I only tried to read one of his books and didn't much care for it but maybe I got a dud. Anyway, I can't deny that the guy was popular within certain circles and probably should have been right in my wheelhouse.

I did meet him once fleetingly, when a girlfriend had me go with her to a book signing. We got there hella early and I was second in a rather sizable line. He remarked something about me being a dedicated fan to be right at the front of the line and I was all "Actually, I have no idea who you are. Here sign this book for my girlfriend since it's only one book per person..."

I think he was probably humble enough to see the humor.

His death was not unexpected; but I have to admit, I'm feeling selfishly melancholy.

Does the barista have to respond affirmatively when I say "Dude, Asian chicks... am I right?"

"Starbucks policy requires me to say: You know it, man."

Given the percentage of neck beard slacker barristas, I don't think they'd need a policy for this.

Congressman Aaron Schock is resigning over questions about his office's spending, donor gifts and misrepresenting his federal finance records.

Apparently that doesn't play in Peoria.

Edit: Two 'c's in Schock.

Yeah, after Downton Abby. Which is perhaps embarrassing but not "wrong". Using taxpayer money to take trips to football games and expensing your leisure activities to your office as "software expenses" on the other hand probably is wrong.

Unrelated, I was just followed by @USTermLimits on Twitter. I guess they didn't know that I'm generally opposed to term limits.

Dunno about the football games if they're local, could probably write that off as an expense to keep himself in view of his constituency. "Oh look at me, I love the local sports team. Vote for me" kind of thing. Writing it off as a software expense though, not so much.

The office was just the first thing that came to mind.

Nah, he's from downstate and the game was in Chicago. Was $3,000 of taxpayer money for the flight and tickets.

I'm not even saying that $3k is the end of the world but apparently he has a number of similar spending incidents, all adding up.

That's what elections are for. If you don't like the guy, vote for the other guy. Unless the other guy is worse then stick with the first guy.

Also expensing more than twice the mileage you actually used is frowned upon, generally. Plus taking your personal photographer along on a fact finding mission on world poverty is just tacky.

I don't disagree that all of it together is what did him in and deserving to have his knuckles racked over, just that a politicritter going to a game or two for (arguably, anyway) some face time isn't really an issue for me.

I mean, when Hilary went to see the Yankees, I know she wasn't there to see the Yankees.

I see that the Office of Congressional Ethics had started contacting Schock and others. I'm guessing what the papers dug up wasn't all of it. Whiff of an incoming independent investigation and "Abort! Abort!"

Yeah. Don't really know anything about the guy except this latest news, but from what I've gathered the questions about money spending has been ongoing, but there was no indication it was serious enough for this abrupt an action. Looks like there's something else going on to me.

I didn't either but given the superficial facts that he was a 30 something Republican who decorated his office like Downton Abbey I deduced he was born to a rich family, but thinks he worked hard to get where he is and that he hates gays and blacks.

Amazing! I'm like Mycroft Holmes over here!

Man, I don't want to generalize, but between this guy and Paul Ryan, it seems like there's a lot of homoerotic "working out" in the congressional gym these days. I'm trying to imagine the reaction if Obama had posed this way.

If that was the criteria for resignation, there wouldn't be very many Democrats in office.

My first instinct (based solely on the whole decorating choice bit) was that he is gay and this for some reason requires resignation. That seems a bit far fetched as well though (not the being gay bit, but the needing to resign because of it). So... No clue. Someone dug up photos of him at a swingers party? Something like that. Or there's a body buried somewhere. That will usually do it.

It doesn't seem farfetched that he'd have to resign rather than be an openly gay GOP congressman? I guess that makes sense, I mean the GOP has no issue electing gays to congress like...um...well...Jim Kolbe? No? 10 years ago. Oh, well. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd imagine at least 30% of the GOP delegation is gay..just as it happens, in the last 10 years there have been zero openly gay GOP congresspeople. Because you people are spineless cowards as everyone knows.

No secret mystery -- he resigned because he was misusing funds and about to get hit hard with an ethics investigation. When you bill 170,000 miles on your car and then sell it with an odometer reading 80,000 it's not because you might be gay.
