You can name all of the great video game companies.

You can do the above in less than 10 seconds.

You know what Contra is.

You've ever played Contra.

You've used the Contra code to beat Contra.

-As mentioned, calling in sick / applying urgent leave to play FF. That cost me my last job (kinda) >_>

-Cancelling | postponing | being late for get-togethers with friends, colleagues etc. so that you can camp that elusive HNM, Morbolger and the like.

-Gloating (using emotes such as /grin, /dance and the like) when you manage to buy up all the elm logs within 5 seconds of the shop opening every game day.

-when meeting up with friends who play FF too, you discuss nothing else but FF, for example: ranting about those "JP ONRY" players, jinxed synthesis failure rates and how laggy Lower Jeuno is.

-replaying every version of FF7 out there in the hope that Aeris (or Aerith) can somehow be revived.

-45 minutes after you were supposed to buy dinner, you are still playing.. "One more turn!"

-And you know which game "One more turn!" comes from ;)

I saw in one of the posts saying "if you think Nobuo Uematsu is a genius" (no idea how to make quote boxes) and I completely disagree with that. I plan on majoring in musical composition and performance, and if you actually listen closely to his works, he IS a genius. Thinking he is a genius has nothing to do with being a nerd, and if you know anything about music you'll most likely respect his work, if not like it.

couldnt agree more. Nobuo Uematsu for me is one of the greatest musical scorers in gaming. i've been a fan since FF4. how he comes up with the melody and harmonies just amazes me.

good look to you visien on your plan on majoring in musical composition. one of the hardest in the field. (avante garde? no thanks. >.<;;) its not as easy as it sounds but its well worth it.

cheers!

he's not a compositional genius >_>. just because he can put some pretty chords together and make them work in a compositional sense, does not make one a genius. kLutz (freelance composer, rearranges FF music and the like) is similar, and do you consider him a genius?

what about lunar? that game had amazing music. anyone think the composer was a genius? who can even remember his name?

------I'm a composition major at Berklee in Boston... and I find that quote to be pretty ignorant. While I do agree that Nobuo is not a "genius" but he is definitely a master composer. Putting "pretty chords together" for 100+ piece orchestras take months of work. Lets not even talk about editing, re-scoring, making additional parts, new arrangements for different setups etc........ The man is one of the worlds best. Try to take into consideration how much he has actually contributed to the society of music just from Final Fantasy. If you're scoring for a major film or game, post production takes HOURS and HOURS of sleepless nights....well now I'm just repeating myself. Anyways you get the idea.

well, putting those chords altogether to make compositional sense is talent. orchestrating it and doing it for, lets say even a 24 piece group is a feat. now being highly acclaimed by your peers all over because of that composition, well that is one helluva an achievment.

i consider myself ecclectic and enjoy almost every kind of music. now being a musician takes my listening in a somewhat more analytical sense. i tend to notice modulations, shifts from major to minor feel, combinations in harmony and weavings of modes. and from what i hear from his compositions and how he did those things to his compositions, well, it just blows me away. i may not consider Nobuo Uematsu as pure genius in every sense but i consider him as one of the greatest composers of our time.

but it always boils down this: to each his own. everyone has their own preference and tastes when it comes to music. you hate him maybe because his style doesnt appeal to you. again, to each his own.

um no, i never said i hate him because of his style. i hate him because he shifted to some lame techno in advent children. he essentially sold himself out. i'm not saying he sucks, i agree he is a good composer. true genius is the likes of mozart. and i'm not really pulling much of this out of my rear, as i've been a musician as well for roughly 3-4 years, and i've noticed a lot of music tends to follow the same patterns in terms of key shifts, progessions and the like

i think its some sort of trend or thing in japan. most of the musicians and music lovers there are really into either electronica or progressive rock. i guess that's why he did it.

you also said "you've BEEN a musician for roughly 3-4 years". you stopped being one or delved into something else?

cheers! ^^
