SA/TA + WS

This question is assuming a THF is 60+.

If TA transfers any hate received to the TA partner, then wouldn't it be best to do SA + WS and then TA the tank?

You would have all that hate from the massive damage from the SA + WS and can transfer it right over to the tank with an automatic TA.
For example:

I would gear change, SA + DE, gear change, TA the tank.
Dancing Edge modifiers are STR and DEX, so I would assume since you were stacking on DEX for SA that DE would be most effective. And then stack on as much AGI as you can for the most out of TA.

It sounds good to me, but people say that SA +WS is best in damage and TA + WS is best in hate control. But thats what confuses me. TA + DE doesnt seem like it would be the best thing to use based on the modifiers of DE.
I dont know if I am missing something here. I'm gonna test it out later. let me know what you guys think.

To begin what is Enmity, if i had to guess i would say it's hate am I correct?
Also with Accomplice/Collaborator transfering enmity to the thf, if enmity is hate then by using trick atk behinde the tank after using Accomplice/Collaborator wouldn't it transfer the enmity to the tank?
this i wish to know an upcoming thf!

Im sorry i cant provide a link to prove it, but in my experience (if i understand your question) yes, when u steal emnity, you are adding that emnity to your current value, Trick Attack Dancing Edge would, if properly set up, transfer that same emnity to trick partner/tank. I genereally do the reverse as a thf, which allows me to TA non-traditional TA partners, such as buffed rdm or sam.

I notice a lot of people on the boards keep saying that trick attack hits and misses much like a regular attack, but from my ample experience I've found that trick attack will usually miss if I don't have any hate on me. If I do have hate on me, then it will hit and transfer that hate.

I have noticed something that makes me believe AGI is either a partial or minor factor in Trick Attack's damage, while farming in buburimu as level 45 with another THF, i noticed Trick Attack alone did twice the damage of Sneak Attack on the dhalmels, and in exp situations it's normally Sneak Attack that does more damage than Trick attack.

I'm guessing the attack vs defense relation affects it, however there's pretty far betwen the Dia II using parties these days, so hard for me to test it properly. I have noticed that SATA + Viper Bite does about 200 more damage to Funnel Bats than to Chamber Beetles in garlaige though.

This post may have been a while ago but I would like to say that bats are weak to piercing weapons (i.e. dagger). It will be normal to do the highest damage which is why many Thieves may enjoy Gustav tunnel and Garlaige Citadel more than Crawler's Nest because of the bats).

Edit: My connection is a spaz, had to correct something.

Every job has their PROs and CONs to them, if i ever hear about someone bashing something like a job or item it is usually because they do not under stand it. With there always being a thfs seeking it can be there are alot of people lvling their thfs at that moment, my server has the same problem at times, one week its pld everyone lvl and then next week thf.

I don't know much about being a thief, but you are right, thiefs don't do the greatest damage in the world, their uses are mainly for drops and hate management. They also pull well and i like daggers cause they don't get a bunch of hate, whereas you party with a DRK trying to find a happy medium between super-damage and getting hate, and suddenly they use Souleater and get hit while the mages assume they know what they are doing. Thiefs can hit often and well, chipping away at enemies while making sure that a tank can hold hate. In this, overall party damage can increase, like if you have a sweet little BLM with uber MP and INT, they don't have to wait forever to cast safely, they can nuke much more effectively. You are right though, if you want a SINGLE CHARACTER that can do the most damage, pick something like a DRK. If you want a good party, you can use a THF (not to say that you can't have a good party without one). Bottom line, i've found, no job is bad, its your PT setup. No race combo is bad either. I'm an Elvaan RDM and i use MP efficiently, while i've seen a stupid Taru eat crap because they don't do their job. Also, the best tank that i've ever known is a Taru NIN (he never gets hit). Way to go Highguy! I don't think you should claim that any job is a waste or that you shouldn't be something that you want to. Its thoughts like that which make a DRG seek for hours because people are Jobbists. Play whatever job you want, no matter the race. If you do your job well you will succeed. Also, its hard to be a THF because even at LVL 70+, SOME PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW SATA WORKS! stand in a line people....stand in a friggin line. ^^

Oh for PITY'S SAKE.
THIS is what pisses me off about being DRK. People assume that we're idiots, who have no idea how to play our jobs!
I almost NEVER use souleater in a party situation, except in a dire emergency, and only then combined with Blood Weapon.
I balance myself, turning around if I'm generating far too much hate.
So why do I not get invites? DRK can parse with the best of them...
I think, it's because idiots assume that we don't know what we're doing. >< And what can I do to change it? Nothing. SO I rant.

The only hate they're going to get is from the WS if you're talking about DRG/THF. TA will transfer all hate, not just hate from an attack, making SJ kinda useless except for certain situations.

Okay, I know I'm not the best Thf, (46 Thf/Rng, Arithael) But I have done exhaustive research on Sneak attack/Trick attack. Pretty much the biggest thing I would say is for the rest of the party. Here's the scenario:

Imagine that everyone involved has an imaginary line running straight ahead and straight behind them. Like an arrow pointing directly out of your forehead. Now, for the MAXIMUM sata damage, your Ta partner MUST be directly behind the mob. Not off to the side a little, not 'kinda' behind it, but DIRECTLY. Second, the Thf must line up similarly behind the Sata partner. This will deliver the Maximum damage.

Also, using weapon skills is a very effective method to cause damage. I like to use Distortion, usually with Piercing arrow or Tachi: Enpi at the beginning, and if the party is lined up as such, I have done OVER 500 damage on the Sata Bite alone. That's not counting the Enpi and magic bursts.

So often ppl will get mad at the Thf for directing them around so much, but honestly, it well help the entire party immensely. In essense, ppl must all work together when there is a Thf in the group, because this takes SO much more cooperation than other pt's (I've leveled 3 jobs past 30, I've played with all kinds of classes)

Overall, I'm not trying to chastise anyone, but these are things that are absolutely and most definitely confirmed, and they can help you be all the Thief you can be.

Trick attack boosts dmg to your next attack (everyone knows the condition for that). What is not addressed here is that IT DOES NOT ADJUST YOUR ACCURACY like Sneak Attack does. The only way I have found to date to get a Sneak Attack to fail is to use a ranged weapon skill. I was curious ok... anyways, that is for another discussion. Anyways, Sneak Attack does not miss. While Trick attack will only increase the damage of your next hit (if successful) by a modified amount. Now the amount is based off of an unknown level of success, combined with AGI, combined with attack, weapon skill level, and Level(That may just be a side effect of weapon skill level). Now with that said, you can use Trick attack with any weapon skill and immediately solve the accuracy problem (please note: Some weapon skills do not give 100% accuracy) including Gust Slash. So, with that said. If you use Trick Attack, there is a chance you can miss. This is one reason why SATA is better then spliting the attack. But even using SATA, there is a chance that the base damage for the Trick attack is low. You can see this by watching non-weapon skill enhanced SATAs. They can greatly vary in damage even in the same fight. As well as you can see the dramatic increase in damage by adding in the right Weapon Skills (from what I have seen, unfortunately, I am too low a level to confirm this, Viper Bite sucks in comparison to Dancing Edge... :( I WANT LVL 60!!!)

So, benefits and proper use of Trick Attack.
+SA = 100% accuracy + Critical DMG multiplier
+WS = > Base DMG + elemental or status effect
+AGI = > % DMG Increase + accuracy (Ranged and melee)... Please note the increased accuracy may be what causes the DMG increase since they do appear to directly correlate... however, I have no way to directly prove the connection)

Oh, and on a side note
+DEX = > % Critical Damage modifier... so it will also help Trick Attack, since Trick Attack causes a critical. Agility doesn't help SA because it does not appear to have the accuracy sliding scale that Trick attack does... higher AGI = a more solid hit for a lack of a better way to phrase it.

<< Pending update based on new information from the 12/8 update). As far as the new information goes, Trick Attack causes an increase in Dex on a successful hit. From my experience with Trick Attack, and the fact that I now know this (this is the statement from SE:
-- A new thief job trait that increases the dexterity bonus of the ability "Trick Attack" has been added.
This trait is called "Assassin." --

So, since Dex influences the critical success rate, Trick Attack appears to boost that, and now Assasin will boost the boost of Trick Attack allowing for a more solid successful SATA. This does not appear to invalidate any of the previous information about Agility directly influencing Trick attack.>>

Anyways, that is what I have found out so far. Let me know if I am totally off base on this, but to my tests this appears to be accurate.
<updated information on Agility (previously did not include Accuracy. Updated Sneak Attack, I forgot to add the part about it increasing the Critical Damage multiplier (basically it is like an incredible dex boost with a 100% accuracy). Also added information on the new assasin trait to note it's correlation with the equation.

As a test to my theories I have recently pted with a few different thf/nin. And having mediocre equiptment (I have a +6 dex and +8 agility... please note: my equiptment listed is not up to date) I have been able to deal equal if not better dmg then every one I have pted with. Each one having up to if not more then double my dex bonus (one was even another mithra). Having said that, none of them have had any agility bonus worth noting (maybe +1 or 2). This has left me to believe that my information still stands correct that agility does influence Trick attack. So it appears that it is Agi = Better Trick Attack = Better Dex Bonus = Better Sneak Attack.
(wow, wish I could have worded it that way last month when I first wrote this:)

I have heard quite different about this... I have heard at length that Dex does indeed affect critical hit rates. I do not know that from anything other than posts on boards like this, so just as a warning I might be wrong, but then based on my very reasoning there so might the previous posts be wrong.

If anyone has any direct information from SE regarding this that would be the only good way to say...

Based on both hearing it from many other people and personal experience DEX does affect crit hit rates, AGI probably reduces CRITs against you (not as sure on that, many ppl believe it though).

Although very much not advised for exp parties...trick can be used on its own. All you need is a trick partner...you do not have to be behind the mob. This can be great if you're in a duo and want to get aggro off of you, or anytime there's no other voker and the mob's facing you.

Also, your partner has to be in your party....you cant trick a mob on to some unsuspecting afk person after you have started a fight - or while power leveling (I've tried ><;)...shame shame!

I duoed 32-33 this way with a pali - he never had to voke no matter how hard I hit. I would cast utsusemi, sneak attack, wait till blink wore off, run behind him, trick it onto him (rinse repeat)...worked like a charm. We were able to take and sometimes chain even matches to toughs this way =D

It took a while, but it's more fun than sitting around LFG for hours, and the drops were great.

How Trick Works
# Feb 06 2004 at 4:37 PM Rating: Good
It saddens me how many Thieves do not understand how Trick Attack works (especially since the scrolling help bar at the top of the screen tells you). So I shall explain!

As you progress in level, the word "job" isn't the classes you pick from. Each class has a JOB that it is supposed to do. WHMs keep the party alive, WARs keep aggression, etc etc. Thief is a damage class, and a support class.

Your group will have a "main tank," which is the person that will have aggression of the mobs during the fight. Don't want our mages getting wooped. Sometimes the tank can't always keep aggro, due to the nuking BLMs and WHMs healing, or whatever. This is where the Thief comes in.

Trick Attack can ONLY be used from behind another party member. It doesn't seem to be as strong as Sneak Attack, but it definitely does more than 1x normal damage (I've noticed it can do 2-3x, seems to work in "crits" like a normal swing). Whenever you use it from behind an ally, the monster thinks the ALLY did the damage. Sooooo...

Combine Sneak Attack, Trick Attack, and a non-elemental WS (only kind that will work), preferably Viper Bite if you have it. This will cause you to do around 350 damage at level 30. I just got level 40, and now I'm doing about 450 to IT mobs. And Viper Bite causes poison! :D Do this to a mob, and it's going to be REAL mad. But not at you.. at the TANK! :D

Now what's even more awesome is when you throw your SA/TA/WS into a skillchain. LOL. Just watch the mob's HP.. Here's 3 tips to help you:

1.) Use macros. I doubt you can do the SA/TA/WS without them.
Macro1: /ja "Sneak Attack" <self>
Macro2: /ja "Trick Attack" <self>
Macro3: /ws "Viper Bite" <t>

2.) Unless you're fast enough, sometimes you'll get the SA and TA off but not the WS. The best way I have found to do it, is wait right until you know you're going to swing, then start it. That way you have some time to get all 3 in.

3.) There's VERY few Thieves that do this. But they really should. If you're not the puller, when you see the puller's "incoming" message, you should use SA/TA. That way the timer will be counting down, and by the time the mob is there and you attack it, you'll be ready to SA/TA again. If, on the other hand, I am the puller, I do it right before I use my incoming message and throw my boomerang.

Hope this helps everyone. Also hope it helps everyone realize how important Thieves are. :P Good luck!

The way we execute a party with a thief is you have a puller or secondary puller go and grab the mob. The THF and SAM are already lined up. I (the RNG) run past both of them and just after passing hit Ctrl+A (attack mode) which causes a U-Turn. I end up facing the SAM with room for the MOB. The mob runs right in between the RNG and SAM with the THF behind the SAM. Pops his macro of death (SA/TA/Viper Bite) and the MOB turns on the SAM. The SAM then uses Tachi: Enpi, provoke, and a weapon skill when ready.

The hate at this point is SOOOOOO high on the SAM that I can Barrage and fire at will. BLM could likely nuke at will but be wary of too high a Magic Burst.

Yes you can use a PLD, but until the PLD has Flash, the SAM with Tachi: Enpi generates ample hate to keep little old RNG me alive.

To complete the picture (this is old information but for some reason it's not here), here's how to stack Trick+Sneak in a party.

< and > indicate who is facing in which direction.

[THF]> [TANK]> <[MOB] <[SOME FORM OF WAR]

Now the [S.F.O.W.] provokes.

[THF]> [TANK]> [MOB]> <[S.F.O.W.]

At this point someone optionally starts a skillchain where the THF is involved (at the end, preferably). The THF activates Trick+Sneak Attack and ends the skillchain. Now the mob hates the TANK again.

[THF]> [TANK]> <[MOB] <[S.F.O.W.]

Now TANK Provokes again and MOB is locked pretty hard onto him. This works best of course with Paladins, who can follow up a Provoke with Cures (presumably on the S.F.O.W., who has by now taken a hit or two from MOB) or offensive magic (Flash) on MOB. I have also seen this as a very successful combo with two blinktanks in the party, as locking hate onto a blinktank can be a challenge. The S.F.O.W. in this case is always a WAR/NIN or NIN/WAR. This is a great way to bounce hate for Utsusemi recasts.

Do this repeatedly and the results are amazing. Your TANK will NEVER lose hate if you do this effectively.

One thing to note about these, I am working on setting up a series of different SATA WS attacks. Those of you who do SkillChains probably notice the MASSIVE increase in damage... especially when followed by a Mana burst:)
Personally I am a big fan of the Shadowstitch. Though the damage is not increased, the attached effect is beautiful. If you can get this off at the begining of a fight, the mob's decreased accuracy will greatly help you in the fight. I do agree, Viper Bite and Wasp Sting are great for their poison abiliity (I think one is the same as bio, and the other as poison). Anyways, it really depends on your PT. This gives you the THF the ability to support your local RDM:)

Oh, and please note: Poison does remove dia. I don't know about Status Poison (I use Poison Potions and Antidotes if I want to cure dia quickly). So, using Viper Bite when your Mob had dia cast on it may not be a good idea. I would recommend setting up different status effects macros, and choose them wisely for SC and effect benefits...

Just remember, The thf behind you is not giving you bunny ears^^

Can some ones please give a good discription on how to make this skill work to it's best? I must be doing something wrong if I can pull off 4 different kinda of skill chains and can't even get this to work =p
RE: I think I'm broken..
# Jan 03 2004 at 9:26 PM Rating: Default
I got trick attack and it took me awhile to figure out how it works. My big misconception was that it would do massive damage like sneak attack does. It doesn't, which was a little bit of a let down. It does add damage if you use it stacked with sneak attack and a weapon skill.

For example the best way to use it is as follows:
In a party you have a tank, and usually and secondary tank. Ideally you want the 2nd tank to provoke and get the mob to face him. The primary tank needs to stand behind the mob.

You then get behind the primary tank so that you too are behind the mob, but the tank is between you and the mob. Make a macro that uses sneak attack, wait 2 seconds, use trick attack, wait 2 seconds then use your weapon skill. (Ideally the weapon skill is the Viper bite skill associated with daggers) This will do a massive amount of damage and all the hate from it will be given to the primary tank.

For this to work, your party really needs to work with you, but if successful you can kill mobs fast.

The important thing to note, is that the trick attack only assigns the damage you do to the person your behind. So if you do a standard hit, it won't do much. But if you stack it with sneak attack and a weapon skill the tank will get so much hate he'll keep it until the mob dies, unless the mage uses something like benediction.

Hope this helps...
RE: I think I'm broken..
# Dec 06 2003 at 3:14 AM Rating: Default
i read somewhere that you need to be behind an ally... EX: YOU> Ally> <Enemy This would also stack with sneak attack if you and ally are behind... EX: YOU> Ally> Enemy> <Warrior
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 05 2003 at 11:52 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I don't believe this attack works as a WS Chain attack. When you attack with Trick attack, you fool the enemy into thinking it was someone else who attacked it, and thereby assign the damage you just did to the creatures anger list as someone else. Thereby raising someone else's anger value to the creature and making it turn on another party member. Now, as to who gets the assignment, not sure. I think it goes to the person who is first or second highest on the anger list other than you. As far as application, definately useful while your group is killing a dragon and the thing turns on you and smiles broadly.
