...hundred.

Sometime around 2006, my weight, which had always been high, finally crossed the 300lb threshold. Since then, it has fluctuated somewhere between 325 and 380. But last year, in May, I did a weigh in and it had gone up to 399, which obviously upset me. I refused to let 400+ be the new norm. So, from May 2017 to March 2018, I counted calories and watched what I ate. I saw some success, stabilizing within a few pounds of 361, which was the floor for months, never able to drop below it. And, it was very difficult. I found myself hungry most of the time.

Then, a couple weeks into Lent this year, I realized I'd forgotten to come up with something to give up. So, on a whim, I gave up sodas entirely. Which then turned into giving up sugar. And then wheat. Then corn. Then rice. And before I knew it, I was doing the Keto diet. I mean, I tried Atkins before, back even before 2006. But I felt like crap and made it three days before my inability to eat more broccoli that day caused me to give up. In hindsight, I had the Keto Flu and didn't have the information to know how to deal with it.

Well, I got past the new floor, losing almost 25lbs in a month(which probably 10 pounds of that was water weight, but it certainly helped morale). Since March, I've continued, and unlike counting Calories, it has been easy. I eat plenty. I'm rarely hungry, even though I've been combining Keto with Intermittent Fasting, going 16 or more hours between dinner and my next breakfast. And I love the food. I can see doing this forever, which hopefully means little chance of relapse.

Here's a pic of the scale at my parents' house, where I do my weekly weigh in. It's hard to read, but it's 297.0, which means I'm down 102lbs. At the rate I've been going, 2-3 months until I'm back at my high school weight in the neighborhood of 270-280. Then hopefully, on to my long time goal of 225 or so. And who knows, maybe even beyond. Smiley: grin

Congratulations. I always suggest that people with sedentary jobs take a few minutes every hour to knock out some pushups or situps to sneak in some calorie burning, so if that applies to you go for it.

Congratz!

I tried the counting calories thing a few years back but it drove me nuts..
What I found really had an impact was examining certain habits.. a little bit of soda here and a bit of candy there... There are so many random times that I would intake crap that I'd never thought about... Then things that became normalized.. like randomly eating a pint of ice cream...
I specifically stopped buying ANY junkfood during grocery shopping (wife hasn't..)
For sweet tooth I usually keep some sweetened almond milk in the fridge and just take a swig once in awhile...

I used to buy crap like candy bars during commuting.. stopped that..
Redbulls and crap like that I finally stopped (on the coffee wagon again)
I also used to buy like 2 entire sandwiches when eating during commute.. thinking back that sounds crazy.... Which means my brain has changed..

Suddenly people starting asking if I was OK because of losing weight.. to my surprise..

Sugar is the devil.

If you get giant skin flaps from losing too much weight be sure to use them to freak out younger relatives at family events, and maybe try windsurfing or hang gliding while you can get into the hobby for cheap.

IF is supposed to help with that(albeit very slowly), so I'm hoping I can avoid the necessity of spending about seven grand on cosmetic surgery. Smiley: eek

Well done! I've been going the opposite direction for about 8 months since I separated from the wife and am sitting around 240. Need to get more activity in and stop eating at restaurants but cooking for one sucks and my kitchen is tiny so cooking for the kids and I sucks as well..

Activity is something sorely lacking... because I'm so picky... I live in very good neighborhood and I've always considered it FAR less urban than.. "Main street" is like a mini-tourist attraction.. very quaint.. but There are NO 'real' Parks around here....

Everyplace I used to lived (closer to a city) there were at least wild undeveloped or abandoned places to walk to. explore.. Around here there are all of these sanitized PAVED 'parks'... I am such an idiot that I will let any little excuse to NOT go outside.... but seriously.. there is nowhere around here to just "take a walk" where there aren't cars whizzing buy or you're surrounded by houses..

Then if I want to drive to the actual state parks.. there is never anywhere to park and they are filled with drunk loud messy people and it just pisses me off...

I have recently been called 'curmudgeonly'.. lol

Yo, EVERYTHING is so full of sugar... it's terrible.. Bread.. BREAD is just AWFUL! But everything is wheat.. which essentially is sugar... Most of our food is nothing but space filler...

and to think the NORMAL thing ISN'T to "FEEL FULL".
I don't feel like I've sustained myself unless I "Feel Full".... this is a grave error in judgement... You are not supposed to feel full.... you are simply not supposed to feel weak and hungry....

Water is the key. Smiley: thumbsup If you really think about it how much actual WATER do you drink in a 24 hour period??
There was one weekend I thought about it and hadn't drank ANY water... just soda, coffee...
Sugar water... that what like 90% of the selections are in stores..

I also try to just narrow my 'vision' of taste... Things are between sugar and salt.. most of our food.. sugary or salty.... forget the nuances... they're not worth it.

Best of wishes to all!

Nope. Just down a quarter of my old weight is all. Still have a way to go.

I hear you on the tiny kitchen. Cooking for one isn't too bad for me, since I usually cook 2-3 days worth of meals at a time, which I guess is easier because I only eat once a day.

Water has never been a problem for me. Even when I was drinking 3-5 sodas a day(I know, terrible, right?), I would have a bare minimum of 4-5 16oz cups of water. Oddly enough, I've actually been drinking less water as I'm losing weight. Still quite a bit, but not the insane amount as I used to. My pee is still absolutely clear, though, which I've been told means I'm drinking too much. But I drink when I'm thirsty and call it good.

Also, apparently wheat spikes your blood sugar faster than pure sugar does.

There's a pretty significant difference between the unprocessed sugars in grains versus the stuff that's put in your C&H bag (or in your sodas, sweets, etc). But yeah, too much of anything is generally "bad".

This is probably the number 1 advice I'd give to anyone trying to lose weight. Took me a long time to realize it as well. You should eat until you are no longer hungry, not until you are full. If you eat until you feel full, you are almost certainly eating too much. I found myself realizing that, yeah, I *could* eat a second helping of whatever, but I didn't *need* to. That's when I stop.

Yup. Drinking plain old water instead of soda, juice, etc is a huge deal. Coffee and tea are much better in this regard, but water is still the best thing.

Grats on the weight loss. Keep up the good work!

You need to do something to correct that whole water-clear urine situation. Working on one part of yourself only to damage another is pretty counter intuitive.

I think you misunderstand. I've been drinking enough water for clear urine at 9/10ths of the times I take a whiz since at least middle school. It's not like I'm doing anything different that's suddenly caused my urine to be clear.

Refined wheat into white flour, sure. Whole grain wheat? Not likely. Also, sugar in and of itself isn't bad. Again, its refined sugar. Natural sugar in fruit and vegetables? Great.

https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/glycemic-index-and-glycemic-load-for-100-foods

Whole grain bread is at 75. Sucrose at 65. Also, fructose, the sugar in fruit, is pretty bad. It's not useful for the majority of the body and is metabolized in the liver using different processes than glucose(sucrose, of course, contains both). It's also more readily convertible to fat. What makes fruit less bad is that the sugar is generally accompanied by lots of fiber. But even then, it's not great. Most fruits and veggies we eat nowadays are much different than how nature intended them. As I understand it, most fruits were closer in sweetness to a carrot before man began selectively breeding them. Personally, I eat things like broccoli and other cruciferous veg in abundance, and occasionally have a small amount of berries for my fruit fix.

Sorry, I don't have time to confirm this, but I think this is the video I'm thinking about regarding fructose.

Now back to work for a meeting, then off to get a haircut. Yay.

I eat those too. Only, instead of bread, the outside is more cheese(mixed with a little bit of either almond and/or coconut flour). Basically this, but I wrap the dough around a stick of string cheese. Smiley: grin

I'd seriously recommend trying a more conventional diet built around vegetables/wholegrain/fruit with moderate amounts of lean protein / fatty acid filled stuff (salmon etc). For long-term health it's your cholesterol / BP which counts, a random high-fat diet may help you lose weight immediately but the type of calories matters as well.. ideally you want ******** of fibre and sparse amounts of other stuff to keep both BP/chol low. That said, anything that helps you lose weight in the short term is still good!

I would think shenanigans of any kind would be welcome around here.

I found this thread interesting as my son has been in a pretty similar place. He was over 300 pounds until both him and his wife did a month long reset thingy where they ate nothing with added sugar (or honey or maple syrup etc), no grains, no dairy - basically a restrictive paleo diet. They completed that about a month ago, but are still on a no sugar added diet. They both claim that the 'reset' was helpful and that our processed food and even many of our 'favorite recipes' are sickeningly sweet.

Admittedly, I carry some liability for his past eating habits.

Yeah, no. Sorry, but cholesterol is overblamed for heart disease. Inflammation is where the real problem is. And you can get quite a bit of that from what you're recommending. And my blood pressure has gone down to a high-normal since losing all that weight. Hoping it gets even better as I get closer to my ideal.

That's definitely something I've noticed since starting keto(currently doing an experiment with "zero carb" to see if it helps my long term stomach ailments). Things I used to love are ridiculously sweet. And I don't feel happy for having eaten them when I do cheat. A bit of berries, a homemade keto cheesecake or a Lily's Dark Chocolate Almond bar are plenty sweet for me when I need that sweet kick, and I guarantee you that I would have complained about them not being sweet enough back in the day.

About the only thing exempt from this is Dr. Pepper. Had one the other day and it was still good. Still not drinking them as a general rule, but it was a special occasion.

Also, as ridiculous as it is, I think I may be one of those people who actually has issues with gluten. When I drank that Dr. P, I also had a bun with my burger(felt silly going bunless while drinking a soda). And I REALLY paid for it for the next three days or so. Will bear further experimentation.

Edit: BTW, I'm currently plateaued somewhere in the neighborhood of 275. That's a big part of why I'm trying the "zero carb" thing.
