High fiber and non-starchy vegetable. The best kind.

While were on that train of thought, a lot of the GOP's policies make more sense if you imagine them as the exhausted parents of multiple whiny kids.

I'm assuming that's why they do so well in suburbia.

Pretty much. Or at least they'll say the "other group" is, not those based hard-working Americans who supported them in the primary, of course. Smiley: rolleyes

This mindset explains why Gbaji constantly makes comparisons like "Homosexuals wanting to legally marry their life partner is like saying everyone should get an ice cream cone"

The SCotUS has declined a final, long shot, request for a stay on the Pennsylvania 2018 congressional district map. This map is much more favorable to Democrats than the previously map which so so egregiously gerrymandered that it was overturned by the state courts.

Um... I recall that Sinead O'connor was consistently called "skinhead O'Connor" back in the day. Can't speak to Grace Jones, of course. Her hairstyle predates the modern media association with the term and white racist though, so there's that.

But whatever, the dude who disparaged her for her looks and sexuality has now dropped out of the race rather than defend his statements.

And another victory for extreme political correctness! Yay! Don't you feel proud now?

Actually, I was originally just making a joke about it.

Sure you were. When people make jokes, they don't feel the need to run back and defend why their jokes were actually totally accurate semantic arguments Smiley: laugh

Some of us are able to dismiss one part of something with a joke and then talk about another part of it in another context that isn't a joke. I get that this is hard for others though.

Quote:
Look, if I was defending someone attacking a girl's hair and sexuality solely because he had the right letter after his name...

Not the reason I did it. I'd have said the exact same thing if he'd had a "D" after his name. I get that for you it would have been the other way around. But that's your own issue, and you're projecting that on me.

Quote:
I guess I would try to make up a lame "It was a joke" justification as well so I get where you're coming from. The difference is that I didn't do that, you did, and it speaks volumes of your character even as you now lay out the "Aren't YOU the real monster?" nonsense.

You said it. Just own it instead of crying about being called out on it.

I am owning it. What I find amusing is that if I drop it instantly, I'm labeled as "admitting fault", but if I state my disagreement with your bizarre interpretation, I'm somehow "not owning it". I'm totally owning the freaking joke I made. And yes, part of that joke is that technically the term he used is historically accurate. Again, I can't speak to his intent when he used it, but I seriously doubt he was trying to suggest that she's a member of some sort of white supremacist movement. So we're kinda left with "he was using it to make fun of her hairstyle". Which, while silly and stupid for its own reasons, isn't so for the ones you seem to be getting so emotional about.

And yes, I followed that up with a discussion of the merits of her statements. Which, predictably, you ignored for the red meat of "OMG! he called her a skinhead!!!". Seriously? That's the biggest thing you care about? Apparently so.

No doubt he'll come around to defend Trayon White, Sr's video about the Jews controlling the weather.

No. But if someone made fun of him by making a comment about his hairstyle and/or sexual orientation in addition to calling him a moonbat, I'd probably respond similarly to that person's statement, regardless of that person's political affiliation. And in just the same way, I'd shift immediately from a one liner about the comment to a longer discussion of the guys moonbat status.

See how that works? Totally consistent here. Not sure what you guys are talking about at all.

Is that even Government Cheese? Google says Homestyle is some old-person meal service. Not sure if this is actually EBT stuff. Also not sure if Trumps plan was implemented.

It's not, it's not. It's just a video of someone doing disgusting things with pre-packaged food, and used as though this has anything at all to do with Trump.

I'm somewhat on the fence regarding the idea of providing pre-packaged meals to families on SNAP. On the one hand, it could potentially save money since it would ensure that each family would be getting actual food with the funding. And it could even help with some of the obesity issue if done properly. On the other hand, it's even greater control of the government over the governed. I'm innately against the idea of the government deciding what you eat. Even if done for the best of intentions, and using the "best nutritional science available", we all know that the USDA has a long history of wild fluctuation in what is considered "healthy".

I'm firmly in the "let people make their own decisions, and let them be responsible for the consequences thereof". Of course, the problem with this is that about 50% of our population refuses to allow the second part, so we're somewhat forced to do something about the first part. On the flip-flip side, if we had the government directly controlling what people ate then it would actually be responsible for the health consequences, so there's that.

How about we just let people starve? Seems like a good way to go. For the Joph's out there, this is also a joke

Quote:
I remember my Aunt's refrigerator being full of large blocks of cheese and jugs of milk and cupboard with generic labelled "Peanut Butter" and crackers and what not. Something to do with a WIC program I believe (I was a kid at the time, I didn't pay too close attention). I don't recall it being that bad, and she seemed to like it.

Yeah. We don't know enough details about this to know how it might pan out. There are ways to do this sort of thing that wouldn't be too horrible (either in cost, or in quality, or even in the context of controlling what people eat). There are food programs out there right now that basically provide a "box of essentials" for families in need. I used to volunteer for one called SHARE here in San Diego (I think it's a nationwide program, and I couldn't tell you whether, or how much government funding they received to help run the program). The point is that you got a box (or several boxes depending on family size) that included a set of different things each month. Mostly canned and dried goods, but sufficient staples to be able to make a lot of meals, and certainly helped supplement whatever other sources of food one might have.

Replacing some of the direct dollars put into EBT cards with boxes of the same sort would probably work pretty well. It would certainly cost a lot less since the food in the boxes are wholesale. It's been a long time, but I recall that those boxes were freaking inexpensive for what you got. One of the major problems with the current process is that people tend to go on spending sprees at the beginning of the month, and yeah, don't often make good cost effective choices. Then they run out in the last week or so of the month, and the kids are subsisting on whatever is left over. Which often isn't that great.

Again though, I never underestimate the ability of the government to totally ***** up even a marginally good idea.

Did you look around to make sure that there were no poor people around before making the joke? (like racist "non-racists" that tell racist jokes only once they have ensured no black people are going to overhear them)

Lt Col Ralph Peters to Fox News wrote:
On March 1st, I informed Fox that I would not renew my contract. The purpose of this message to all of you is twofold:

First, I must thank each of you for the cooperation and support you've shown me over the years. Those working off-camera, the bookers and producers, don't often get the recognition you deserve, but I want you to know that I have always appreciated the challenges you face and the skill with which you master them.

Second, I feel compelled to explain why I have to leave. Four decades ago, I took an oath as a newly commissioned officer. I swore to "support and defend the Constitution," and that oath did not expire when I took off my uniform. Today, I feel that Fox News is assaulting our constitutional order and the rule of law, while fostering corrosive and unjustified paranoia among viewers. Over my decade with Fox, I long was proud of the association. Now I am ashamed.

In my view, Fox has degenerated from providing a legitimate and much-needed outlet for conservative voices to a mere propaganda machine for a destructive and ethically ruinous administration. When prime-time hosts—who have never served our country in any capacity—dismiss facts and empirical reality to launch profoundly dishonest assaults on the FBI, the Justice Department, the courts, the intelligence community (in which I served) and, not least, a model public servant and genuine war hero such as Robert Mueller—all the while scaremongering with lurid warnings of "deep-state" machinations— I cannot be part of the same organization, even at a remove. To me, Fox News is now wittingly harming our system of government for profit.

As a Russia analyst for many years, it also has appalled me that hosts who made their reputations as super-patriots and who, justifiably, savaged President Obama for his duplicitous folly with Putin, now advance Putin's agenda by making light of Russian penetration of our elections and the Trump campaign. Despite increasingly pathetic denials, it turns out that the "nothing-burger" has been covered with Russian dressing all along. And by the way: As an intelligence professional, I can tell you that the Steele dossier rings true—that's how the Russians do things.. The result is that we have an American president who is terrified of his counterpart in Moscow.

I do not apply the above criticisms in full to Fox Business, where numerous hosts retain a respect for facts and maintain a measure of integrity (nor is every host at Fox News a propaganda mouthpiece—some have shown courage). I have enjoyed and valued my relationship with Fox Business, and I will miss a number of hosts and staff members. You're the grown-ups.

Also, I deeply respect the hard-news reporters at Fox, who continue to do their best as talented professionals in a poisoned environment. These are some of the best men and women in the business..
So, to all of you: Thanks, and, as our president's favorite world leader would say, "Das vidanya."
