Another season & a new Doctor started last night. Just like with previous regenerations, I was sad to see the previous Doctor go & apprehensive about the new one, but Capaldi pretty much nailed it. Hell, Clara even seem to actually have a personality. The first part of the episode seemed a little week, but it got better as it went on.

Its interesting, as the episode featured the villains from the amazing "girl in the fireplace" from Tennants era, with an interesting ending (Did he push him, or did he jump?).

There was also a cameo at the end that I wasn't expecting & what looks like a new (or maybe old?) villain who looks like this seasons big bad. The 50th anniversary episode aside, it looks like this'll be a much stronger season than lasts and I'm fully on board with Capaldi as "12".

I liked the episode.

They really seem to be pushing the psychological part of the regeneration this time. Smith's doctor went through it relatively quickly, behind the scenes, in the Tardis while Amy was waiting.

I really liked the episode. Capaldi looks like he's going to play it very differently from Smith and I think that's a good thing. Not that Smith was bad, I really liked him, but it's definitely time for a change up and it seems like Capaldi can deliver.

I didn't hate it. Capaldi's take on the Doctor is a bit more to my taste than Smith's was. I'm looking forward to this season. I am getting a bit tired of lizard woman though. She's painfully uninteresting and pretty much kills any scene she's in.

I did enjoy her wife, Jenny's, outfit when she was supposed to be painting her. Uncharacteristically sexy. Probably the cleavage.

I, too, enjoyed that outfit. As for Capaldi, he'll take some getting used to (as did Tennant and Smith before him) but I do think I'll like him. The episode itself was good, not great, but regardless I'm excited to actually be watching DW as it airs for the first time ever! Of course, we don't have a subscription with BBC America so I had to procure the episode elsewhere... and the episode kept freezing >_<. Had to quit watching halfway through to find another version Smiley: frown.

Alright, who else had something in their eye when Smith's "11" made that phone call?

Personally I thought that part was really stupid. Did we really need Matt Smith begging us to give the new guy a chance?

Considering the general opinion on Matt Smith when David Tenant left, yes.

That's a little different. Like him or not, Tennant put on such a powerful performance that he was pretty much an impossible act to follow. Smith, while a very good Doctor, didn't have the same sort of presence Tennant did. Capaldi might take a few episodes to get used to but he probably won't suffer from the 'new guy' thing nearly as long as Smith did.

I think the only reason Tennant had such a following was because he was the only Doctor most of the current fans had ever known. He was the Doctor. Chris only had one season, right? Tennant was just in the right place at the right time, pretty much.

I enjoyed Tennant and Matt pretty much the same. Found the part with Matt at the end of the season premiere to be moan worthy. I think the scene could have played out better had Clara and the new doctor used the time to connect directly rather than through his past self telling her to.

I found Tennant's last line in the Day of the Doctor to be equally moan worthy. His "I don't wanna go". Things like that just don't appeal to me.

Also, one thing that seemed odd to me looking back at it. Clara is a different companion. She's not just linked to Matt's Doctor. She's linked to them all. She went back through time there for a bit, appearing in every Doctor's time line. Seems strange that they'd have to work so hard to make her come to terms with the new doctor.

That's definitely part of it but it's not the only thing, or even the biggest thing. Smith took years to come into his own and stop being "that guy who replaced Tennant." Not because he's a bad actor or a bad Doctor, far from it. It's just that Tennant put on such an insanely strong performance that anyone would have had a hard time being taken seriously after that. Even if he's not your favorite Doctor there's no denying that Tennant had a... presence, that neither Eccleston nor Smith were able to match.

Mostly opinion, from those fans mentioned earlier. And I think it all boils down to those same fans. I'd imagine if Matt Smith had been in Tennant's place and Tennant in Matt's, the same thing would have happened (roles reversed, of course). I really don't think it was the actor, just the time and place. I think Matt was a solid enough actor that he would have had the same presence as Tennant.

I think the material had a lot to do with it too. Eccelstein had a couple of really good, powerful episodes, & a few groan worthy ones, but he really wasn't around long enough to establish himself as THE Doctor. Tennant certainly had the time, had some great episodes, but also had a lot of rather bad ones. He wasn't bad in them, mind you, but the episodes themselves were bad.

Smith had one bad season & that, unfortunately, was the latter half of his last full season. Ya, I loved the 50th, but most of the 7th season wasn't very strong (Nor was Clara as a character, for that matter). I was certainly apprehensive when Smith took over, but he became THE Doctor rather quickly and was lovably, adorably, weird through.

In short; Eccelstein was the badass Doctor in a leather jacket still mad about the time war, Tennant was the dashing Doctor that wore suits and sneakers and sucked at keeping companions, Smith was the boy-ish weirdo who lost his best friends out of ******* nowhere, & Capaldi seems to be bringing back some bad *** seriousness with a little bit more alien than the last 3.

Exactly!

She knows the doctor changes, has seen them all, so why on earth does this new change bother her so much?

Capaldi might work out well, it's too early to say. A bit of a shame that they created a pretty dark character for him, just to throw it all away at the end of the episode. Storywise, I found this first episode to be pretty bad. A bit all over the place with some really stupid attempts at physical comedy (they could have added the Benny Hill soundtrack to some scenes) that were way over the top.

It did improve halfway through the episode, when they finally got some focus.

A T-rex? Really? The Tardis fits in a T-rex's mouth? And then they only use the creature to show that this new doctor can speak Dinosaur? What the heck were they thinking?

Clara Oswald. F-ing with time. All the time, every time.

I really liked this episode. I'm normally not a fan of the 'monsters in the dark' type episodes but this one was really good. His whole wondering about 'perfect hiding' seemed a bit odd though. I mean, didn't we already do the whole Silence thing?

Also, weren't they already at the end of time once before in that Tennant episode where The Master first reappeared?

Technically the Silence were not hiding, you just couldn't remember that they were there.

That Robin hood episode was jacked up, most specifically the ending was incredibly jacked up. Just why.

This episode was really where Capaldi became "The Doctor" for me. He really seemed to be an amalgam of Smith & previous Doctors before this, but he really took it to the next level here. Best episode of the new season yet, even with Clara mucking around with the Doctor's past again.

The finale always approaches too quickly.
First half was today.
Seems a lot of this was expected. Missy = Mistress = He's Back.

I wonder if they are going to go all Roman Rory with Mr. Pink now? I don't imagine them letting him remain actually dead.

3W. Don't Cremate Me. That was a good part, but the end of the episode kind of ruined it because now it's not true...

Either that or Mr. Pink will become a Cyberman.

Overall I liked the episode, but since I knew it was the Cybermen due to the trailer it kind of ruined that reveal for me. Missy being the Master was kind of the obvious choice, but I'm not exactly disappointed that was the reveal. The emotional stuff between The Doctor, Clara, & Mr. Pink was the strongest part of this episode especially when you take the rest of the season into account.

It stinks, but by the end of this episode I was disappointed with the other reveals by comparison to the emotional stuffs.

Ya, the previews ruined the reveal of the episode baddy. That appears to happen a lot with shows these days, trailers and previews tend to show almost too much.

So the christmas special was fun. Predictable by the end, but still a good episode. It's nice to see everyone happy.

Pink's still dead though. I thought they'd use this as a way to Rory him back to life.

I would have thought the ending would have been more emotional if Clara stayed old, but apparently she decided to stay on for another season kind of last minute hence the tacked on happy ending.

I watched a bit of the Who marathons while on vacay last week & I must say I really miss the fun of the Eccelstein/Tennant/Smith Doctors, but still love grumpy Capaldi.
