Much like the rest of the world, he probably thinks he is.

"Our world is increasingly a place of violent conflict, hatred and brutal atrocities, committed even in the name of God and of religion. We know that no religion is immune from forms of individual delusion or ideological extremism. A delicate balance is required to combat violence perpetrated in the name of a religion, an ideology or an economic system, while also safeguarding religious freedom, intellectual freedom and individual freedoms."
I fully expect Huckabee to tell us in a few days how Muslims are the only group to have Pope Francis' 'undying' support. You know, exactly like last time someone came out and spoke about how we're not immune and should be wary of our own extremism?

You know that you can turn that around though, right? The Pope had things to say that crossed political boundaries. Not that surprising really. And also not surprising that some of those will align with one parties platform, and some with the others. He has the luxury of speaking in ideal language, and not actually having to legislate. I happen to agree that in a perfect world we would have neither the death penalty nor abortion. We don't live in that world though.

I was chuckling more at the Republicans reaction during the speech than making a statement about the Pope's interest in human life.

And I was pointing out that the Democrats reactions were similarly mixed based on what he was saying. They were just as much cheering the parts that supported their ideological positions, and not doing so during the parts that didn't. So I'm not sure (other than partisan bashing) why you'd make such a point of singling out Republicans for this. The Dems did the same thing.

It's like trying to make fun of a group of fans because they cheer when their team scores a touchdown, but not when the other team scores. Um... The fans of the other team do the same thing, just in reverse, right? So it's kind of a non-statement.

EDIT: Oh. And just because it might be relevant. You are aware that a greater percentage of Democrats in Congress are Catholic than Republicans, right? So it's not like there's some assumption by the GOP that the Pope is "on their side", or that they should be cheering the Pope more than the Democrats. Maybe some liberals might think so, and might even make hay every time the GOP members didn't cheer something the Pope said, but that would be silly.

The Democrats started cheering halfway through a line and then realized what the Pope was actually saying? Huh. Ok, if you say so.

Seriously, it was just an amusing thing that happened. You don't have to fall all over yourself trying to make it "equal" just because it happened to some Republicans.

Republicans are the ones that loudly proclaim their faith, and any resistance is declared a war against faith. Being the vocal minority just makes it funnier.

Not that the Democrats don't have their share of creepy popephiles.

Latest and greatest from the kook fringe is that Pope Benedict was deposed by a cabal of radical leftist cardinals who wanted to modernize the Church by allowing gay marriage, abortion, etc. The source for this is a biography of some cardinal who says he and a handful of others were "opposed" to some of Benedict's views -- which somehow gets turned into deposing the Pope (and forcing him to resign no less!) and then instating Pope Francis... who is also opposed to gay marriage and abortion but, you know, baby steps.

It should be noted that (a) there is no mechanism for removing a sitting Pope*, whose power is absolute within the Church and (b) there are 118 cardinals who vote in the Papal Conclave so five or six of them not liking Benedict much is meaningless even if they did try to do anything about it.

Still, a good conspiracy theory that lets you to discard messages you don't like is a good conspiracy theory that lets you discard messages you don't like.

*Well, no legitimate mechanism. Dropping a safe on them probably still works.

I think "I don't agree with the direction the Church is going so we're going to leave the country" is a perfectly legitimate mechanism that should be used more often.

Traditionally, one creates an anti-pope. The USA is even lucky enough to have a coupler of places literally called Babylon within which to 'house' their chosen candidate.

If you declare an anti-pope, you can then either have him rule from an ecclesiastic enclave, or better yet, take Rome and force the abdication of the prior pope.

Do you want a protestant reformation? Because that's how you get a protestant reformation.

Lol! Yeah, because "opposed to gay marriage and abortion" are the likely reasons some cardinals might have disliked Benedict and wanted him to step down.
