Yup, that was Extremis Iron Man. He couldn't beat the extremis guys, so he became one. It was after Secret Invasion he "rebooted" himself so Norman Osbourne, as new director of SHIELD, couldn't get his hands on his data.

This is totally why I stopped collecting comics. Right there.

The Invincible Iron Man run, that began with Extremis, was actually pretty good. But I'm a sucker for Warren Ellis' sci-fi stuff (Planetary is probably my favorite series of all time, Transmetropolitan is a fantastic sci-fi/gonzo journalism mashup, and his work on The Authority is a must-read).

The whole needing to reboot himself after the events of Secret Invasion, while admittedly lame, was karma for Tony being such a douche during Civil War.

I stopped reading comics because it got too expensive trying to keep track of what was going on. To read book A, you need to have read book B, which in turn needs a book C. That isn't even counting events like Maximum Carnage. Made worse when the stories weren't even worth the damn cost.

For me, it was a bit of both (a lot of both really). The cost of following so many stories, when it was really clear that the entire reason for them doing so many crossovers was to force people to buy more books and there wasn't any real benefit story wise. But also when they started seriously ******** with characters was my cue to get out. What had always made Marvel better than DC in my mind was the consistency of their characters. I mean, they changed over time, but they were generally gradual and story based. Also, they interacted with each other in a single well defined and maintained universe.

Somewhere along the line Marvel decided to start spinning off different characters into multiple different timelines and alternate story lines (I assume also to require you to buy yet more books). So it was like "hey! Let's retell the story of Spider Man, but with him being female, or a robot, or whatever. It'll be so cool!). It really wasn't though. The did a whole series of alternate future characters, and most of them sucked. Those that were cool, kinda weren't anyway because there wasn't enough of the world they were being told in to make it feel big and real. Marvel "solved" this problem by then having these one-shot alternate versions start popping up in their "real" universe.

That's when they jumped the shark IMO. They were more interested in randomly experimenting with the characters and consistency was thrown out the window. They went from a universe where everything kinda had to be approved and no big changes could be made without making sure it wouldn't break anything else in the larger universe to one where "anything goes, cause we don't care about continuity anymore". The irony is that Marvel started doing this literally right after DC spent an enormous amount of time and effort undoing their franchise from one that followed that "random crap all over the place" model to one in which there was one tight and consistent world.

For readers who enjoyed Marvel because their universe told a bigger story, it destroyed all interest in their franchise.

I thought Marvel was doing a pretty good job with most of their books, outside of the X-Men which became quite a mess over this time, from Avengers Disassembled right up through the end of Siege. Spidey was going along well until One More Day, and even though the post One More Day stories were pretty good, I had a hard time hand waving away Peter's Marriage. I was not following the book when Doc Ock took over Peter's body, but I dislike the idea.

Ultimate Spider-Man has pretty much always been good & the Ultimates mostly good (I really like the idea of Mr. Fantastic as a villain - see Planetary if you want an even better version of this). The cost of my wedding is what stopped me from going to the comic shop on Wednesdays, but I still pick up the trades of The Walking Dead, Invincible, Saga, Kick-***, & the occasional Marvel book.

Dan Slott did a pretty good job dealing with Spidey after that whole One More Day debacle, and even the whole Spider-Ock stuff isn't exactly horrible, though there are somethings that quickly got under my skin. As far as jumping the shark ... well, these are stories involving people who shoot lasers out of their eyes and juggle locomotives. Sharks been jumped a long time ago.

The need to constantly produce new content has ruined comics for me.

I sometimes look over the comics when I'm at the bookstore, but it's very rare that the plot makes any sense to me. It's usually some alternate timeline and/or time travel plot with cross-franchise shenanigans going on.

I just want to say that I've finally got a device that's letting me catch up on my reading, and I'm just about caught up with Iron Man (Since he's the target of the jumping shark comments, as it were)

So the Mandarin is now less a single entity (for the time being, of course) but a Planeteers / Green Lantern Corp knock off. Sharks gone orbital.

Actually, my comments were more directed at creating alternate timeline versions of characters and then finding contrived ways to have them appear in the "main" timeline. Doing so every once in awhile is a neato "what if" kind of thing. Doing so with every major character (and a bunch of minor ones) in some cases multiple times? Not so much.

Oh. And my "that's why I quit" comment wasn't actually directed at Iron man, so much as Norman Osbourne being director of SHIELD. Cause you can just only take so much of that sort of thing.

Norman as the head of the global secret police wasn't nearly as bad as Teenage Tony Stark or the hamfisted way they brought Samual L Jackson Fury into 616.

That's.... terrible! Smiley: eek The one from the Ultimates or another version? Not that it would be any less embarassing either way, I'm just curious.
Did they replace the 'original' Fury or do they now have both?

Maybe it's really a good thing I stopped reading Marvel a few years back.

I caught up on (new) Guardians of the Galaxy, via comixology. 1st off: it was kind of expensive. The 6 GoG "collections" weren't super-duper pricey, but when you add in Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest, War of Kings, Thanos Imperitive, & Infinity it got pricey.

2nd off: I don't have too much to go off (Man with the Iron Fist is actually all I know him in besides being a "Wrastler"), but Bautista has a LONG way to go if they're going to do Drax any sort of justice. While I think Bautista looks pretty good as Drax, I dunno if he can handle the gravitas that I would like the Destroyer to have.

Also, I would very much like Zoe Seldana to wear Gamora's comic book outfit. SHA-WING!

Huh, the Avengemon clip got taken down ... oh well.

New trailer of a trailer. Apparently that's a thing now. Trailers for trailers.

I hope Groot talks on Monday.

There was a Q&A session prior to the release of the trailer. It blew the hell up. I really liked Gunn's, Bautista's, and even Diesel's answers to some of the questions. Looks like it's going to be a ridiculous 80s Sci Fi action flick. I mean, moreso than from the first trailer.

Dat Knowhere and dat "I am Groot."
One ticket for the Hypetrain. All aboard.

Apparently the first video blew up, too. So here's a copy.

"There was a day when the cast and James played a prank on me," Bautista said. "James made the whole cast and crew (about 200 people) have a dance off for his own amusement. Everyone was in on it but me -- they called me to the set, Chris pointed at me, and I got pulled into the middle. The set turned into a rave!"

"That's true," Gunn continued. "Star-Lord was offering a dance off to Ronan, who has a stick up his butt in the movie. But instead we got Lee [Pace] to start dancing in his bulky costume - he was really good. And we told Zoe [Saldana] ahead of time as well and she was doing a nice sexy Zoe dance. And then Chris pointed to Dave, who, despite his surprise, took it like a champ. He grabbed his ankle and started dancing around on one leg. We have it all on film!!! I'm sure everyone will be able to see this on the Blu-ray. All 200 extras started dancing as well. Forgot about them."
I am preordering this Blu-Ray.

Time will tell I suppose, but the trailers all make this look amazingly fun.

It'll be interesting too because this the first of the big Marvel movies where I know almost nothing about the source material going in.
