melee dmg
# Dec 08 2007 at 2:21 AM Rating: Decent
Why is it that as lvl 52 mnk, i have never seen a MELEE dmg increase by using this? I do notice the difference in my chi-blast dmg, obviously. Also i notice a great difference when subbing mnk on jobs using 2H weapons. However, not once have i seen any dmg increase on a standard H2H first swing when boosted. As a matter of fact i have had some laughs (at my expense) when my inital set of swings(while boosted) is WORSE than almost any swings thereafter.
(PS- # of boosts ranged, depending on time available before swinging) Whataya think?

Hey gang-

I know this is an older post but I happened to find my way here and had a questions about Boost. It states that it "maxes out at 12 uses." Pardon the stupid question, but what exactly does that mean? That after 12 it has to 'recharge' for a time before you can use it again? I'm assuming so, but not sure. Thanks a bunch- :)

it last 3 minutes, and recast ever 15 seconds, So if you keep recastin it you can have it stacked up to 12 times then after the first 3 minuets for the first one you cast is up, you can recast again, so on, so on

there are a few good reasons to use boost.

1) I've heard, not sure if it's true, that 1 boost is about the equivalent hate of 1/3 of a provoke. I know I get quite a bit if I use it in an exp party too much. Just in case you ever for some really really odd reason have to pull hate, you could try spamming boost.

2) It does improve damage. but at level 5, it's not going to be terribly noticable. at 56 I can boost up to about 800 attack. trust me, that's noticable, and not advisable.

3) Berserk + Boost + Weapon Skill = Beat down, throw in focus for raging fists or any weapon skill where you hit more than once. I try to space them out though, so I don't pull too much hate. throw out berserk and focus at about 60-75% TP then boost right before you use your weapon skill.

4 Boosts + mnd gear + Chi blast = insane damage.

max boost is = 999 then it will re-set, normal damage cost to mob is 400+ to ep but depends on what gear your using atm.

I think it must not work right on very low levels. I just learned it (lv5) and boosted to double my normal attack (maybe a little more). Hit a Tiny Mandragora 1st hit for 12 second for 16.

Hit one unboosted. 16 and (crit)21. The second part may have been a crit, but the first was definitely a regular 16. Giving doubt to random... it still seems a bit off. I should have been hitting for 20 on the first ones.

I've always had problems noticing this. I mean, so often I seem to miss my first hit after many boosts... so it's hard to check sometimes, but generally I notice no difference. Maybe I'm just unlucky.

Also, I have a question: Does it boost for both attacks or just the first one?

there is a damage cap, you need to raise your STR< but at level 5, thats pretty much impossible

For anyone that was curious. Boost gives exactly 12.5% bonus to ATK each time you use it. So if you Boost 12 times (The most you can fit in the 3 minutes) You get a bonus of +150% to your next attack.

Here are the screens I took of my experiment.

My base ATK, I got it to exactly 100 so that it would be an easy comparison.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/shaloo/Boost-Berserk/9-BoostBonus-Base.jpg

Here is me with one Boost, 112 ATK, so it rounds down odd factions.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/shaloo/Boost-Berserk/10-BoostBonus-Boost.jpg

And here I am with 12 Boosts. 250 ATK. So the system keeps track of those odd fractions and adds them in when they make a whole.

boost macro
# Jan 18 2005 at 10:04 AM Rating: Decent
before you use any WS macro, put a boost /wait 1 before it, you'll do considerably more damage with all your weapon skills. Note: this does make it a bit harder to time the SC, but its well worth it.

Boost and Warcry is not stackable, found this out to my great dissapointment. if you have boost, you won't add teh warcry attack as well, but you will have it once you use your attack with the boost effect. Also, boost ups you attack more than warcry. so for anyone using warcry in their Skill chains, only use it when you DON'T have Boost to use instead.

Edit: Also, after lv 41, stack as many boosts as you can before using Chi Blast, i usually go from doing about 30-45 damage to around 160-180 with about 4-5 boosts. great way to start a battle, about as good as taking the first voke for a NIN tank

well i have been playing a warror with mnk subbed. I'm using a great axe so I miss alot. But when ever i use boost before an attack it always seems to hit. I have been trying to test it on the same type of mobs. with out bosst i hit 18 or of 30 swings with boost I hit 25 out of 30. I wondering if anyone else can test this.

I was 23war/11mnk fighting land warms in quifim fighting land worms with a pl. The worms are tough to me.

You miss just as much as with any other weapon. On second thought, you miss less than with other weapons, besides 1h axe, because its your A(+ doesnt matter yet) rated weapon. Its just a lot more noticable when you miss, since its like missing 2 times in a row with faster weapons.

I notice the opposite. At least when i stack boosts, i ALWAYS miss the boosted hit. Don't know about 1 boost though.

18/30? wow... thats almost a 50% hit rate, and on a T? Do you have a neckchopper? If not get one, and cap your Gaxe if its not capped.

I was wondering if "boost" ability was worthless or not the whole time i lvled my mnk from 1-41. I noticed little difference at all in my dmg. Occassionally, if i boosted LOTS and managed to actually hit the Mob with first punch, the difference was apparent, but nothing special.
Then came "chi blast"...... by itself not spectacular, but if you have the opporunity to boost for almost a whole 3 min. then let loose a chi blast...WOW! Very fast, very powerful ball of energy. I find it funny that they give you "boost"
36 levels before it has a noticable differnce on any attack. In the end boost/chi is fantasic!

Of course there's uses for it. Stack 11 boosts, walk up to a mob, engage, and start spamming your Combo macro like there's no tomorrow. You'll combo before you get a chance to hit and use up the boosted attack.

at 13 i was lvling at the out post. I was fighing EM and DC orcs. My normal hit does 12 to 20 damage. When I stack 4 boost I did atless 20 to 25 both hits. I have also noticed that if I stack 7 boosted my first it is almost always a crit. I havent tested it but I see a diffrents

Once you get to higher levels im a lv 27 mithra mnk, and i sware by this it a great skill, stacking usualy can get you anywhere from 120 to a 200 point att boost, if you do it for 2 minutes and 45 seconds, then go smack something, in addition during combat this skill is great because while the puller is looking sit there and boost for an ever greater att, im currently in the jungle outside of kazham i constantly stay under mithkabobs, and try to stay boosted outside of battle, my first action, each hit hits for about the same as the wars and what not. so in all actualy im doing two to two and half times the damage they do *hugs boost*

I am a thf/mnk until I can get my nin ability. I have to tell you. Boost has made me a force to be reckoned with. When soloing I can get my attack up to 176, and I start a fight with a Sneak Attack+Wasp Sting. My record was 160 dmg to a 36 exp easy. Using this w/ a silence dagger I was able to single handlidly take out a 36 exp ghost (had to use Perfect dodge as well).
Despite the battle spam generated by the constant boosting, this works as a great start to a battle. As to difference in dmg. 1-2 boosts makes little difference (it does make a difference) in single attacks you are doing damage to about +1-2 lvls for each boosted attack (watch on lvl up, see if your attack increases by 9... I doubt it will go by that much even), however, over time, or by building up your boost you can do 10-30 pnts more dmg then normal. Oh and yes, Monks, since they have more attacks appear less likely to hit, and so your boosted attacks can miss quite oftent. W/ my thf, I use a single handed weapon, and tend to hit more with my boosted attacks... but then again, mnks attack more often then any other character.
My boost macro:
/ja Boost <me>
/wait 16
/ja Boost <me>
/wait 16
/ja Boost <me>
/t <me> Need more boost in 15 seconds
When I see the tell, I hit the macro again... works great.

"/echo (|Boost|) (|Ready|)" is so much cooler than /tell.

The "(|" is auto-translator of course. You don't have to if you don't want to. Because I'm sure you can understand your own language. But still...it looks keen.

I've been fighting clippers lately as a lvl 20 war/mnk and boost works great for me. I agree that I miss most of the time anyway, but a few times I boosted for about 2 minutes, and did 80 dmg instead of my normal 40 to the clipper. My attack was up to almost 200 when it normally is at a little over 100. That's a big difference, especially on those high def mobs.

Same problem here, even if I stack 3-4 times there's almost no difference between the boosted attack and what I normally hit for (assuming I even hit, does Boost decrease ACC or something? Because it seems 9 times out of 10 I'll whiff the attack I've been boosting for 2 minutes). Lately I've been ignoring Boost for the most part and concentrating on Dodge and Focus (finally, useful abilities!). I have, however, noticed Boost can be quite useful before a weapon skill. Combo w/o Boost does around 40-50 to an IT mob, if I boost it once, it sometimes does 60-80.

Combo
/p (|Combo|) >>> <bt> in 3! <call14>
/wait 2
/ja "Boost" <me>

That way there's little chance that I will make a punch between when I boost and use my weaponskill ...

I have 2 boost macros

Boost:

/wait 15
/ja "Boost" <me>
/wait 15

/echo <<< Last Boost >>>

ReBoost:

/ja "Boost" <me>
/wait 15
/ja "Boost" <me>

So I alternate Boost > ReBoost > Boost > ReBoost

so I can get the max during the inside the 3 minutes the cumulative effect will last ...

It works with both dagger and sword as well (so most likly it stacks with any weapon.)

as a thf/mnk on the pull a 2 min boosted SA generally can pull in some serious damage to even high DEF mobs.

course, for chains the boomerang is much faster.

I've tried many many times. I can boost my attack up to about 165 from under 100. Then I attack and either MISS or hit for what I usually hit for. What the hell is this skill good for? If you have to use it 12 times to see a hit for 2 HP extra, it's a real ripoff. What am I missing here?
411 on Boost
# Dec 11 2003 at 10:05 AM Rating: Default
You do get Boost automatically at lvl 5. You'll find it under Job Abilities. It can be cast every 15 secs and is stackable. At level 5 it will increase your attack by 3 each time you use it and the higher your lvl the more it will increase. What most people do is use it every 15 secondes when it becomes available, it will begin to stack on itself then. However after 3 min or after your first attack it will revert back to normal. You can stack it up to 12 times in the 3 min period, for around a 36 point bonus to attack on your first hit. It's good to use while waiting for the puller of your party to come back. I suggest a macro like this
/ja "Boost" <me>
/wait 15
/tell <me> Boost Ready
this way I know when i can cast it again. Hope this helps.

Instead of /tell <me>, you could just use /echo Boost ready! It gives you single line yellow text. A bit more specific and helpful.

I maybe doing this already, but i wanted to be sure, but when i hear talk of staking, do you just mean casting it over as soon as it goes away, or is there a better way of getting it off that I need to know, i am a lvl 10, and I am doing ok, with what I have, but I would love to be able to take full advantage of my monk abilities, please forgive the newb question, but I am converting from EQ to FFXI and there are some things that I am finding out more and more eachday thank you for your information.

There are 2 categories of a effect compatibility. Things can either "Stack" or are "Not Stackable" ... Think of "Stack" as Combine or the ability to co-exist.

Example time:

Boost = +ATT
Lets just say you are a level 25MNK, and you Boost for +20 ATT ... now, if you boost again, you will combine (or stack) the 2 +20 ATT into +40ATT ... the recast timer is not affected by wether 2 effects will stack or not. So, if you Boost 7 times, before the effect wears off (you will get 7 effects of +20 ATT which equate to a single effect of +140 ATT. Boost, in its entirety, will wear off within 3 minutes of the initial boost or when you engage an enemy and hit(or miss) it.)

An example of effects that do not stack. Say you boost, +20 ATT, then you use Warcry. These effects do not stack. When effects do not stack, the stronger effect will be the one that remains. So, if Warcry would raise your ATT +30, then your Boost would wear off, and you would gain the effect of Warcry ... now, if you had boosted 3 times, and had a stacked effect of +60 ATT, then you use Warcry, you would not gain the effect of Warcry...

Another way to look at is is a stack of pancakes. If you have a pancake that gives you +20 ATT, and you throw another on top, then you have 2 pancakes at +20 ATT each, so your plate (or cumulateive effect) is +40 ATT ...

All this posting has made me hungary ...I'm gonna eat some pancakes...

What some people don't realize is atack doesn't affect your base damage...it affects your damage consistency. Str with help your max damage be higher but attack will help you hit closer to your max. The people that try these test are ussually soloing and its not very hard to hit for max damage on things close your lvl. But in exp parties you don't ussually hit for your max damage because the mobs have so much more def than you have attack. Thats where you will notice the difference.
