It is not a defense. It is a perspective. It was not difficult for Snowden. How difficult do you think it would be for a nation-state with near endless resources? Not very is the correct answer.
As for the he "did for me" angle, you do realize that S tried to do the responsible thing and, well, media, apparently, were not that interested. The difference between S and Manning, Drake and countless others was that he saw what happened to them and opted to be prepared.
