So this is a somewhat well known series of books by Terry Goodkind.
I myself have not partaken as of yet, but as I'm running low on fiction to read I'd like to get a few reviews of the series from those who have read them.

If you liked the books, you might be like me and shut it off half way through the first episode. Take Sword of Truth concept and Xena/Hercules camp and mix em together. It does not sit well with me at all, even the author refuses to acknowledge it.
As for the Books I'm a big fan the first few books are great, gets a bit slow/rant-y in the middle and ends on a bang. Terry Goodkind is a bit long winded sometimes but paints a vivid world that is easy to get lost in. In other news There's a new book coming out (its a prequel) about the first confessor, on July 2nd.
Do you enjoy one of the main characters of a novel getting kidnapped and losing their memory while the other tries to save him/her? If so, you'll LOVE these books. All 13 of them.

I've read the first 7 or 8 and it was pretty good. Yeah, there are 13 books so far, and I don't know if that includes the postquel (???) that doesn't even take place in the world Goodkind created and is only loosely tied to the story.
The TV show was called "Legend of the Seeker" and was a load of tripe. Don't bother with it unless you have a nice brooch to claw your eyes out with.

Basically, he's a hack. Technically poor, boring plot, detestable characters. Too up itself to serve as enjoyable pulp.
If you're looking for fantasy with some kind of creativity or intelligence behind it, I'd recommend Swanwick, Nicholson and Mieville. Assuming you haven't read at least one of them, which seems fairly likely, that should do you for a while.

The books can get a bit lengthy due to the author describing environments in great detail, but "detestable characters" is news to me. I liked the main characters and loved a certain female character in skintight leather. 
The TV show is ridiculous, though. It's a Disney production of a very much adult story.

Also on the Storyline (tv show): I give it an F...for 'stay the @#%^ away if you like the books'.
Have you read Wheel of Time? I find a lot of similarities in both series (as far as underlying themes in parts). Both are great, and well worth the time to read them.
I rest my case.

Honestly I always pictured him more like Christopher Lloyd, aka Doc Brown from Back to the Future.
