There's nothing to "infer" as he says it directly. You can say that you'll argue semantics over an ill defined topic, sure. But pointing out a direct quote doesn't lend itself to playing the "semantics!" game unless the author is just exceptionally shitty and inarticulate.

Which, you know, you might be right after all.

Take sides all you want, but realize that you're sympathizing with and/or making excuses for really bad anti-social behavior. It doesn't matter that Zoe slept around on her boyfriend. It doesn't matter that another girl gamer 'poked' a website. It dosen't matter that Anita publishes her questionable research in video format.

The news here is people making death threats on women in the gaming industry. That's the news. That's what you're siding with. That's what keeps this going.

So what you are saying is... anyone who isn't with me is a woman hating ****?

Because that is all it really boils down to. Everyone who DARES to disagree is a major male misogynistic ****. That is not a good start for any kind of conversation.

Do you even begin to see a problem?

I had a mean thing to say, but you may misconstrue my suggestion as a veiled threat or something.

This whole ethics in gaming journalism bit. wtf? What is gaming journalism? Game reviews? Who gives a ****? I assume all reviewers are basically paid off. Are you telling me they aren't always?

Edited, Oct 14th 2014 5:15pm by Xsarus

I am a sad panda, because this is considered a given. Zero punctuation seems even handed in distributing hate.

But you are, naturally, correct. Game reviews have little to do with journalism. Maybe they should. But they don't.

Come to think of it... how did restaurants manage to keep non-professional reviewers from ruining reputations of established restaurants? Didn't hotels in NY start suing individual yelp posters?

Maybe I am asking for too much, but if all I am getting is advertising, maybe I should:

a) know it is advertising

b) have some basic rules about what cannot be done ( blatant lies )

c) get all the info about the included drms and whether the game is mostly multiplayer

What I am getting at is that we kinda let it happen. Few industries could have gotten away with the **** gaming industry does on a regular basis.

I got tired of Gbaji whiping out that argument so I just replaced the a with another i.

It made the cranky old man rants somewhat more intelligible.

Another threat against Anita. Okay, so against a university because Anita was holding a talk, if we want to be technical. This one sounds like an Elliot Rodger wannabe. I had to look up who the hell Marc Lepine was.

MundaneMatt more or less says what I would want to say.

Yeah, I'm with him on that. This is the problem I have with ratcheting up the discourse on any topic - it releases the kraaken crazy.

The sad thing here is the threats were successful in keeping Anita from giving her talk.

I bet a manifesto written in Sarkeesian's spilled blood would be sticky and unpleasant to read.

She says she canceled because Utah's concealed carry laws would have let anyone come into the event with a gun on them and campus police refused to do gun searches. Can we mix the firearm debate into this now? Because that would be good times.

I guess my only question is why did she even agree in the first place if she disagreed with the policies? This stuff isn't exactly fine print third page of software TOS agreement hidden material.

Well, "I want the police to stop people from shooting me" probably moved up on the priority list after someone said they were going to come and shoot her.

I couldn't tell you the concealed carry laws for pretty much anywhere (much less for individual properties) but I'd likely be inspired to find out if someone was threatening to murder me and write manifestos with my blood (the cholesterol makes the pen tip just glide over the parchment)

She agreed to talk at a university. Threats were made. When the decision to talk or not needed to be made in light of the death threats, the conceal carry law made a difference in the determination.

Gees, you really want to demonize this woman.

But, according to her at least, she's been getting these kinds of threats pretty much her entire career. I guess what I'm curious about is what's different about this one over all the others in the past.

*Shrug* Maybe other places were more accommodating on the security front when asked or when threats were made. Maybe she doesn't travel to Utah much and was unaware of the differences there and that the police would flatly refuse to search people for guns. Beats me. I don't think it's especially incriminating in of itself.

I'm not a misogynist. If you're going to sink to name-calling at least get your terminology straight.

The obvious thing here is that the University was threatened because she was speaking. You can find a conspiracy in there if you'd like, but that's this is the story I'm going with. Occam's razor and all that.

The simplest explanation also tends to be wrong. Mindless platitudes and all that.

Look, again I get that the only reason you feel the need to defend her is because she is, in fact, a her, but some of us are more interested in the whole truth thing and less on someone's reproductive organs.

The truth is she's getting threatened.

You can't handle the truth?

Conflicting evidence...Lol.
