hey me too. WELCOME!!! my IGN is Angelleigh I used to play on Unicorn about 3 years ago ish and decided to come back to find it closed down *sigh* so I contacted a few ex memembers of my old ls and they reccomended fenrir, so far I have found no one helpful at all. Dont think they like noobs much. I hope you have more luck than me.... here's hoping things change :)
Back in my day, there were once a number of entire linkshells made with the purpose of helping noobs become self-sustainable players. I was in about... three shells that had this purpose, and all for the sake of helping others. I've noticed Orn and Alliam both posting in this thread, and I can personally say that I know those two have both paid their dues as members of helping shells.
A lot of them die out because of the membership not sustaining the shell, leeches, and helping players burning out. Players hit their high levels, then put their help shell on the back burner in favor of endgame. Many never even kept themselves around long enough to help other new players. Sometimes they'd pop back in their help shell for ten minutes a week if you were lucky enough to see them at all, and if you asked them about helping, you got a load of bull in return about how much they help the shell (in their ten minutes a week of popping in to say hello), and how they have endgame that night. Some of these players never even put their help shell linkpearl on again, and just thought that stopping into the shell's online forum was enough. When helping shells depend on giving high level help, it sucks to see your high levels leave.
On top of that you had needy players, with no initiative of their own, getting into the help shells. Players in help shells are always first instructed on where to find good research on the internet. This still never erased the insane amount of players who still refused to look anything up. You'd have to hold their hand for everything from crafting to farming to quests and missions they were way over level for. Usually this was acceptable at first (like up through the subjob quest), but when you had players hitting level 60, and still leeching off of other shell mates, you realized that these players would never be able to help others when they can't even help themselves.
All this eventually burnt out a lot of contributing members to help shells. Eventually, some of these players wanted to continue on themselves, and closed their linkshell's doors in favor of a long overdue, and well deserved move forward. So Fenrir isn't a place where noobs are hated, you just missed the train on the days when help shells were always around and easy to find. I bet you they're are still a few out there. Just don't be one of those "use em', abuse em', and leave em'" guys, and you can make sure there's a help shell for future noobs too.
