In the spirit of football season...Follow

Since tonight is the first week of the regular season, and we have a fairly decent game going, I thought I'd point out this little story http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11467290/oakland-raiders-settle-cheerleader-lawsuit-125-million].

Quote:
OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders have agreed to pay $1.25 million to settle a lawsuit alleging they failed to pay their cheerleaders minimum wage.

The team and attorneys for the cheerleaders released a statement Thursday announcing the settlement. The two sides will seek approval of the deal in Alameda County Superior Court on Sept. 26.

The settlement covers 90 Raiderettes who worked for the team from 2010 to '13.

The proposal calls for each cheerleader to be paid an average of $6,000 for each season worked from 2010 to '12, and $2,500 for the 2013 season to cover unpaid expenses and minimum wage. The Raiders raised their pay in 2013, leading to the smaller settlement for that season.

So by my estimate, considering most lawyers take 40% off the top, these gals got a pool of $750,000 between 90 women, roughly working out to $8333 each.*

While 8k is nothing to sneeze at, it's not really a whole hell of a lot either. Certainly not in the scope of a 1.25M settlement. I've always considered most lawsuits as trivial, and have held the personal belief that resorting to lawyering up on things just seems like bad ju-ju.

Is it worth it? I gotta think that there's some bad press involved, perhaps even a few burnt bridges and a black mark of sorts on your reputation. I know it's California, which is sue-happy anyways, but still...

You'd think gals hot enough and talented enough to make it on a Pro-team cheerleader squad could find easier ways to get some quick cash. You know, like hooking up with a rich guy or something.

*I am not an accountant, so take that for what you will.

Most rich guys either have prenup power-up by now, or they approach those cheerleaders in a manner indicated here.

In other words, this economy has taken a toll on everyone. Thanks Obama!

Unless things have changed dramatically in the last decade or so, that's a righteous crapton of money for a cheerleader even if it accounts for several seasons. Professional cheerleading is (oddly) something I have some knowledge of, trust me when I say those girls are not in it for the money. At least not per se, in my experience they are driven by a completely different set of priorities.

If I had to venture a guess I'd say there was probably legal footing on a state level for this? Did CA have a minimum wage change around the times they're paying out for failing to honor? I'm just speculating wildly here but maybe there was a more valid reason for this lawsuit. Contrary to popular belief there are actually a lot of good reasons to sue people, you just don't hear much about them because they make sense. Sensible things can rarely be made sensational.

Most of them have regular jobs. Some have less regular jobs, but most work. Which can be quite difficult when you consider how football seasons work.

Related but unrelated: I think doctors should have more control over the naming process of children. They should look at the certificate and be allowed to veto the choice up to three times, and if it isn't a real name by then they get to choose a name.

Because **** a name like Ha'Sean 'Ha Ha' Clinton-Dix.

Gotta say I agree with you there.

The marrying of a rich guy comment was meant facetiously, but I admit that article made me chuckle.

Why does some strange baby name cause you such angst?

And why would you let the doc choose a name?

Might as well just have a default name/number set by the courts and doled out at the hospital. Legolas is taken, may I suggest Legolas7695z?

You'd think a woman old enough to be on a pro-team cheerleader squad was sentient enough to understand she's a human being and not simply a mans possession.

Smiley: disappointed You've not been paying attention.

The benefit of that, if I remember Gbaji's explanation is that you might not need to pay them minimum wage.

Less than that, actually. Green Bay was paying about fifty bucks per game for a number of years. My babysitter has a considerably higher wage expectation.

Well I'm glad to see they finally worked out that little debacle. I'll reiterate my general opinion that minimum wage is a good thing, even for pretty women who bounce around with pom poms.

Also, very happy the see the Seahawks didn't fall apart over the offseason. I actually caught myself thinking they might be capable of making it to the playoffs again this year. Well until I jinx them like that of course...

We should just stop the charade already give them swords and blunt weapons and let them have at it. The Romans had entertainment right it seems.

I don't think a cow would be able to really compete with lions and bears. That sounds like an awfully cruel suggestion from PETA.
