Most people are saying don't use it, a couple others are saying the others are confused and we should use it(though haniblecter only has a lvl 30 War based on his profile in this thread and keeping hate at that lvl is actually quite easy so it is probably working fine for him)

I currently have a lvl 48 Warrior and subbing Monk and am the main tank in my set party(yes I know my sub is my first problem but that is a different discussion - currently I am working on my Ninja sub). I have a thief in the party which helps me with initial hate control. After that it is up to me to try and maintain it which I do a very good job of.

My experience with Defender in the 40 levels(more so after 45) is that using defender doesn't make up for the loss in attack. You may get some hate from using it and a little more hate from the lowered attack of the enemy on yourself. (though after losing hate then using defender, it has never brought the hate back on me).

It does help my defense by taking it from 300 up to about 361 with Protect III and a Fish Mithkabob. My Vitality is also at 55+16.

I end up losing hate quicker with it on than with it off. My attack drops enough that I can go from hitting bats in Garlaige from 60-100/hit all the way as low as 0-40 on IT mobs.

Yes the mage does have to heal a bit less, but with a good Red Mage(with refresh and convert) and White mage, down time is minimal at the worst of times.

My experience is don't use it unless it is an emergency (i.e. down in the red for hp and no cure coming your way).

Defender reduces the amout of damage you take, that reduces the amount you need to be healed, and that reduces down time.

Always use defender, the other posters are very confused.

I'll have to disagree with the posters who think a tank shouldn't use this ability. As a PLD tank, I don't cause much damage anyway, however, when I use anything that increases my defense, like sentinal(have now), the hate comes back on me like a magnet. I have no reason to think that defender will do any less. I'm looking forward to another ability in my ******* to keep the hate on me so everyone else can do their jobs without agro.

I don't know why your subject says "Good Item" but anyhow... Sentinel does that because it is designed to lower the rate at which enmity is lost (as said by SE), however it also grabs a bit of hate itself. Defender does nothing of the sort, and it has nothing to do with the defense gained. If you ate a fish mithkabob, the only hate you'd gain is the hate from using it which is very very very very very very very very very little.
In short, Defender doesn't do a damn thing for hate except make your attacks weaker, thus leading it to be less pissed at you. I wouldn't say don't use it though, unless you're /nin, then you shouldn't.

I just got this ability yesterday. Is it useful for minimizing downtime(healing) when fighting low-level monsters for items?

I just found out that this + Berserk don't cancal each other out, instead, if you have both on then you can get +5 more points on to both def and dmg, don't know if that's useful for you but it sure is kind of useful for me

I tried this tonight with no difference in stats. Perhaps something else was effecting it that you overlooked?

This is wen u lose the def defender makes up for that same thing wen u do berserk defender keeps that down therefore it would not change

Please use this ability wisely. I just left a group where I couldn't convince the warrior to stop defending.. The problem being. With his attack power lowered. he couldn't hold aggro worth S**t.

Defender also generates some hate when you use it. But of course since the cooldown is so long its probably trivial compared to the hate you lose form the lowered attack, though in my experience the differnce in damage is hardly noticeable. Definitely this abilty should pretty much be held up constantly for any main tank - its especially useful for PLD when you get it at level 50 since your attack is so weak anyways the attack loss is a moot point and there are so many options for holding hate that its easy to make up for any erosion from the atk down effect. At level 50PLD/WAR it basically means an extra 20% defense (75 points or so) that I can hold up all the time. Although i recal noting at lvl 25 WAR when i orinigally got it that it was only giving +25 defense, so it must scale with your defense or level or something

You hold hate by not getting hit also, and using provoke. All good tanks should use this in a battle as well as provoke. Your stupid tank was doing it right, jsut didnt have the other things working like provoke most likely
#REDACTED, Posted: Jun 08 2004 at 1:23 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Using defender while tanking is a bad idea. The amount of hate generated by getting hit is trivial compared to the amount of hate you get by hitting things for damage. You lower the downtime by taking less damage but you raise the downtime because the healers have to heal other people and the fights last longer when using this skill.

Eh, using Defender would save my *** at times in Kazham if we had to take on a Gob. Sure I didnt hit so hot, but the damage reduction meant the WHM could keep up and we could kill the Gob.

A good way to use it is in conjunction with Backstab/Trick Attack for Paladins...
