Do they have a micro for widescan o,O???
# Mar 26 2006 at 11:14 PM Rating: Decent
Is there a micro for widescan? Well, I know the answer to that question but it would be nice if they did then I would not have to check in many menu maps all the time.

Is there a wide scan cheat??
# Sep 17 2005 at 3:28 AM Rating: Decent
>.< Off the topic question.

On my different attempts at camping NM’s (Leaping Lizzy, ect..), I have come across players who seem to have a wide scan cheat. Here is what I mean. The player will be anon but have full THF AF gear on, be on the other side of the map, and run up to the MOB and provoke. So this is telling me there are THF / WAR, but how the hell did they see the MOB in the first place??

Any insight on the issue would be appreciated.

Thank you

Why is this skill so randomly referenced? I just got RNG and BST for this one function and I can't figure if it gets larger or stays the same. I definitely get a mixed response throughout this board as well as from other people. I want to know, if it grows, when does it grow (based on job). If you say doesn't, please post under this; if you say it does, please post under this. Hopefully, I can at least use democracy and my own tests.

Madrocks link pretty well sums it up but just to put perspective on the upgrading... As a lvl 1 bst you can probably see further in normal view than you can on WS, once you hit 20 it increases and finally becomes useful. (can anyone say 45+thf/bst NM machine?). Also I would like to agree w/ what a previous poster said about the fact that you can see the entire city on WS even at early lvls (not as bst... bst WS is worthless til 20). It has to do w/ the fact that the maps are not all the same scale, if you go to Giddeus and WS you will likely see almost the entire area, simply because the area is small similar to cities, and dissimilar to Sarutabaruta.

for BST this definately grows 100% sure.

it's kind of hard to say how big it is since different zones are different scales i think... but at 61BST i can scan right across lower jeuno. I think it grows about 1 grid every 15 or 20 levels.

are there any macros for this? something like :

/track Leaping Lizzie or /widescan or a combo :
/widescan track Leaping Lizzie ???

come on people anyway now that the drop from lizzie,VE and other NM are Rare/ex it won t hurt for theme will it ? lol
RE: MAcros?

No, there is no macro relating to widescan, especially one that tracks a NM for you without looking ><;

If you want even more of an edge than widescan gives you by itself, use /map then just hit enter a couple times to pull up widescan and start searching. This is a powerful ability by itself, if you use it quickly, you will have the definite edge.

Somewhere below someone mentioned widescan upgrades every 15 levels. So far I'm a 16RNG and my widescan is still the same as when I was Lv1.

From another thread I heard that additional widescan upgrades happen at Lv40 and Lv60. So I'm thinking that the first upgrade won't happen until Lv20. Just an FYI for those who want RNG just for the widescan for farming, like me.

my lvl 1 rng wide scan was actually greater than my lvl 1 bst wide scan!
Remote Scan
# Oct 27 2004 at 4:03 PM Rating: Default
I guess remote scan is an upgraded Wide Scan which you can obtain in the 80's or 90's.
My guess for this ability is you can choose ANY area on the map and scan for mobs! That explains the word "remote".
But of course this is just my guess.
RE: Remote Scan
# Nov 23 2004 at 6:37 AM Rating: Decent
hmmm.....no.... Remote scan is simply an ability u can use during widescan to scan a smalelr area in your current wide scan radius. IE, your widescan is so big you see the whol map, but only want to see where so and so spawns, remote scan it. I can do remote scan with my lvl 1 rng, so its definately not an upgraded skill, just a nice thing to have in the higher lvls when ur widescan is out of control.

(first, I'd like to refer you to RattyBatty's post below which I believe covers at least one of your questions)

To answer your questions:
1) BST has a smaller widescan area than RNG so the areas you've checked might only have three mobs in it. If you were to stand near 4+ mobs, you would see all 4+ of them.

2) Remote scan is a little wierd. When your widescan gets upgraded at later levels you start to see too many mobs and it can be a pain for two reasons: 1) scrolling through all the mobs, 2) sometimes you are only interested in seeing a certain area instead of half the map. So, you use remote scan to single out a smaller area and only show the mobs there. The catch is that you have to already be able to see the area in your normal widescan to use remote scan on it.

Idont use the rangers ability often, but i usually sub it when huntings rams, axe beaks or elementals.

As all of u know these creatures are heavily hunted and finding them is more difficult for me then killing as a rdm44/rng8. Ok I cant subsitute thf for drops, but I spend less time searching and more time killing the mobs alowing me to get more drops then i would have with thf. Since rams and elementals drop almost everytime, i only have to keep killing beaks like crazy... ooooh does cockatrice meats are expensive, even for a level 48 cook ^^

Duration really isn't relevant for this ability. You either see it as unlimited, since you can keep the map open as long as you want; or instant, since the map doesn't refresh and only snapshots where things are at the moment you open the map.

I suppose another point of view would be that it's the length of time that a mob exists. For example, I step out of Selbina and scan; to my surprise, the Emp itself is on the map, but from Selbina I'll never beat the rush, so I leave the map up and kill time counting Gobs or something... then a sandstorm starts and I want to scout for earth elementals, so I choose to track the Emp for kicks, and close the map. Well, by now the Emp is dead, meaning that my map was obviously too old. Since there are now earth elementals out, it became too old when the sandstorm started... or did it become too old when the Emp died? Or when that Gob died? Or the Pugil? You see the problem. While I'd personally lean more towards "Instant", how the map functions is quite different from an instant effect like a Cure or being hit by Aero, but it's not on par with "Mighty Strikes" either.

Being a Level 21 BeastMaster I use widescan for everything and every mob. It works great for when we are fighting one particular mob in an area (such as Bubu) and if there are mobs such as gobs around that would agro.

I am really loving this ability to be able to find one kind of mob, avoid agro and pull it back to camp. Thanks to widescan and a patient mentor and Duo Partner in Sittingbull we were able to get to Level 21 last night (Thursday) in just a few short and fun hours.

Ok seems of all the people I talk to, I'm the only one that knows widescan inside and out. So here's the downlow of it for anyone with questions!

What is widescan? :
Widescan is a unique ability for BST and RNG jobs that allows you to see all targets in an area around you. This area gets larger every certain ammount of LVL's, and has some interesting features!

Accessing Widescan :
You get this ability at lv 1 BST and RNG. Simply go to your MAP menu, you will see a new "Widescan" button now appears under the "Markers" button! Clicking this will bring up a list of every SINGLE monster in your Widescan's range, and show their locations with little red dots on the map.

Then scrolling to each monster on the list will display crosshairs on the map telling you exactly which red dot is that specific monster.

(i said every "SINGLE" monster because if there are 4 mandragoras in your range, "Mandragora" will appear in the list 4 times)

Using Tracking :
So now you can see some monsters in your area!
"Ok, i want to be pointed to this one Mandragora"
Once you have that Mandragora highlighted on the list, hitting enter will have the option to "Track" it! After chosing this and exiting the map menu, you will see a small blue arrow on your compas pointing you in the direction of that one Mandragora.

Why is this useful? Well, instead of sitting there and trying to figure out "Ok where am i on this map? and which way is that beast compared to me?" you can just have the compas point you to it!

This becomes most handy when you're in a hurry (like hunting NM's or in a big fight) and don't have the time to figure out which way it is. With practice you can spot a beast, stick a track on it, and get to it in no time!

Remote Scan! The big mystery!!! :
Inside the Widescan interface is an unexplained sub-option called "Remote Scan". I must admit even I couldn't figure this one out for a long time! But here's why most people can't: You really don't use this until much later!

Imagine, by the time you're lv 60, your widescan area will be GIGANTIC *drool* ... but wait! That's an awful lot of monsters on your list now! What if you're only interested in the beasts around this one tree? Remote Scan to the rescue!

Remote Scan simply focuses-in on a smaller circular area anywhere you choose within your widescan range, And only displays what's in that small area. Simple!

Range and map observations:
Describing widescan range can be tricky. The problem is that maps vary widely in size and grid measure. However in my many years as BST i have made the following observations :

Grid-Measures (How much land one grid square covers) seem to be split into 3 groups:
-Outdoor maps : By far the most common grid-size you'll see
-Dungeon maps : 1 grid square covers a smaller area
-Towns : 1 grid square covers a very small area.

Towns use very small grid squares because there are so many NPCs and buildings one may need to find in any given part of town. Makeing every grid square cover a smaller area, you can say go "Go to the NPC at H-7" and be able to find it quickly within the small area of that square.

Maps will always SEEM to share the same grid measure, but that's because the map drawing is either scaled smaller or larger, rather than make the grid overtop smaller or larger. Here's a good comparison :
Town map
Bibiki Bay
Now, anyone who's been in Bibiki bay will tell you that walking from the zoneline to the first narrow passage to the west (2 grid squares) is a heck of a lot further than walking from one end of the Sandy Auction House area to the other (3 grid squares)

Clearly demonstrating that one square = a different distance in both these maps. So although your range seems to grow/shrink in squares on different maps, it in fact is covering the same walking distance.

Now that that's out of the way, Widescan range. Let's use the outdoors map grid as the example.
Widescan Range
Lvl 1-20 : A circle that fits within 1 Square
Lvl 20-40: A circle thats fits within 1.7x1.7 Squares (ish)
Lvl 40-60: A circle thats fits within 2x2 Squares
Lvl 60 + : A circle thats fits within 3x3 Squares
There are decimals involved in the growth, because it grows 4 times yet adds up to 3 squares in the end. I threw the decimal at upgrade 2 because it is more than 1 square yet not quite 2x2 yet at that lvl.
*Note : This is the BST range, RNG has a larger range*

Widescan Does' and Doesn't's :

-Widescan DOESN'T automatically refresh, you must exit the map and reload for an updated view
-Widescan DOESN'T automatically set up tracking on one species of beast, Tracking is set up manually for every single target.
-Widescan DOESN'T track more than one target at once
-Widescan DOESN'T show any details on targets other than the name, and location on the map
-Widescan DOESN'T find Treasure chests, Mining points, Logging points, "???"'s ect....

-Widescan DOES grow : every 20 levels
-Widescan DOES show NotoriousMonsters, any monster or NPC character
-Widescan DOES still work with BST or RNG as a subjob!
-Widescan DOES work in town, displaying all NPC's in range
-Widescan DOES work even if you don't have an area's map yet!
-Widescan DOES kick a$$!

That's it! Hope I helped a lot of people out today!

I've been using my RNG for sometime now but I really only use widescan when I'm solo'n, I'm getting ready to head for Kazham and as some of you may know, you really don't have the luxury of playin inside the map in the 2 jungles, could someone plz post something more detailed about the various macros I could use to help me pull better without leaving myself open for Gobbo's.

thx

I have a question...in the Shadowbind thread I see people speaking of a macro:
/ja "Shadowbind" <scan>
or something like that. Is it possible to be locked onto something with Track, and be able to shoot at it, etc, even if you can't see it? This would be so useful for NMs....

The question was about Widescan appearing to change size in cities.

This is something that I hear people wondering about all the time. And the answer is actually very simple. It's merely that cities are much smaller than other areas, as shall we say San d'Oria is far smaller than the La Theine Plateau, but are represented on a different scale on the map to make them easier to read. the latitude and longitude lines on the in-game maps are little indication of actual distance.

Please change the info on the site....It has no reuse time. It is NOT like any other job ability in that you access it through your map screen. You get it at level one. It grow every 20 levels. At level 40...mine is friggin HUGE, I can stand in any corner of a city's map and cover the entire city. Outdoors it has about a 2-square radius in most locations.

Okay, here's the deal with Wide scan:
-It does not sure up in any skill list.
-You can see monsters and NPCs
-You can NOT see tresure chests, or PCs
-Its range increases with level
-I believe it allows you to see all the npcs in a town, regardless if they are in your normal range. It could be the case that it is simply a greatly expanded range.
-There is no reuse time
-The map is still not real-time (ie, you can't just put up wide scan and wait for Leaping Lizzard to show up on the the list.
-Wide scan has two options:
1. Track - once you select a monster from the list, and then select track, there will be a radar pointer the same way there normally is when someone calls for help. The name of the monster you are tracking will also appear next to your radar.
2. Remote scan - this ONLY applies to an area within your tracking range. What it does is selects only the mobs that are within the radius of the circle. You can move the circle around the map, and thus select a specific area in your range in order to see what is in that immediate area. At first, this does not sound useful, however, by the time you get to Qufim Island, your wide scan picks up 3/4 of the mobs in the entire area. Thus, it is usefull to select, say, the area around the lack in Qufim, when your party is hunting there. This helps filter mobs that are too far away to pull.

You get scan at lvl 1, and nothing about it changes no matter what lvl you are. I don't know if it shows treasure chests. It also doesn't have a reuse time.
