just dictates who their click-bait needs to be tailored to attract. And why they keep making sure to bring it up and don't want this issue to die down.

Fun Fact: That article you linked has another four links in it to other Gawker Media pages (two Gawker, two Kotaku). I clicked one of those and found six more links to other Gawker Media pages. Yo dawg, I heard you like click-bait...

At least a couple times, people have gone further than calling #gamergate a hate group and have instead gone straight to "The Tech World's ISIS".

I like to think I'm a pretty shallow person. I like to watch anime targeted at pubescent children. I like to criticize movies for being awful when I couldn't produce anything better. I even barely think about the fact that each and every cashew was shelled by hand for pennies per as I scarf them down.

Even I can't see why this is a thing.
