This is a really sad moment. I was so looking forward in DVR'ing The Daily Show instead of having to use a VPN to watch it. Maybe he'll work with Billy O at FOX News.

People liked him long before Obama. Not sure what that's explaining.

Don't be silly, the 2012 interview with Obama is the only reason he was rated highly in the 2009 poll.

Really? Maybe he was commenting on a comedian being one of America's most trusted news sources? Just a shot in the dark there.

So that explains why he is leaving?

See how the post he was responding to, comment, and link don't make much sense in context?

So, what exactly is this bit explaining?
OMG, this isn't rocket science Tirrith. He quoted you to show what he was speaking to. That is to say, not speaking about Larry whatshisname and whateverthatnewshowiscalled.

Well, last night I think the "round table" kind of redeemed itself a bit with last night's episode when they went back and discussed the previous round tables with some viewer questions/comments. It was a pretty good way of handling it.

Um.... It explains how so many people have such absurd political positions. When your most trusted news source is a guy who repeatedly excuses his positions with "I'm just a comedian", you're probably going to have some issues.

For me it's particularly funny because I've watched many people on this forum actually use Stewart as a source for a position they hold. Obviously, they failed to get the "he's just a comedian" memo.

I don't know who is using him as a "source" for their beliefs. I've seen people link to him because they thought he said something they already thought in an amusing and/or insightful manner but that's not the same thing.

Of course, Limbaugh had been using "I'm just an entertainer!" for a decade before anyone knew who Jon Stewart was so, if people are getting their insights from Stewart, the phenomenon is nothing new. I really think it's more an issue of sour grapes -- the conservatives suck at that sort of cutting humor (despite several attempts to try it so it's not as though they're just too proud) so the next best thing is to insist that it's "bad". Really, they're just feeling that it's "unfair" since they're outclassed.

I'd say it's more that conservatives tend to be influenced to a given position via the application of logic and reason to facts, while liberals tend to be influenced more by cutting dismissals or jokes about the opposition. For liberals, making a joke about something a conservative said or did constitutes a great way to shore up their own position. For conservatives, that's just a silly bit of irrelevancy that fails to address the issue.

And yeah, it does annoy us that so many people are successfully influenced by the sort of techniques used by and on the Left. It's somewhat scary when "Let's make fun of his ice cream story" and "he said he has binders full of women" is more effective at winning them votes than "Here's why my position on <relevant political issue> is best". And yeah, it speaks volumes about liberals when they trust Stewart as a news source more than any other. It just highlights how nutty they are.

Huh, I don't remember you complaining about "Obama's energy plan is tire pressure gauges!" complete with McCain's campaign handing out tire gauges. In fact, you actually argued that it WAS Obama's entire plan and I had to link to the full answer he gave to that's question to show it wasn't (even remotely close).

But I guess it's only those silly liberals who take a "let's make fun!" remark and run with it as the truth. Certainly not you... you're too much into "application of logic and facts" Smiley: laugh

They'll have more money and be able to protect you from what you are afraid of? Seems logical, and reasonable.

I think it's mainly that the unthinking defence of the status quo doesn't lend itself to humour.

Must be some rare breed of cave dwelling conservatives because the only thing the ones in politics and Zam know about logic and facts is how to spell those particular words, and a couple of them just barely and with assistance.

On a sort-of-related note, my roommate and I tried to watch a recent Dennis Miller stand up routine. The venue appeared to be a GOP function. My roomie, who is much farther to the right than I, couldn't stand to watch it after about 5 minutes. It was that bad. You'd think selling your soul to the devil would make you funnier, but apparently not.

Dennis Miller is terrible. Not as in "I disagree with him politically" because I'll listen to Limbaugh or local morning AM stations. But terrible as in "this is just garbage". His show is still on the B-List station so someone must be tuning in but I can't imagine who or why.

No real argument there. Although Franken at least had some memorable characters. I can remember the Victoria Jackson "type" she played in every skit but the skits themselves are just a blurry memory. Dennis Miller, of course, only had one job on the show.
