Not on the bus, but when driving...

On my route to work there is a very annoying school bus stop. It's a small two lane road, and a T intersection.

The bus stops at the T, and pulls slightly off to the side, blocking the T intersection. But the student at this stop does not actually wait at the stop, and apparently waits down at the end of the cul-de-sac inside their house until the bus arrives. Then proceeds to walk down the road and to the bus.

So the bus is stopped at the edge of the road, blocking the T, with it's right hand turn signal on. Occasionally it will throw it's flashing yellows, and then eventually when the kid finally reaches the bus the driver puts up the red flashers and stop sign.

If I show up and the driver only has his right turn signal on, or his yellow flashers, I usually wait a bit, look around, then slowly signal and pass him on the left. But more than once as soon as I get in the opposite lane and start to pass the driver, he throws up the stop sign and red flashers, leaving me stopped in the opposing traffic's lane.

What is the proper course of action here? Does he want me to stop, or pass? And why the hell isn't this damn kid at the bus stop waiting rather than 500+ feet down the road inside his house, making the bus wait for a couple minutes while he gets out and walks down the road?

Clearly he wants you to do what you want to do more than anything: circle around him, head up to the house with your horn blaring, and herd the ******* kid down to the ******* bus.

Sounds like a bus troll to me.

Have you ever been on a school bus? The driver doesn't give two fucks about you, she's just trying to keep the children from killing one another. I guarantee that unless you drive into a child, the driver is completely oblivious to your existence.

Complain to local PD that the bus is holding up traffic when there are no kids loading/unloading onto the bus for several minutes. Maybe they'll have a guy camp out and determine whether the bus driver is in the right or not.

That or take a few days off of work and picket the bus stop.

Definitely do this. Call 911 so you get their attention. This is something police will take VERY seriously.

That's fine and all, but the local PD puts out flyers each year and posts videos about the danger of ignoring school bus signals. The local bus barn seems to take it seriously.

As for the kid, or parents, who decide not to wait at the bus stop, I don't think that's normal. I remember when I was in elementary school (same area, I grew up here) my brother and I, and the other kids in the area, would all walk down to the bus stop and wait there for it. And the bus never stopped and waited for us. If there was no one at the stop when the bus came through, she kept driving.

That just means I'd be in traffic five minutes longer because early morning traffic distorts time and space.
