Crafting

"The worst day fishing is better than the best day working."

Added in patch 1.8, Fishing is a new Crafting skill that anyone can get. It does not count towards your Tradeskill limit.

To begin Fishing, talk to your local trainer!

Trainers

It appears as though trainers are neutral and can be used by members of either faction.

Quests

You do not have to do the quests to learn fishing. You can train your next skill level from your trainer the same way you would any other tradeskill. However, the starter quest will award a fishing pole and your first lure recipe.

From Murin Remor on Bahralt Street in Sanctum or Trena in Meridian

  1. Fishing Lessons

From Molly Graysby in Silverwood at Argent Glade or Palometa in Freemarch at Kelari Refuge

  1. Shallow Water Fishing
  2. Deep Water Fishing
  3. Fishing with Lures

From Gwen Stillwater in Scarlet Gorge at the river near Scarwood Lift Base or Miz Stillwater at Stonecrest in Scarlet Gorge

  1. Near-Endless Fishing (28) - Fish 3 Toxophilic Stars from the toxic pools on Demon Steps

Recipes

First, a word about Lures - There are no upgrades to your lures. Each Lure you get does something different, so you never really outgrow them. Long after you have left the first zone, you will need to replenish your supply of Irresistable Water Snails. Therefore, use your first couple of Smooth Minnows to make Snail lures, use the next nine Minnows to get your Survival up to 10, and from then on use Minnows to make as many lures as you can. You will use them all.

The first lure recipe you will learn is Irresistable Water Snail, combining a Smooth Minnow and a Forest Pondleaper to make a lure that will improve your Fishing chances (improves where you land on the Fishing results table for the zone you are in, increasing your odds of a rare result).

To use a lure, right-click on the lure in your inventory, then left-click on your fishing pole (just like applying a rune). The fishing pole indicate the number of charges remaining.

How to Fish

First, get a pole from your trainer. It's usable from inventory but much easier if you make a hotkey on your action bar. Find a body of water and you're ready to fish!

Reeling in a rare catch!
Reeling in a rare catch!
  • To catch a fish, left click your pole and left click on the water to indicate where you would like to cast.
  • When the fish tugs on the line (water will splash) and you get the message Reel it in!, press the hotkey one more time or right-click once on the fish to reel it in. If you wait too long or click more than once, the fish gets away.
  • If the fish does not reel in, you have most likely hooked an uncommon item or rare fish. DON'T IMMEDIATELY HIT THE KEY AGAIN! Wait a few seconds for the fish to tug on the line again, and then left click on your hot key (or right click on the fish) to set the hook. Keep doing that until you catch it!
  • The better the quality of the fish, the more tugs it will give on the line.
  • You cannot fish while swimming, so to fish in deep water you need to be on shore or in the shallows. After clicking your fishing pole, mousing over the water will show a tooltip indicating whether that spot is shallow or deep water as well as the relative difficulty of fishing in that location.
  • Some zones have special fishing locations where rarer fish can be caught more reliably. Look for sparkles above the water and then fish directly on that location.
  • All fishing results for a certain water depth are available from all locations of that depth, but some spots will have a built-in bonus to the loot table so will tend to yield better results. There is no way to map these bonuses so you will just have to learn them the same way our grandfathers did... by fishing there and trying your luck.
  • Occasionally you will catch a Shallow water fish in Deep water. This is not common but it does happen.
  • All saltwater, deep or shallow, yields level 1 fish from the Silverwood or Freemarch tables. This includes any small islands but NOT Ember Isle.
  • Some lava pools (such as Blood Iron Pools in Iron Pine Peak, The Last Valley in Stonefield, and Fell Fields, Atia, and Searing Brink in Ember Isle) are fishable. Also, the tar pools in Droughtlands at Harlan's Lament are fishable.
  • Any water found in an instance will have the same minimum skill and fish as the parent zone the instance is in. For instance, The Well in The Fall of Lantern Hook has a minimum level of 150 and yields the same Deep water fish as The Well in the basement of Lantern Hook in Droughtlands.

Rare Schools

School of Common Fish in Ember Isle
School of Common Fish in Ember Isle
Sunken Boat
Sunken Boat
Look for sparkling schools of fish and cast at the surface directly above the school. The mouseover tooltip will change to the name of the school when you have the right spot. This may yield special rare catches or an increased chance for a "normal" rare. Your skill must be at least 5 above the minimum level for the zone before you can use these special locations. After a certain number of casts the school stops giving skill-ups.

Schools will initially give you a skill-up with every catch, from 5 above the zone minimum to about 25 above (when it goes from Orange to Yellow)! Periodically a Common school may change into another type. This will generally last for no more than 60 seconds, after which it will return to a common school.

  • School of Common Fish - Fish only, no trash. Orange from 5 to 30 above minimum skill to fish.
  • School of Rare Fish - Improved chance to catch Uncommon or better fish. Orange from 15 to 30 above minimum skill to fish.
  • School of Clever Fish - Improved chance to catch Uncommon or better fish. Orange from 25 to 45 above minimum skill to fish.
  • Sunken Boat or Crashed Boat - Improved chance to catch artifacts (including Trophy fish)! +5 to +?

Fishing by Zone and Skill

Fishing in a specific zone requires a certain skill level, so don't expect to hop into a top-end zone immediately. See the table below for the types of fish and minimum skill levels required to fish in each zone.

Different types of fish are found in different types of water and zones! Some are found in shallow waters while others are in deep waters. Deep water is considered to be water that would cover your head, whereas shallow water would not completely cover you. Note to Dwarves: Deep water is based on human size, not dwarf size.. sorry!

Each zone has Trash, Common, Uncommon and Rare fish in Shallow and Deep water. Trash and Sunken Treasure can be found in both Shallow and Deep water. All casts have a (very small) chance to return a random artifact or other item. Treasure chests contain coin and a chance for a rare item.
