Update Details

Here is patch details! Christmas is coming! (excitement) [Event-Related] - A sixth Gobbiebag quest has been added. Please note that the previous Gobbiebag quest must be completed before the new one will trigger. - Supply quests and regional teleportation to the Tavnazian Archipelago are now available. - Shortcuts into Promyvion ¨C Vahzl for those who have partially or fully completed the Promathia mission have been added. - The longer a player remains in the same area, the more difficult it will become to obtain certain items through logging and mining. - A mage from Windurst's Orastery has been dispatched to Jeuno. - Several new quests and events have been added to the Promathia areas. - The Bastok quest "All By Myself" can now be played regardless of whether or not one has the Chains of Promathia expansion pack installed. - The level restriction for the Tavnazia quest "The Big One" has been raised from 40 to 45. -The Old Sabertooth that plays a part in the quest "The Fanged One" will now only appear after a player has targeted the set of tiger bones in the Sauromugue Champaign. In addition, the Old Sabertooth will no longer drop any items. - Only players who have accepted the quest "Hook, Line, and Sinker" will be able to fish the monster in Qufim that drops the Egret fishing rod. - A new reward for completing the quest "Tuning Out" has been added. - The contents of the treasure coffers in Castle Oztroja have been changed. Accordingly, certain items will now be obtainable through different methods. - Weather coverage has now expanded to Chains of Promathia areas. - Players can now only target the Brass Statue in Castle Oztroja for a limited amount of time. - Monsters can now be caught while fishing in all areas of Qufim and the Buburimu Peninsula. - Several events previously unavailable for replay through town bards, etc. have been added to the replay list. Ballista The following changes have been made to Ballista. The following match types are area-specific: All or Nothing (one match) * Normal Items Restricted: Jugner Forest Best of Three (three matches) * Normal Items Restricted: Pashhow Marshlands Best of Three (three matches) * Normal Items Allowed: Meriphataud Mountains However, please note that items such as arrows, bullets, and projectiles are allowed in all areas. A new "temporary item" system has been added. Items that are dug up using the /quarry command can now be stored in one's inventory for the duration of the current Ballista match (set of matches). These items can be used at any time, but will be collected by the presiding Herald at the conclusion of the match. Only one type of each temporary item can be held at a time. If a player happens to dig up an item he/she already possesses, it must be used immediately or thrown away. A new point system for rating Ballista participants on their performance has been introduced. Players will earn and lose "Ballista Points" for their various actions on the battlefield. These points can then be traded for vouchers that are automatically exchanged for temporary items during future matches. Players will now build up a resistance to bards' lullabies after having the spell repeatedly cast on them. [Battle-Related] - Numerous BCNM battles have been added. Several gameplay issues have been discovered in the following three orb battles: The Final Bout / Today's Horoscope / Moa Constrictors - Implementation of the battles will be delayed until the issues have been addressed. Please check upcoming news for further details. - If all party members' HP remain at zero for a set amount of time, the party will be removed from the battlefield. - The conditions for certain notorious monsters to appear, as well as the drop rates for the items they carry, have been adjusted. - Several new notorious monsters have been added to the Chains of Promathia areas. - The following adjustments have been made in Promyvion ¨C Holla, Promyvion ¨C Mea, Promyvion ¨C Dem, and Promyvion ¨C Vahzl: Monster placement changes Monster movement pattern changes Monster level adjustments Monster item drop changes Memory stream appearance rates - An issue preventing the cure of "HP Max Down" and "MP Max Down" with holy water or the spell Cursna has been addressed. - A new thief job trait that increases the dexterity bonus of the ability "Trick Attack" has been added. This trait is called "Assassin." - The effects of select high- and low-level etudes have been adjusted. High-level etudes will now raise a player's attributes considerably more than before. However, the enhancement will gradually wear off with time. - The dragoon job ability "Spirit Link" will now not only heal a pet wyvern's wounds, but also cure it of detrimental status effects such as poison. - A pet wyvern's breath attacks can now be used to produce magic bursts. However, only an accuracy bonus will be rewarded if the MB is successful. - An accuracy bonus is now rewarded when using "Blood Pact" attacks during magic bursts. - The strength of physical "Blood Pact" attacks will not increase as much when fighting enemies considerably weaker than the summoner. The damage ratio when fighting stronger enemies has not been adjusted. - The variety of items that can be dug up using the "Scavenge" ability has been increased. - The Goblin Archaeologists that are found in the Konschtat Highlands, Tahrongi Canyon, and on the La Theine Plateau can now see through the thief ability "Hide." - The additional Stun effect of certain weapons will no longer activate in succession. However, it is still possible to repeatedly inflict the effect on a monster through magic spells and weapon skills. [Item-Related] - The transaction fee for items put up on auction is now based on the seller's asking price. The formulas for calculating the transaction fee are listed below. Jeuno auction houses: Single item fee = 2% of the seller's asking price +100 gil. Stacked item fee = 1% of the seller's asking price +400 gil. Other auction houses: Single item fee = 1% of the seller's asking price +1 gil. Stacked item fee = 0.5% of the seller's asking price +4 gil. In accordance with these adjustments, new messages will be displayed when putting items up on auction. Be sure to confirm these messages before completing a transaction. - The duration and effect of several foods have been adjusted. Effects Limits have been introduced to certain statuses that are affected by consuming meals and drinks. Those statuses are as follows: attack/ranged attack/defense/accuracy/ranged accuracy/HP/MP These limits vary with the type of food, as well as the consumer's job and level. We suggest trying many different combinations to see which foods are most effective in different situations. Effect Types The effects of most of the foods in FINAL FANTASY XI have been adjusted and categorized by type. Please note that this categorization will not affect the listing of foods on auction. Meat dishes Mainly improve attributes such as STR, attack, and ranged attack. Example: Grilled hare Sushi Mainly improve attributes such as DEX and accuracy. There are also some types of sushi that improve ranged accuracy. Example: Carp sushi Fish dishes Mainly improve DEX. There are also some dishes that improve accuracy and ranged accuracy. Example: Salmon sub Seafood dishes (other than fish) Mainly improve defense. Example: Boiled crab Cereals Mainly raise maximum HP. (The effects of most cereals did not require adjusting.) Example: Roasted corn Vegetable dishes Mainly raise AGI and ranged accuracy. Example: Pea soup Mushroom dishes Mainly raise MND, maximum MP, and enmity. Example: Roast mushrooms Pies Mainly raise INT and maximum MP. (The effects of most pies did not require adjusting.) Example: Apple pie Snack foods Mainly raise amount of HP and MP healed when resting. The effect duration of snack foods has been reduced to three minutes; however, synthesis production quantities, as well as maximum stack quantities, have been increased. Example: Garlic cracker Sweets (other than pies and snack foods) Mainly raise maximum MP. Example: Snoll gelato Drinks Mainly refresh MP. (The effects of most drinks did not require adjusting.) Example: Pineapple juice Others There are foods that do not fall into any of the above categories. These items have effects that may differ from those items listed here. Duration of Effect The duration of most food effects have been adjusted based on the dish's new categorization. 3 minutes: Snack foods (crackers, etc.) 5 minutes: High-quality snack foods, raw meat, fish, fruit, and vegetables 30 minutes: Stackable (12) dishes 1 hour: Stackable (12) high-quality dishes 3 hours: Unstackable dishes (not including drinks) 4 hours: Unstackable high-quality dishes - The "enhances effect of rice balls" attribute found on certain equipment has been enhanced. - The graphics of select throwing weapons have been altered. The icon graphics for the following items have been changed: Uchitake/Tsurara/Kawahori-Ogi/Makibishi/Hiraishin/Mizu-Deppo/Shihei/Jusatsu/Kaginawa/Sairui-Ran/Kodoku/Shinobi-Tabi/Mighty Bow - The stack number for several select items has been increased. In accordance with these adjustments, the buying and selling prices of the aforementioned items have also been changed. NPC Filter Previously, all PCs and NPCs (monsters included) not in a player's party or alliance were treated as "others." However, with the addition of the NPC category in the chat filter, players can now toggle on and off the display of text spoken by other PCs, without filtering NPC speech (and vice versa). Pet Filter Messages regarding the actions of a player's pet are now categorized with the actions of his/her master. To filter the pet messages from a party member, a player would have to use the party filter options. However, to filter the pet messages of a non-party/alliance member PC, the player must use the NPC filters. This type of usage may be changed in a future patch. Filter Accuracy The accuracy of the existing chat filters has been improved. This has been achieved by assigning priority levels to different types of PCs and NPCs. For example, previously, when a member of a player's party cast a spell on another member of the party, the "Effects of special actions on party" filter would not cover up the spell message; it could be filtered using "Effects of special actions on others." However, now that character priority levels have been introduced, this anomaly no longer occurs. Also, HP recovery messages are now covered by the "Effects of special actions" filters.

Does anyone know how to get the supply quest for the Tavnazian Archipelago?

On Pheonix, Bastok has control of the region. I have access to the Tavnazian Archipelago region. When I talked to the gate guards, they didn't have the region in the supply run list.

I don't see how this patch effects gilsellers at all. You individuals seem to be misreading what the patch actually does. In fact, from experience thus far, I have seen an increase in the amount of gold and dark steel I receive during my mining adventures. This patch has seemed to have put a higher % on these results instead of decreasing them. You people seem to have a problem with gilsellers, I believe that you're jealous of what they do, because they do it better than you and make money off of it.

Myself, I like all the updates done so far.

True, more needs to be done in the ways of gil sellers, but at least SE is making an effort. And I wouldn't be all too suprised if we see some suspected Gil sellers disappearing altogether from the servers.

As to the prices, like most have said, don't like the price, don't pay. If an item doesn't get sold, it gets sent back, seller has to put it back up and shell out more gil to put it back in. The result, unless they wanna risk it comming back again, they'll put it in for less.

The prices can be changed further, SE has set one part in motion, it's up to the rest of us to stop griping and actually doing something about it. Pretty much, SE has put the power in our hands, we just gotta use it.

As to the food, it's like most other things, a luxury and not a necessity. Sure, the stat boosts received are nice, but you don't need them just like you don't need certain equipment.

Sure, equipment and the like can help, but what makes or breaks your character, is the player behind it. If the people in a PT know what they're doing, even without food or the best gear available, they can still get the job done, and sometimes, if they work REALLY well together, even faster than those who do use food or have the best gear. And I speak from experience, I have seen this done a number of times.

Also, try not to stick with the sterotypes for the jobs. Take a look at other potentials and not just the norm, you may be suprised by the results.
Mining

I am not sure if anyone else has noticed, but the number of miners in Zherun Mines on Hades has dropped by an average of between 5 and 7 miners since the new patch. I used to rush into the mines on the rare occasions when the number of potential miners was less than 17, but, since the patch, the number of potential miners has rarely exceeded this number. In light of this decrease in competition, I can now make the same amount of GIL in one hour that it used to take 4 hours to make.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this decrease in mining activity may be the result of the new time-effect that was intended as a GIL-selling disincentive? I have noticed, for instance, that I haven't yet seen at least three-miners who used to be in Zherun mines 24/7 before the new patch.

Whatever the cause of this turn of fortune, my San D conquest supervisors and my TAB key certainly appreciate it.

Here's my 2 gil... All good news from what I can tell. Drg gets slightly nicer due to wyvern upgrades. (/hurray) Gil sellers get a small, well deserved kick in the balls. Thf gets nicer at 60+ (take that DRKs). Quests get modified for the better. Kudos to Squeenix for continuing to be progressive and player friendly.

I'm ok with the update for the most part, but I it seems like they got something wrong. For instance i've for the first time experienced the Final Fantasy program itself crashing with an illegal error now. That and I also suffered my first disconnect just 2 hours later, both since the patch came out. To make matters worse, while partying in Quifim, we would lose someone to disconnect about once every two mob fights. Anyone know wherether this is just server lag with the new patch being uploaded to everyone or if SE actually messed up here?

Errr, well, he said nothing of dispel. But I've asked mages about this question myself. The reason erase is so much is because all WHMs need erase, phalanx is more of a solo item for RDM, so if you only do parties, you don't really need phalanx. That's why the prices are different for them.

I can tell you why. Because dispel is for sale in NPC shops for 72k or so. This is what they should do for erase. NPC shops put a cap on AH prices since after all, no one's gonna buy phalanx for 300k if they can get it from an NPC for way less.

I totally agree, I'm a LVL40 RNG and I NEED 2 Sniper Rings +1 (2Mil each) and the Peacock Charm (10mil). Up until this time I've had the best of the best in terms of equipment and I feel obligated to continue that. However, I'm also an honest gil farmer, and I will not pay 14mil for 3 items. Forget it.

I don't think you actually NEED any of those things. Rare items are just that, rare. Not everyone has one. Not everyone needs one. Marksmans Rings are great as well as Carapace Rings. Peacock charm, that's kind of like the Hope Diamond of FFXI equipment. Props if you can ever get one. As for me, it's not that important that I am going to combat the voke bots or pay
7-9 mil (Bismarck). Point is (after all that) it is the attitude of "I absolutely need this or I suck" that perpetuates the skyrocketing prices. Variety is the spice of life after all.

Well let's take a sec and compare. You are mithra, mithra can excel in almost any job, so long as its not dependant on CHR or STR. I'm elvaan...if I want to be a ranger...I'm pretty screwed without major AGI and ACC boosts. With the ranger necklace I'm lucky if 20 arrows out of a full 99 stack actually hit their target...

SO you're absolutely EVERYONE doesn't need those items, just the races that absolutely suck at the particular job do. Hopefully the current actions against gil sellers and the new BCNMs will add good alternatives for Elvaan & Galka wanting magic and ranged jobs, Taru wanting melee jobs, and the Mithra's CHR incapacity.

I mean there are a lot of items out there, but sometimes use guys who aren't the best at jobs that your race is need that boost to be useful, that's all.

Yeah, I'm elvaan rng as well. I can tell you from experience that +accuracy isn't the same as +rng accuracy. Anything that adds +accuracy doesn't affect your ranged accuracy. So you don't get an added bonus from the sniper's ring.

Also, I recommend you don't get the sniper's rings because of the -defense. Rng already has very low defense, so when you pull hate, and you will pull hate, that extra 50 defense or so can be the difference between life and death.

If you want to buy a slightly more expensive item, I recommend you shell out the gil for hawker's knives or hawker's +1. You get 1 extra dmg on the dagger, more agl, and more rng accuracy. All of which are good things.

I'm afraid Mihke is right. True, that elvaan have low DEX, but as a ranger you don't really need it. DEX will help you connect your melee attacks, but that is vastly unimportant to a ranger compared to AGI and +Racc. Sniper Rings are a luxury, not a necessity, when there are other rings that will give you what you really need.

Unless you are one of those rangers who builds TP with daggers and only uses the bow for weapon skills, in which case I hate you.

i really don't have a problem with the sales tax, i can live with that, regardless of how unecessary it is.*cause gil sellers hardly care about a few gil, it's all profit to them*, this is only gonna hurt the people who earn gil honostly.

My biggest and only problem so far...is what was the need for the nerfing of the food? on Gilgamesh in one day Chiefkabob's skyrocketed to 15k a stack and can't be found on AH, were 8-9k, and mithkabobs are now 5k a stack, were 2.5-3k. they can only be HQ'd into 6 now instead of 12.

What is the purpose of that. they took a non problem and made it a huge problem. now people will either not be able to afford food and not be able to xp as well* which is totally unrelated to gil selling* or go broke trying to maintain a good level of play.

I don't know, i guess i just don't understand the logic, how people that can create such a good game, can go so far out of their way to make it worse for the honost players.

I think that maybe Square is trying to break up the kabob market... There are so many foods out there, and all anyone eats are kabobs or pies.

This can be a good thing for us cooks, and I'm really looking forward to being able to make more then just pies and kabobs all the time.

Of course, if everyone in the world still wants to eat nothing but kabobs, then this will probably cut even more into our profit margin on those items. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I think you are correct Zerila, Square is trying to break up the kabob market. However, I think that in order to break it effectively they need to provide an equal alternative to kabobs. Without an alternative then kabobs will continue to dominate the market because it remains one of the best foods for melee to eat.

I hope some of the other food changes Square instituted will provide equal food options.... Cause if they don't then anybody without cooking skill is going to hurt from this.

I AM PISSED...with the new food as well, no longer do Cheifkabobs increased Ranged Attack damage. What's a RNG to do now? Anyone know any other food that are at least as good as chiefkabobs that improve ranged damage.

If you want to sell an uber expensive item that cost an arm and a leg to put it up for sale, but don't want to lose that money if it doesn't sell, there's still the bazaar.
Yeah, yeah, it will probably take up more of your time looking for a buyer, but at least you'll save some cash if you're trying to be safe, right?

Yes, gil sellers, monopolists and the like will always be a problem as people here say, but you are forgetting one thing. It's not completely on Square's shoulders to combat these problems. You have to do your party as well.

All melees HAVE to have sniper's rings? And gil farmers exploit this by monopolizing them and selling them for insane prices? You know, this reminds me so much of real life. Some trend comes along, stores charge mega prices for them, taking advantage of the public's desperation for it. If you stop and look logically at things, you'll realize it's really not worth your time or money.

Remember, you don't HAVE to buy any item if you don't think it's worth it. I'm a paladin, be great to have vigor rings but at 450k each if I'm really lucky? In the grand scheme of things, is that extra 2 vit really worth all that money?

Gil sellers sell things at those ridiculous prices because we pay those ridiculous prices. When they try to exploit our desires, fight back and tell them to ***** off. Gil farmers won't let you get a chance at argus? Well, what if rangers just all said "Aw! Who wants a dumb old peacock charm anyway?" If you don't like those outrageous prices, I urge to not pay them. By paying them, you make them happen.

Don't let people tell you that you HAVE to get a certain item. You don't HAVE to do anything. It's your character, not theirs. Follow your own heart and you decide what's best for your character.

Unfortunately people place Value on the darndest things. Personally I do not discriminate based on gear (I like to have fun). However I'm sure we have all played with the people who do. They complain when somebody is added to a party who doesnt have the best armour. They whine and say thing like: "Why don't you have _______ yet?" "Why are you using _______ instead of _______?" Insert whatever items you like.

In my experience, when making a party I want to have fun with fun people--but I also want to survive. Axiom: it is easier to survive with well equipped people. This is a hard fact. Next time that you choose a better-equipped person over a lesser-equipped person remember that you are supporting the gil market.

The maddening thing is that there is no way around it. You are right: you don't HAVE to have something. But be aware of consequences. The consequence of not having something may be as little as having to take a rude comment now and again--or it may be as bad as not getting any party invites for days or weeks.

Assassain is gotten, from what I've heard, at lvl 60 and gives a significant boost to Trick Attack.

Now, take a look at the level, 60, the same time that Dark Knights start replacing Thieves. Assassain, from what I heard, can tack on quite a bit more damage to a SATA, thus making a Thf much more useful in a PT post 60.

Not sure on the level, but makes sense. 60 is when all other classes can have SATA w/ sub, which negates the necessity of having a THF stick hate on a NIN.
I'll wager that this will let them keep that hate sticking spot.

I dunno what all the complaining is about. Ill tell you somthing coming from someone who use to compete against Gil Sellers. While all those idiots stand on Mee Digee the Punisher's Platform Spam Voking away, Im on the floor grabbing him when he pops. I havent touched him in over 2 months but now i can get him 4 times in a row. I Finally got my Ochiudos Kote ^^ without paying 900k for them all thanks to SE new tactics.

Point being Gil Sellers cant jack up item prices anymore because the average joe can come in and have a good chance at beating them now and getting the item. Now if this person keeps the item ok one less bought from a gil seller, if they sell the item im sure itll sell for the last sold price but thing is since not only the Gil Seller can get this item the price will stay stable at current rates.

As for AH costs, i have a Haubergeon 2.7 Mil on Bismarck. Cost to sell it is 51.2 k. now do u think ima risk it by raiseing the price up past 2.7 mil and have it not sell or put it up jus a lil cheaper then last sold price so it definatly sells. Evantually the prices will lower and lower with people competeing to lower they price with last sold price.

Also if anyone has any Info on how to obtain the Venerer Ring ACC+3 Level 34. PLEASE DO REPLY ^^

I have been having alot of problems downloading this patch. Seems as if everytime i start the download ill get an error and have to restart. the first time i actually finished the download and then got an error installing and had to start all over again. has this been happnening to you guys? if so what did you do about it? please help me out i want to go on and play!! thanks in advance

It tooke me 6 tried before I got the patch, I think it was due to server load of everyone patching at once. I dont think the patching came from seperate servers/the server you game on, but one server set to handle the updates. I could be wrong but thats what I think happened

i think they also changed the spawn of stroper chyme from about 15 minutes to an hour or more. i was camping him after the update and didnt see a pop for about an hour. and not many people where camping it either. ive seen several new items,

and ive also herd of a Rare/Ex ring that adds accuracy. and the new lvl 50 Job specific equiptment ive herd things about. I'm not sure on the Rare/ex ring or the JSE lvls/anything.(ive just herd about them) i also triend a BCNM50 with some people, "Eye of the Tiger" it was a 3 person fight with a 15 minute limit against a tiger and we got destroyed, it was , Rng, Rng, Drk(me)
anyways i feel that this wont help stop the gil sellers much. in stroper chymes case they will just go camp another NM.

Yeah, Gil Sellers will still be a problem, but not as big.

Though at least it's a start, which is more than I can say for some other MMORPGs who really didn't take any steps at all.

And I think they're trying to maybe weed out the sellers and also try the less drastic ideas first before going even more drastic such as taking away the selling potential of certain items altogether.

I'm not gonna complain about the AH, yes, it costs more to put expesive items up for sale, but look at the bright side: this will likely lead to cheaper prices for those of us who are always poor (raises hand)!

Also, didnt they say something about new weapons and equipment before?

Yeah, they did, so far I've only seen 2 and both were high level back items. A new mage cape and a War/Pld mantle.

If there's more, either they haven't been put up yet or are Ex so they can't be sold.

the new items are prolly crafted. that means teh people need to bug the craft NPCs until they get the recipies, then the items need to be found. some are prolly from the new mobs that were put out, that would take even longer because now you have to go farm the items in a high level area with a pt.

I know that I am prolly exagerating, but this is worse case scenerio. I would give it a couple of days to let everyone find out how to get what.

My main complaint... only complaint really... is the fish prices. I worked my fishing up... to 56... just to catch these higher priced fish... and now that I can... they nerf them. Makes the last few months of being a MNK 36 working on my fishing damn near useless. As a fisherman, I think I have a right to catching SOMETHING that makes me money, without having to have LuShangs. Now, I can't... I gotta fish stacks and stacks of Moats to make anything, and even then, after an hour or two of fishing, their other nerf comes into effect, and I get screwed with Rusty Items. Kinda hurts.

And before you complain... look at it this way... a Miner can still go into a zone... and hit Plat Ores, Darksteel, Orichalcum, etc... I go to fish in a safe place for fish... and I get fish that sell for 100-500 now... there are NO fish I can really bank off of from the Guild anymore... so now what?

Personally, I hate to leave... but I feel like I got nerfed... and now I gotta run around, and farm... and mine... and harvest... I just spent months like I said working my fishing skill... 56 fishing isnt something you can get in a few days... now... Guess if I want to stay, I gotta get LuShangs, and go for Legendary fish... which means a few months of either NM camping, Farming, or Fishing Moats to get another 9254 fish for LuShang...

Purrsia, I think your math is a bit messed up.

1st off, if I'm selling crappy lvl 21 armor for 2k in a non Jeuno AH, I'll have a price of 21 gil to pay...NOT that big of a hit to even a person who is low on gil.

2nd, as to the higher ones. If I'm selling in Jeuno, a 1 mil gil item, that's a 20.1k hit, now, if it sells, it's not that big, but what happens if it gets sent back without having been sold? If I wanna put it back up in the AH at the same price, that's another 20.1k hit and now I've paid 40.2k gil to get this thing sold. But if I knock the price down lower to try and get a sell, I pay less of a tax to put it up AND I have a better chance of making some money on it.

As to stack items, sell them in a non-Jeuno AH and the prices will be lower. There's nothing in the rules that says things HAVE to be sold at a certain AH.

I remember in Ultima Online a few years ago, one of the ways they combated too much money in the market was by having NPCs sell really nice furniture people could put in their house. These items were RareEx (as far as UO went). The only problem with this in FFXI is the fact that only one person can see your house...

But I bet if they have an NPC that could tint your clothes different colors for a price, alot of gil would go out of the market and people could show off their neat threads. This would also be a good solution because it wouldn't actually affect gameplay because its just a cosmetic change.

The economy was WAY out of control in Anarchy Online. To offset this Funcom introduced several things with the new expansion they released. First player towns, which not only forced people to drop uber amounts of cash to buy land, but also a monthly rent fee. Also for the uber orgs (Guilds or LSes as it were) who could manage to obtain a superior HQ, had a cosmetic clinique that costs 100Mil to change your appereance that wasnt allowed via char creation. They also added new vehicle kits that ran a pretty penny as well.

This worked for about a month after release. It was damn near impossible to sell commonly saught after items for a few weeks. However it had an adverse effect, those who were rich became richer as they had more abilities to combat the newly arrived aliens, and those struggling to make ends meet ended up quiting as they couldnt keep up with the cost of new technologies or the cost of rent/upkeep on the player city land.

To me it would make a lot more sence if they kept track of player login time and position. If a person has been standing in one spot and fishing for 24 hours, thats not someone at a keyboard/controller pressing buttons, its a friggen bot. After reading their census they did during the summer (while waiting for the server maintenance) it seems they have these tools to do such a thing, to monitor characters behaviour. Why arent GMs roaming the servers/towns watching people? Granted that imposes big brother like activity but would also make botters more leary of running their program a week straight (as I have seen some chars in Windurst/Asura server do)

EQ (the first one) did that, you could dye your clothes and armor to a certain shade with a rogue ability, granted it's nifty but i don't think it really helped except giving more mobs being camped...so i think the npc ability could be a nice addition, also having patterns to go on tunics and robes and such would be nifty...hate to be the one that codes it though :p

Don't get your hopes up, I've been barking up that tree for months sending pleas like that to SE, I for one am tired of seeing every melee clas in the dunes wearing the same exact lizard gear. I've also been bugging them about new options for character creation, such as skin color, new hair colors, and more choices for faces, and body build/size. Personally I think they could be done, and with the dying clothes if you sold them on AH they would revert to normal color so as not to clog server memory, they're just lazy...

It won't happen. Not only because the game wasn't coded for it, but also because of two other reasons.. lag and scamming. The first; if you ever played Ultima Online, notice how incredibly massive the lag became when you approached a populated area, such as Britain bank, even if you were on a good connection. This is because the game had to parse the color data for every single item of clothing a player was wearing, and when you have nearly a hundred people onscreen at once, that puts a serious strain on bandwidth. Now, UO was a sprite-based game and for the most part, 2 dimensional. If they did that in FFXI, the game would go from "challenging on dialup" to "impossible without broadband". You can actually still play the game on a regular modem, although Dynamis and such would probably be out of the question. If you thought Jeuno was laggy now, just imagine how worse it'd be if the game now had half a dozen more things to download per-player!

The second reason is scamming. If you could dye items to your own colors, you can bet that someone would try to manipulate the trade window. Let's try and trade "Super Boots" (made up name), which have the same icon as "Lame Boots", but are a different color. We'll dye the "Lame Boots" the same color as the "Super" ones. I vehemently oppose scamming, but put two-and-two together and you'll see how one could easily deceive people this way. While still possible, it's hard to do in this game, and that's why those who do it are even more hated then, well, something that's hated a lot!

Actually, I've got a third reason for it too. Eventually, the programmers will get lazy, and then recolored items become the ONLY way to see new content. Using UO as an example again, it got to a point where their idea of "new" monsters, armor, etc. was simply giving them a color which you couldn't dye or see normally. How exciting.

However, this doesn't mean SquareEnix shouldn't change the color of monsters, since the game could load that data at zone time and never have to do it again until you zone again. It'd be nice to see different-colored leeches (and other mobs) someplace other then Sanctuary of Zi'Tah, for instance..

All good points except for one, the scamming.

I understand what you're talking about but if the programmers make it so that the color change during a trade is the original color rather than the altered, this wouldn't be an issue. And to do something like that shouldn't be too hard to accomplish, though I could be wrong.

But the other points, all valid arguments.
