Summary

Find a coffer key in Garlaige Citadel and unlock a treasure coffer to obtain your Temple Crown.

Walkthrough

Before starting this quest, you must first activate the quest Borghertz's Striking Hands. You must also have completed Ghosts of the Past - MNK AF1.

First, you need a Garlaige Coffer Key from Garlaige Citadel. Keys drop from vault weapons, over weapons, Hellmines, Magic Jugs, Fallen Mages and Fallen Majors.

After obtaining a key, find a treasure coffer. Treasure coffers spawn behind Banishing Gate #3 at G-6, I-5 and I-7. Behind Banishing Gate #2, coffers spawn at G-8, H-8 and I-7.

Trade your key to the coffer to receive your Temple Crown.

Getting To Your Coffer - Solo Style

If you already managed to acquire your key, and are just having difficulty getting enough people to get through all those banishing gates, there's an alternate method to getting to the all the coffer spawn areas in G.C. solo now. See link to post in the thread for this AF quest at

This is a really late reply, and I'm sure you've already figured it out. Going to post this really quickly anyway since I'm sure others will come here with the same question.

You have to *start* the AF2 quest before Guslam will give you his AF hands quest.

I'm also positive that you don't have to have Borghertz's Striking Hands quest to open AF coffers. I have several sets of incomplete AF in my storage that are only missing the hands quest...which I never activate because you can't cancel it without clearing memories. =P You do need the AF2 quest triggered for every job to open coffer AF, however.

I suppose there's a small chance that monk is different than other jobs and requires AF hands quest flagged to get other coffer AF, but I kind of doubt it. >.> I'll go test it in Beadeaux later today if time permits.

Update: Opened the coffer this morning with AF2 quest flagged but no Borghertz's Striking Hands quest, so apparently it holds true to all pre-expansion AF. So if possible this guide needs to be changed a little. I'm sure a lot of people would like to ignore the AF hands quest for other jobs, and that information is misleading.

my in game fiance got his gloves but gulsam wont give him the next quest>< im a red mage and didnt need a quest for my coffer here .. just got the key found the coffer and i was done, what with the monk af quest thing... we want to get his af done so he can get married in his full af in game ^^ any info appreciated

Um... You dont need to "activate" this quest.

As with all AF Coffers, you simply have to open the AF Hands quest (or completed it) then go and get key/open coffer as the job for the AF you are after.

Guslam will talk about the Hands because that is the only quest he starts.

I was just goofin off in Garlaige Citadel, and hooked up with a 75NIN and 66WHM. We were just chatting and slaughtering, and up pops a Coffer Key! Well, they didn't need it, so my 53MNK will make good use of it. Once I find out exactly when I can check the coffer for the Crown......Do I need to initiate every single quest? for each piece? or once I finish AF1 Beat Cesti, can I actually do all others in any order?

Alright... if you have Beat Cesti complete thats only half... if you have a quest for guslam previous like RDM AF gloves or WHM or something uncompleted... Then go do it... then talk to guslam... once you have "Bortgetsz Striking Hands" flagged in your Quest Log Jeuno you have the other half of the requirement and go get your Crown...

Coffer from Hell?
# Oct 02 2005 at 12:19 AM Rating: Decent
Im still waiting on this Coffer. It sounds annoying as hell but I know how tough AF2 was and how much !F3 will suck so I can only imagine this to be easier.
I got the key at 48 from a pt of high levels giving them away [I actually didnt even know if my job had a coffer in GC]
This coffer sucks!
# Aug 03 2005 at 9:59 PM Rating: Decent
This is bs! I've tried for this coffer twice, both ending with the pt bailing and me dead with no AF. On my recent attempt, I thought the pt was going to /random to see who gets to open it, but the pld opens it, then says he found it. Then he gets aggro, dies, hps, and finally disbands. After that, his friend warps out and disbands. And to top it off, the blm finds it, opens it, and warps out after 10 minutes of "trying" to help me get mine. So I use the last of my powders, and pretty much get stuck camping 1 spawn point. A beetle comes all the way up the stairs and aggros, I run, I die, and a whm in full af runs by and examines me, but doesn't cast Raise. I like FFXI and have made some cool friends, but this coffer has me actually contemplating quiting the game.

This key is an exceptionally fun and easy one to get for Monks, in my opinion. It drops off of the Fallen (skeletons) deep in Garlaige Citadel, and jobs who require this coffer are MNK, PLD, RDM, WHM, and BLM - which just happens to be an ideal bones party setup. Try to put together a coffer key / experience points party with 2 Monks and one of each of the above jobs, because Fallen are prime experience from about levels 52-55. With a little luck you'll walk out of Garlaige with one key each and a hell of a lot of experience points, because the drop rate is good and this is one of the earliest opportunities to truly understand the power of a bones party.

Finding the coffer is a different matter. As mentioned in the description above, all spawn points are behind the second and third banishing gates. You can see a map here. If you manage to put together a party of 4 to get through these, bring along a lot of silent oils and prism powders, because you won't be able to rely on casters down here (prism powders behind the second gate, silent oils everywhere else). Some people choose to camp out near the zoneline to Sauromugue Champaign behind the third banishing gate because that's the safest option, but there are actually more coffer spawns behind the second gate. So long as you bring a fallout-shelter supply of prism powders, you should be quite comfortable back here for an indefinite period of time. My group of 5 managed to get all 5 spawns in a row behind this gate over a period of several hours (respawn time on coffers is 30 real-life minutes). You may have to camp out for days, or you may have to make several attempts, or you may sneak past another group doing it and get the coffer in five minutes. Basically, it's a matter of luck. On the plus side, nothing feels better than seeing that "Treasure Coffer" appear on your targeting window, except for actually opening it.

Enjoy your Temple Crown, because it is arguably the most useful piece in the Monk AF set, and certainly one of the best AF pieces in the game. Focus Enhancement simply cannot be beat, and it doesn't hurt that it's a pretty sexy looking piece of gear.
