Final Fantasy XIV Collector's Edition Preview

Square Enix releases details about their Collector's Edition of Final Fantasy XIV!

Square Enix, set to release their highly anticipated next generation MMO Final Fantasy in just a little over a month to customers of the Collector's Edition, has released images and details on the two different editions. In addition, they've provided details on how they plan to entice current Final Fantasy XI adventurers to venture into their new fantasy world of Eorzea.

Discuss this on the ZAM forums.

The Collector's Edition (box art seen below) will be released on September 22, 2010, eight whole days before the release of the Standard Edition, allowing the "early birds" to have a whole week of fun before everyone else. The Collector's Edition is currently priced at $74.99.

The Standard Edition of Final Fantasy XIV (box cover below), priced at a lower retail of $49.99, will allow players to begin playing in Eorzea on September 30, 2010.

A bonus that customers of the Collector's Edition can look forward to is a Right of Passage Document that details your character's name, race, clan, birthdate, and gender, issued by your starting city.

This document will be mailed to you, presumably after the creation of your first character.

A particularly interesting inclusion is a travel journal, which includes never-before-seen concept art.

One can see this as a valuable item to have for Disciples of the Hand!

An authenticator, which features a new Final Fantasy XIV design, will also be included with the Collector's Edition, heightening account security.

Adventurers coming from Vana'diel will be interested in hearing about what bonuses are in store for them if they decide to subscribe to both games.

Reduced Monthly Fee

XI and XIV Developer Hiromichi Tanaka had previously hinted at a reduction in the monthly fee of Final Fantasy XI and ZAM has since learned that current XI subscribers will receive a $5.95 base discount when both XI and XIV are registered to the same Square Enix Account. This discount will not apply during a free trial of either games and will only be offered to subscribers who pay by credit card. The discount will only be applied to one XI account per XIV account.

Users debating playing both games will only have until January 2011 to take advantage of the discount. If you do, your base fee for Final Fantasy XI would only be $7.00 versus $12.95!

Bonus XIV In-Game Item

A second bonus available to subscribers of both games is a special in-game item called Hermes Shoes.

Described as, "Named after an elder god, all but forgotten in the modern age, these gold-tipped shoes have been crafted with the lightest of leathers, making them optimal for use by heralds and noterunners.”, the Hermes Shoes will be available in your inventory at the start of the game, provided that you have an active XI account linked before your character is created and you must have a valid Content ID registered. The account cannot be in a free trial period.

Transfer Your Vana'diel Character Name

A third bonus to players of both worlds is the chance to transfer your character name over to Eorzea. However, due to restrictions on this feature, it's hard to envision many players taking advantage of this bonus.

Transfers will not be applicable with the following instances:

  • If the FINAL FANTASY XIV playable character is created before an active FINAL FANTASY XI account is linked
  • If, at the time that the FINAL FANTASY XIV character is created, the Content ID on the linked FINAL FANTASY XI is invalid or has been cancelled
  • If the linked FINAL FANTASY XI account is within the free trial period
  • If no FINAL FANTASY XI character exists on the linked FINAL FANTASY XI account

Character names may take up to 24 hours to be available and will automatically take on the character's Vana'diel server name as their surname.

Example:

  • FINAL FANTASY XI Player Character Name: Mikhalia
  • FINAL FANTASY XI World Name: Carbuncle
  • The resulting FINAL FANTASY XIV character name: Mikhalia Carbuncle

With a potential 24-hour wait on this bonus and the inability to choose your own surname, one would think that players would just as soon simply create the character with the name and surname of their choice immediately.

Update: Bonuses for the PlayStation 3 version will be announced at a later time.

so what they're saying is i have to link my xiv char with my xi char, in other words i can't play both xi and xiv at the same time? Because i was planning on xiv being something i can play on my downtime in xi like when seeking for party or going afk for certain events, if not that sucks, because it will be almost impossible to find time to literally switch between both games

I'm more excited about the token lighting up than the game. Current non-illuminating one is a pain in the ***.

So since I'm waiting for PS3 release am I gonna get shafted out of this discount?
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 17 2010 at 11:41 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The $5 discount sure isn't much to talk about. I pay 20 bucks a month for FFXI with my mules (which I'm forced to have due to many 75+ jobs and FFXI's limited inventory system) and if I want to have even 3 characters on FFXIV it will end up costing about 20 per month. To think, off of about 40something dollars a month I'll only get a 5 dollar discount for subscribing to both games and having been a loyal customer for 6 years.
What a disappointment.

But of course, they get to inconvenience us in some way, as always. We have to change our payment method to a credit card?! My 6 year, verified visa debit card isn't good enough for them to get these bonuses? No, I have to switch to a damn credit card now.

@#%^ you Square Enix. You never learn do you?

I am pretty sure that a visa debit card can be used as a credit card.
What a disappointment.

It says "Subscribers who pay by credit card" not debit card or checking account card. I think it truly means you have to have a credit card. This upsets me to a end so far that it's about to push me over the line to not want to give Square Enix another one of my hard earned dimes ever again. They ***** with people left and right, they did it in FFXI for so many years then tried to start "correcting" things when it was too late, then instead of making FFXI better they come out with a all NEW game, and before you know it they're ******** with people again.

They falsely banned people for goodness knows how long, thankfully I wasn't one of them. They made everyone change their payment methods, loyal customers for years, to these new "Verified" cards, which finally I got one set up, and now, to get the discount and the in game bonus I have to jump through MORE hoops for them and use a credit card for payment?

I hope you're right, but sadly it does specifically state that it must be a credit card. If this is the case I might just take a break from the final fantasy universe for awhile. Tired of jumping through hoops for a company. I guess in Japan the motto must be "The company is always right".
What a disappointment.

I wasn't there for there for the wrongful bannings. The "verified" cards, are those the ones with the 3 digits on the back of the card that you have to enter on some websites online when you purchase something?

I hope I'm right too. As far as I know with the visa debit cards, they work like a regular credit card. The only difference it doesn't come out of a credit account but rather your regular account. You just click credit and fill out the forms using the information on that card.

Because I know you can use them as a credit card at stores with eftpos pinpads.
What a disappointment.

I sure hope you're right about that as well. I have credit cards I'm trying to pay off from my past and cannot get another one at the moment. I'm using my checking account with my verified by visa card that was a pain to get, which I was FORCED to get for Square Enix after subscribing for 6 years to continue my FFXI subscription. If they truly force people to use a credit card, with verified, what next? They tell you what KIND of credit card you have to have? What the limit on it has to be? What your credit score must be to play the game? I'm done jumping through hoops for them. If my card doesn't work for this then I'll take my business elsewhere. I've put up with their crap for long enough.

As far as the verified thing goes, certain Credit Cards and Debit Cards (not all of them either) have a specific system you can register them to online, think of a "real life" square enix account management type of thing. It's a pain to set up to and a lot of people's banks and credit cards don't support it. Square Enix pretty much forced everyone to get one to continue subscribing to FFXI years after they had been paying by other methods.
Hermes Shoes worth it?

Anyone that is playing the beta that might be able to comment on whether these shoes are worth the cost of starting up FFXI again? It seems like I would use them for a bit and then dump them for something better...
Maybe

It looks to me like they mean if you register XI and XIV together before January 2011, you'll get the discount. If you wait, you won't get the discount. It makes sense, as they'll want XI players to buy XIV as soon as possible.
meh 2

Pretty much this. They have already said they feel that FFXI has "reached it's time"

Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

Ugh, I don't want to reactivate just to get a bonus in XIV. ***** that.

What's with dropping the discount to keep XI and XIV active together after January 2011? lol Are they trying to phase the game out?

I just think its just a way for you them to make more money if they put a time limit on it.
