Still Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.

Ok, the whole midnight shopping thing has thrown a bit of wrench into the works but still, nothing like a pointless holiday that yields two paid days off, full justification to create + cook + eat pretty much unlimited amounts of hearty and even somewhat tasteful food. And the kids are sort of forced by social protocol to come home.

Anyone traveling this week?

My son and his gf will also be at our t-day table. His current job, manning the door of the Best Buy store, will take him away early Thursday however.
My daughter and her bf will also be home. The bf finally nabbed his PhD last week. I bought him some local craft beer (is this a sufficient graduation present??).

There shall be some celebration and board gaming.

It's raining out, but I'm thankful for only two days of work this week and my beautiful pink umbrella.

I'm thankful for microwave ovens and Nooks.

I'm thankful for this forum to keep me distracted from my work. Though it could use more......I dunno, something. People posting maybe.

You?

We make our way to the frozen wasteland, which, the "Welcome to Maine" signs assure me, is now "open for business". What a relief. I imagine that the many entrepreneurs who previously turned south or west back to New Hampshire when they saw the old signs now break into a happy grin and continue driving right to Blaine House where they are showered with money and, I assume, gubernatorial blowjobs.

Family, friends, health. We're getting the two clans together, which is a yearly festival in and of itself. Quiet and reserved Japanese family and loud and clamorous Italian family, culturally head to head, always a sight to see. And the food is all over the place and in ridiculous quantities. Dinner and a show, really. I'll probably be food shopping and cooking most of Wednesday, so that should be fun.

Just the household this year. I'm picking up the bird from the turkey farm on the way home tonight and I'll be doing most of the Thanksgiving cooking as usual. Strangely, Peruvian immigrants don't place a bunch of heart and soul into tales of European immigrants coming by and making nice with the natives and will happily let the day pass without celebration if you let them.

No major plans for the rest of the weekend. Lots of family relaxing, a bunch of DA: Inquisition as time allows. Christmas is going to be a road trip to Virginia so I'm happy to keep this holiday casual.

Edit: Oh, and making soup stock. Can't forget about the soup stock.

No traveling for me, and I have next week off, so yay! I plan to be in a turkey-based coma, briefly; then in between rain showers I expect I'll be doing some city wide roaming about and lots of gaming.

Three day work week, followed by a four day weekend, and then my birthday is next Tuesday. I've been put in charge of the potatos for this year's feast, both the sweet and the regular. I'll probably also assist in the preparation of the bird, which is currently in the bottom of the refrigerator defrosting. It will just be me and my son, my sister, her partner, my nephew, my mom and one uncle this year, as the other uncle and his family won't be joining us. Later in the day, I'll probably swing by my dad's house to see him.

Thanksgiving used to be my favorite holiday, but now with divorced parents and being divorced myself, I'm kind of over it.

One thing I like to do with sweet potatoes it so bake them then slice them (about 1/2 to 3/4 inch slices). Arrange them on the serving dish, and drizzle cranberry sauce or cranberry chutney over them. It's yummy - the tartness of the cranberry blends nicely with the bland sweetness of the potatoes.

Of course you're probably already committed to the marshmallow covered sweet potato pie thing, being in the South and all.

This sounds tasty.

We're going with squash to avoid the whole sweet potato and marshmallow debacle. Who ever decided marshmallow was a baking ingredient?

My husband informed me that my nice fresh(frozen) garden green beans were going to get bathed in cream-of-something soup and covered by those dried canned crunch onion things. Smiley: frown

The price one pays for abdicating cooking responsibilities for the day.

Man, what is wrong with just steaming the green beans and throwing on a little butter? Or cook 'em down with some bacon or ham hock, if you must.

Creamed soup out of a can is an abomination. Smiley: motz

This makes me want to re-watch the Buffy episode where she cooks Thanksgiving dinner while Willow and Giles argue about imperialism. Smiley: laugh

Green bean casserole is an American Thanksgiving must have. And it has to be made with Campbell's Cream of Mushroom and French's fried onions. Tradition!

I made a deep fried turducken for real thanksgiving. I think next time I'm going to stop at ducken. Duck skin is too good to put it inside something.

If you are worried about clogged arteries during Thanksgiving you are doing it wrong.

Since my family has scattered since my parents died, Jonwin and I are going to his brother's house for Thanksgiving Dinner , where his mom and sister-in-law will do the cooking. After dinner Jonwin will drop me off at hotel were I'll be at convention until Sunday. (Chessiecon with Tamora Pierce as Guest of Honor for those interested.)

Sunday Evening after thr convention is over, I've invited friends and family to join us in celebrating my Birthday by eating Korean Baroque. I'll be 56 on Tuesday, party is Sunday so we can have my grand kids join us.

There's a chain of steakhouses that originated in New Orleans called Ruth's Chris. One of their sides is a sweet potato souflee topped with a candied pecan crust. I love it because the topping gets a nice crunch to it to counter the boring smoothness of the potatoes.

Oh, and marshmallows are for roasting and hot chocolate, not sweet potatoes.

Edit: Kept forgetting the e's in my potatoes.
