Historical Information

In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was the first king of Corinth described as being the craftiest of men due to notoriously killing guests and travelers as a means of maintaining a dominant position in society. He overstepped his boundaries as a mortal by viewing himself a close enough peer to the gods that he went as far as divulging secrets he had learned about Zeus, king of the gods, to other gods, such as telling the river god Asopus where Zeus had hidden his daughter, Aegina.

Zeus ordered Thanatos to forever chain Sisyphus within Tartarus for his actions, though he managed to trick Thanatos into shackling himself, which brought chaos in the living world because no mortal could die with Thanatos imprisoned. The god of war Ares, annoyed that battle had lost its luster due to no one being able to die, freed Thanatos and turned Sisyphus over to him.

Before his death, Sisyphus commanded his wife to throw his naked body into the public square as a testament to her devotion to him. Using this action to his advantage, when he arrived in Hades, he complained to the goddess Persephone that he deserved to return to the living world so as to scold his wife for not burying him as a loving wife should. When his spirit was sent to the living world to punish his wife, Sisyphus instead refused to return to Tartarus, and was forcibly dragged back by the god Hermes.

For his hubristic attitude, Sisyphus was condemped to an eternity of repeating the same task over and over again, as Zeus ordered that Sisyphus was to push a giant boulder up a steep hill, only for it to roll back down the hill just before he reached the top, forcing him to start again.
