Ever think of this? 'Back to the Basics' sound familar?
# Sep 12 2009 at 5:52 PM Rating: Decent
I'm... curious about this one. I've heard rumors and all sorts of theories. I've watched most of the video footage available. I see one thing quite common.

Everything being used is advanced tactics.

Not so much the simple stuff. Honestly, think about it. 'Principles' are often a fancy way of refering to basics. All the 'advanced' tactics are based on the basic ones you learn early on in the game. A different way of explaining it? I'll put it like I did to someone who was the target of my rant about the basics of fighting and using thier past in the martial arts to link it... (They had never played the game)

You know using the advanced attacks and blocks can often your rear handed to you, right? You do something too fancy at the wrong time and you're going to get your *** kicked. Point blank. But, if you stick to the basics, and just going for a straight beating instead of trying some fancy crap, you often times win, right? My point made.

Get the picture? This tid-bit occured to me when I realized my original theory reflected a basic party set up in a few ways. Namely, this...

Jobs - Basic Party/Alliance
Mages - 2/6
DDs and Defenders - 2/6
Tank(s) and Other - 2/6

(Alright, so that little graph list sucks royally but whatever, it gets my point across hopefully.)
That being said, the original idea that, quite literally, popped into my head as I woke up, was this...

Job - # of
(group 1)
Thief - 4
Dancer - 2
(group 2)
Samurai - 3
Paladin - 3
(group 3)
Red Mage - 2
White Mage - 2
Black Mage - 2

Simple. In theory, very effective. I have never fought AV. I have read accounts on the battles and read all sorts of off the wall stratagies. My little idea? (Discussed this with my LS leader and another 75...)

Keep one of each of the three mages on each side of the alliance; one RDM, BLM, and WHM on each end, but keep their distance, like any good non-melee mage should. 2 THFs SATA off the DNC- a self sustaining class if geared right and with a capable player behind the controls- to grab the hate quickly, and WS to add a bit more damage and hate later on, and keep it with the DNCs, SAMs, PLDs, and BLM. Keep the hate on one end of the alliance while the other builds TP through regular auto-attacks and Meditate or rests for mp. Then, when one side is ready to 'open the gates to hell', as I mentally refered to it, and the other has taken enough of a beating, switch it. The other 2 THFs SATA off the second DNC, which should be BEHIND AV and directly across from the other, and the SAMs and PLDs let loose Provoke and WSs, the BLM start spamming spells and whatever else they need to in order to get the hate on their side and keep it. The WHM on the first side focus on curing their half of the alliance, RDM help them if MP permits. RDM should be keeping buffs up and back-up healing in this set up. WHM on the second side should be curing as you go along, making sure no one dies while side 1 recovers and then rinse and repeat this pattern until you see '(insert player name) defeats Absolute Virtue' roll across your log. Keep your buffs up, your eyes open, 2 hour only when needed to make sure you survive and make use of what your class gives you. Don't try some fancy 'trade this and this' or 'this and this weakens him if you wear it/defeat it'. Treat it like what it is, a regular mob on steroids...

</end rant>

Long time fight

As ive said before... 99% of the FFXI community will disagree with me on this deliberation...and thats perfectly fine. it makes my point all the more valid IF my wish were to come true. the 1% of FFXI will understand what im talking about, but for the rest of you... work with me to understand this. (not agree, i know no one will agree) There are events in the game that "seperate the chumps from the champs", right? EXAMPLES: sky, sea, HNMs, ZNMs, etc, etc. ok, that much is obvious. within that category of champs, there are things that happen that seperate the champs from the super elite champs. then inside the super elite champ category there is even more prestigious stuff to set you apart from the rest. now continue that chain for a little while and eventually you have a very very difficult fight on your hands. at this point, a fight length of that magnitude is setting you one step up from the super ultimate mega awesome champs of the galaxy. if/when u finally win that fight, you are the ONLY 18ish people in the EARTH WORLD to have EVER beat this mob, AND wear the gear. THAT, my friends, is what that 1% wants. THAT is what FFXI needs at least ONE NM to be like.

W...T...F... FFXI HAS BENT TO THE WILL OF THE WUSSIES ENOUGH!!! DYNAMIS, EINHERJAR, ZNM, COP!!!! YOU CANT TAKE ABSOLUTE VIRTUE FROM US!!! SE HAS GOT TO LEAVE THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE!! I REALIZE THAT EVEN WITH W/E CHANGES THEY MAKE TO ABSOLUTE VIRTUE, HE WILL STILL BE SUPER CRAZY TOUGH AND WHATNOT... BUT HONESTLY, KEEP HIM AS DIFFICULT AS HE IS! 18 HOUR FIGHT IS WHAT WE NEED! (and everyone who says "nah, he's too difficult, lower him. he's too hard. it's not fair" they can all go to hell cuz obviously, AV is not their thing.

18+HR fight!? Some people have a life outside FFXI.
Considering AV has been in the game for years... and the vast majority of the fanbase still can't figure out how to beat this F****R -Even after SE revealed 'hints' on how to beat it. AV should be adjusted from being Impossible, to EXTREMELY challenging.

but hey if you really want to spend 18+HRs of your life 'Attempting' to defeat AV. Go right ahead. What will likely happen(if your successful)get 17hrs into the fight, then AV does Manafont/Meteor. --Fight over.

To quote... "Considering AV has been in the game for years... and the vast majority of the fanbase still can't figure out how to beat this F****R -Even after SE revealed 'hints' on how to beat it." This fact will make a legitimate kill all the more rare and exceptional... there are some of us who were looking forward to accepting this challenge. (throwing kraken club drks (while the gear and the sheer number of them is awesome and expensive and sexy) is not very impressive. now, "hey we killed Absolute Virtue" "...so...? my 2 year old nephew killed him too..."

I do indeed see and understand what you mean, Ninjainferno... however, this fact cannot be denied: all gear that is considered "rare" (as in, there arent that many of them) have a few brothers and sisters. by this, i mean that there are a few of each piece that we consider rare in existance. for the very very very very very few of us who would actually be willing to dedicate so much as 18 hours towards a fight for some stupendous gear, the reward of receiving a piece of gear that may only exist in one place (you) is the ultimate pay off. like i always say, an 18 hour fight (or any fight of that ridiculous length) would not be for everyone. i can guarantee there are only a few ppl per server who are actually up for the challenge. so for those select few, FFXI needs something reeeealy long and ardurous for them. basically, im looking for something that when it is beaten, those ppls names will go into history as the only ppl to have done such a thing... LITERALLY the ONLY ppl to have done it.

I agree. The 18 hour fight is meaningful. Obviously, AV ungimped is beatable, but it's just a mob sittin on a far away map corner somewhere. Just because some people don't want to spend 18 hours fighting it just to die, and attempt that 18 hour fight dozens of times before getting an incredibly awesome item and the only one of its kind, doesn't mean AV should be gimped.
"Regarding Notorious Monsters"
# Dec 05 2008 at 11:30 AM Rating: Decent
No, the fight is not meaningful. Nor is it alright. When players have had 4 years to beat thier head on this guy and none of us can understand the mechanics, something is wrong. He's never been legitimately killed. Only through bugs, exploits, and mechanics abuse.

Those of you saying it's for the be-all-end-all group, you've never actually fought him have you? I have. ***** AV, ***** him in his gay ***. AV and PW are not good NM design. PW is at least interesting in concept if they'd tone down the sheer number of forms and make it only do X amount of them, like 1 random one from each group, then the fight. So far there is no bragging rights in AV because there is no skill involved. FFXI doesn't even require a huge abundance of skill to play, and this fight doesn't even tap any of it.

This fight and PW were the whole reason I bailed after so much time invested on FFXI, it's just not worth doing anymore. SE has the worst customer relations known to man, and constantly spits in the face of it's playerbase. I hate to say it, but at least Blizzard understands thier users and knows what encounter design is.

Before the AV was lowered, he was beaten before.
AV has been beaten with and without the wall glitch by Apathy.

Also, if you wanna play 18+ hours of fighting, try Pandemonium Warden, go have fun

It just seems to me the Weapons dropped by the Jailers are the key to victory against AV. Think about it for a sec... those weapons are 100% drops, where else in the game are NM's (that are in relation to High/pop NM's) that have 100% drop rate?

Is it possible that the "principles" AV refers to are the Weapons (Virtues)? (Temperence, Love, Faith etc...)
Is it possible that players need to USE those weapons against AV (AV: Show me...)
Is it possible that SE's hint via the video clip was showing us that our 2hrs are not the "principles" we are driven by, maybe they were just dumping thier 2hrs? (the video never really showed anyone effectively using those 2hrs)

I know this is a speculation, but hey to me it seems like a good path to start on. I doubt anyone has actually even used ALL of those weapons on AV (the rod comes to mind cause no Mage able to use it technically melees)

One thought is maybe there needs to be a succession in use, i.e. the first weapon used (with a WS or something) in conjunction to the first virtue recieved, and so on.
Did anyone ever figure this out?

Bored a few days ago I thought I'd take another good look at the video maybe to see if things were missed during the hype of it.

We know how to stop the regen kill JoL pets and cast right nuke on right right day.(I remember someone saying casting wrong day nuke may trigger Medusa Javelin, never confirmed myself though)

I noticed 2 things

1) Everyone says the 2 hours aren't predictable yet somehow one Paladin always got Invincible off before AV inta-casted. So I took a look at fight without paying much attention to log and everytime AV was about to 2hour he caused an AOE sandwhirlwind animation on the ground, before the use of the 2 hour was even announced. (Save the first Invincible which I am guessing he mistaked stoneskin for the whirlwind)

2) In all the chains 2hour chains except the last (it might have something to do with call wyvern though sinc eit doesnt count as a 2hour for us anymore). They always Tried to Sandwich i know that sounds strange but during the SOul Voice the 2 bards Soul Voiced at the end. Same with Chainspell. Call Wyvern they did use it but the others to use 2 hour were slow for some reason and weren't caught in the sandwich.

It's just a thought but could a Sandwich be the key to AV -.-

I just started playing again I cant actually test this myself since I deleted my character when i had "quit".

From the looks of the video i don't think its av reseting people's 2hrs i think its more along the lines if someone's 2hr is up then AV can also use 2hr whenever it wants. I belive thats why when av used a 2hr they all spamed theirs so he couldn't use 2hr again for another 2 hours.

Ok. I honestly kinda don't think that he resets 2hr. If you look at the day on the clock thing or whatever you want to call it, the day has changed EACH time they zoomed in on the 2 hours. Now I don't know if all those days were 2 apart which would allow the time needed for 2 hours to cool down or not. And even if they had that would mean it was a 6 hour fight, so maybe he does reset 2 hours. And we don't even know for sure if that was the same fight in each of the videos. I noticed he never Meteored when he chainspelled. Maybe The 2 hours prevent him from using certain things? I am just rambling. But at this point I have heard no testimonies about personal accounts after the Video release. If anyone has some posting them would be great.

2 Hours Restored Theory
# Feb 13 2008 at 10:54 PM Rating: Default
I'm not sure if it actually stops his 2hour. But in the video it does show that somehow they are getting their 2hour back. So rationally if you are fighting a mob that reduces your 2hour ability timer to 0, the fight would go like this.

Engage Mob -
Burn all 2hours -
Mob uses 2hour, restoring everyones -
Burn all 2hours again-
repeat.

I think it's logical, but holy crap I can't believe that after all this time no one has noticed they get their 2hours back when he uses his. I guess in the heat of battle you're not really paying attention.

Edit: As for the guy who used Call Wyvern. Perhaps that's because AV was programmed when Call Wyvern was the 2hour, and they just never adjusted it.

Any thought that maybe when he 2hrs and you 2hr after him it might make it so he can't use the other 2hrs and maybe he does something that's AoE that give back the ability to use 2hrs that works on him and "us"? Just a random thought.

All that video really keyed in was the use of 2 hours used when AV used one that I could see. The 2nd close up of the text window highlights:

-----------------------------
Elmaulle uses Invincible
Absolute Virtue uses Soul Voice**
Basu uses Benediction
Popumyonmapu uses Manafont
Roopelope uses Benediction
Iws uses Manafont
Dreamrainbow uses Meikyo Shisui
Astri uses Call Wyvern (not current 2 hour but used to be)
Ruriri uses Benediction
Rasopomosopo uses Astral Flow
Sibigobi uses Manafont
Oruu uses Manafont
Hupapa uses Soul Voice
Hina uses Soul Voice
Yanono uses Blood Weapon
Chakiki uses Chainspell
Houjuhkye uses Soul Voice
----------------------------

All told that is 16 2 Hour abilities burned pretty much simultaneously.
What was interesting is that it seems each time AV used a 2 Hour, everyone that had previously used one was then able to use theirs again. Does AV instantly recharge your abilities? I say this because Popumyonmapu uses Manafont 3 times in the space of about 3 minutes, directly after AV uses his.

Anyways, that's my take on the video. I'm sure it's been pointed out elsewhere but figured I'd post it here hehe.

2 Hours?
# Feb 14 2008 at 6:41 PM Rating: Decent
Yes this does have to do with 2 hours but im not very convinced that Popumyonmapu used manafont 3 times in 3 minutes. Because if you look at the clock just above the chat log it is a different day all 3 times and im not sure about the times because they are kinda fuzzy. At the fan festival they said even with these hints he is still supposed to be the hardest mob in the game. Take jourmungand for example. this mob takes a couple of hours to kill. if AV is stronger even with the hints it's still gonna be a long fight.

Hence I am suggesting that maybe his 2 hour abilities are locked by the people using theirs. therefore preventing chainspell manafont meteor and alliance wipes.

I think its funny, the first people to find the wall glitch were from remora (apathy mind you). And the lock glitch was also discovered on remora. Don't know who found that but it is pretty funny seeing people claim they they beat him fair and square with the lock glitch. Im sorry but any mob in the game can be beaten if it has only physical attacks at its disposal.

MB?
# Aug 16 2007 at 11:02 AM Rating: Decent
Yes they fixed the wall trick some time ago, and to my knowledge people havn't beaten him since.

But on to my question at hand. I know it's probably not likely and more than likely has been tried but, has anyone ever tried MBing enfeebles on AV? Like sleep, gravity, etc. Who knows maybe SE wanted to try to bring MB's back on a different scale. Just a thought though. I'd like to know if it's been tried as I have no experience with AV myself, its just a curious topic for me. lol who knows maybe there's just some really stupid trick that you normally wouldn't think of (like Brigandish Weap and the bucaneer knife) Not probable though.

Or how about using DRG's? Maybe AV gets intimidated by Ancient Circle XD. Again unlikely but worth a shot if it hasnt been tried. (Again it probably has)
