good stuff dark pluto^^

from day one i have realized that i would have to learn alittle japanese to get by. it helps when your a low level in the dunes and can ask in english and romanji. from my point of view on sylph server we co-exist really well, not really a problem bcs atleast one person in a pt knows alittle romanji. Anyways if your too stubborn to learn any form of japanese than use the auto-translator function.

really, we are all people outside of the game but inside we are nothing more than 0s and 1s.

I love how us Americans can be so full of ourselves.

An earlier comment about JP players:

Why don't they try to learn some English to play with us?

Why shoould they learn our language to play with us? IT CAME OUT IN JAPAN FIRST! If anything, we should be the respectful ones and learn some Japanese to play with them.

This whole situation reminds me of the pizza place down the street: Gumby's Pizza. They have the best pizza and best prices of any delivering pizza place around. Their service, on the other hand, is awful. They are rude on the phone, their drivers are rude, and if you have a cold pizza or another problem, tough. The bottom line for Gumby's is, I still go there because they have the best product, and I don't really care how bad the service is. Likewise, I'm still going to play FFXI because I think it's the best.

Don't blame SE for this, because the market determines what standards they have to meet. We have all, as customers, made a decision by continuing to play FFXI that it's worth the downtime to us to play this great game.

One thing that most of you guys aren't giving any credit to is the fact that when SE has some kind of bug they fix it within a day usually, and their bug fixes don't make more problems for the players. I guess none of you guys have played EverQuest. SCEA used to patch things multiple times, fixing one thing and breaking another. I think the FFXI coders have been doing a wonderful job and should be commended. And to the IT guy who commented on server up time, I doubt you are writing and implementing your own server software. If you were you would probably have a little bit less than 99-100% up time too. =P

Actually I do write my own server software and maintain my own hosting datacenters in 3 different states. Which is exactly why I feel I'm qualified to comment on the technical aspects of this situation. While I'm sure that SE's hardware portfolio dwarfs mine, my original post still rings true.
you think this is bad?
# Sep 14 2004 at 7:48 PM Rating: Decent
Just wait until the expansion comes out... Expect the servers to come down every day for about a week till they get the bugs worked out. After that you'll only see downtime every other day or what not.

Good luck if you think this is bad.

Being a MMO or whatever, having a business that revovles around ppl all over the world is hard. But, if your going to have to throw everyone offline, still collect their money, then *****-up what you were supposed to do...that's where i feel SE screwed this update. Yesterday was completely understandable. Today, it's outrageous. There's no reason all the server's had to be down this long (if at all) with the proper planning.

I just wanna say that I am thrilled that we have a new country joining in our struggles in Vana'diel. I have notice a lot of talk back and forth about the language barrier with JP players. I haven't had all that great of experiences playing with JP ppl, but I like a lot of flare in my battles and parties and the lack of flow of communication has been the culprit. BUT, don't get me wrong, I have had the pleasure of watching a JP pty in the flow of intense battle, and I have to say that it was poetry in motion. Most those guys kick a$$, but every nation/sex/race has their a$$holes... such is life.. But anyway, sombody plz correct me if I"m wrong, but I thought that a lot of the Euro areas can speak better (if broken) English. Or maybe I put a bit too much faith in the Travel Channel.. lol

Babbling on.... Anywaz, I Welcom thee, Euro playerz, I kinda like helpin the noobs a bit, but don't get me on a rant about noobs... May start a whole new argument in here.. just stichk with ******** about the maintence going on.. lol

I know this is going to sound like just another whiny NA post, but I don't see the server downtime as acceptable by any means. My complaint is not based on why updates are geared towards the JP's instead of NA's or anything so trivial as that. My main concern is that SE's servers are constantly going down for updates.

Having a decent background in multi-tiered networking, I am well aware of how far us network engineers will go to keep servers online during an update. From my experience, you can keep servers online through 90% of upgrades with sufficient planning. The planning, I believe, is where SE falls short.

If you look at most multi-national companies, and their IT infrastructure, they usually have a policy of ZERO downtime. I don't believe SE should be exempt from these standards. Especially given that fact that they are a pay service. You should hear the complaints I get when only 1 or 2 of my servers is down. I could not even imagine what it would be like if all 25 went down. And I'm sure I only have a fraction of SE's hardware.

I'm not complaining that I can't play. I'm complaining that I can't use what I pay for, way too often.

That being said, I believe SE has done an AMAZING job in regards to actual gameplay and they should definitely be commended for it. I just hope one day that their attitude towards creative game programming would extend into keeping the game available for their users.

I'm sorry I work in the IT Dept in biggest corp in the world and if I EVER went into an ops meeting and told people we were going to lose 16 hours in the Pac Rim in the next 2 days the laughter would be deafening. Oh and I would be looking for a job if this ever came to pass. Square and some of these post may try to hide behind the statement "it's just a game" but its a business folks with square making Millions off it. They are claiming to offer a product and should be held to the same performance standards we all are, I assume, at work. The game should be up 24/7/365 just like my "game" at work has to be. When my cable goes out I just call them and my bill gets adjusted, why not with Square? If they can't complete the offer of a product by the month then they should charge by the hour so you would get what you pay for.

Yeah, game servers should be up 24/7/365, that's completely ridiculous to ask for game servers. You may work for an IT company but you obviously know nothing about MMO's. Please go play another MMO, and see how some of them have downtime nearly every day. There's a major software and hardware upgrade being done to the servers, asking for no time is unreasonable. It's a business folks? Then don't give this "business" your money and go to another MMO that doesn't have server downtime ever. When you find it, let me know.

And next time you have a problem with downtime, read the user agreement you signed that states that this downtime is to be expected and they basically owe nothing to the user for the time they can't play. Thanks.

I don't know why so many people dislike JP players except that you might be racist or something, i have never met a rude or annoying JP player, I have met several rude and annoying NA players though, and if you have only heard them say [I don't speak any English], there is a reason, most of them really dont speak any English, three words: "they" "aren't" "American", these words explain WHY they they don't speak English, its not a universal language you know. Most people on earth don't speak English, get used to it.

This server maintenance actually hits us European players ever harder than it does the US players, especially if we have a job. 10PDT is pretty much 6pm for us. So I get home from work at 5pm-ish and I get maybe an hour to play if i start playing straight away. 7 hours of maintenance takes us through till 1am, way past the time I need to be in bed if I want to be in any state to work tomorrow.

I was lucky, I got out early today and so had a little time to level up my marksmanship, but I was hoping to hit RNG25 from RNG20 by the end of the week and 2 evenings or playtime have been wiped out because of this maintenance. So please don't gripe too much all you NA players. I understand that some of you will have to go to bed earlier, but many of your will still have SOME time to play after the maintenance finishes. I will, again, have to wait till tomorrow.

Its interesting that all these bald eagle little soldier boys have decided that the time that when they ditch school and stay home to play FF is "Prime Time". Pfft, sorry that on your day of ditching you spent jerkin your yerkin. Most of us are at work heading home at 5 to hit the true Prime time of gaming. Hmm, maybe you should have to be 18 to post on a forum. Thank god we dont let them vote.
