Wow, things really have changed. When I last played this game about two years ago, there had been YEARS of constant things that were sure to set you some gil if you were in a bind. Off the top of my head...
You could farm Beehive chips in N. Gustaberg or S. Gustaberg, then put them on the Bastok AH to make money off some Alchemists. Now I hear they've tied all the AH's together since I left, so if that's true, it's even easier.
I remember that you could go into ANY inn and buy waters dirt cheap. You could then take all the dark crystals you have, and some tea things you bought in Windy, and go to The K. Highlands for some easy gil. You farmed sheep, turning the skins into leather that sold remarkably quick on the Sandy AH. You could also farm bees in the Highlands while running around killing sheep.
Anyhow, you used to be able to keep yourself afloat just fine, all you needed to do was look up some farming tips on this site, or even google.
