Battle Notes

In order to begin this quest you must first talk to Zebada at (F-12) in Uleguerand Range. He will give you a Rare/Ex item called a Cotton Pouch. Slide down at (E-9) and enter the cave at (F-8) and trade the Cotton Pouch to the Chamnaet Spring to get another Rare/Ex item called Chamnaet Ice. Go back to Zebada and trade it to him and he will give you the key item: Zephyr Fan. This is the item needed to enter the battle and everyone in the party must have it to participate.

Head to Bearclaw Pinnacle and prepare to enter. When you are ready, choose the battle Holy Cow. There is no cap on this fight, you have 30 minutes to win, and a max of 6 people can enter the battlefield.

You will fight a NM Buffalo named Apis. Defeat him and you will be rewarded with 4,000 Experience points and an item.

Attempt 1 with BLM/RDM and RDM/BLM

Gravity stuck 100% but it's duration was random. It wore once before recast was up and killed us.

Bind was rediculously random. Seems to build resistance quick and duration became total garbage.

Nuke damage was great when he wasnt immune but his abbility to hit hella hard and blink's hardcore failage lead to many deaths and no win.

This ENM is not as easy to solo or duo as some people may be posting. If he decides that he just wants to resist the sh*t out of binds its gonna end bad fast.

BTW this was with 317 enfeebling, hq ice staff, nq wind, 1 magic acc merit in each element and lights day.

Soloable by what jobs?
# Dec 09 2007 at 11:32 AM Rating: Decent
Several jobs can solo this ENM.

RDM/NIN for one, NIN/WHM for another using MP Drain Weapon skill.

What other jobs could possibly solo this. I was thinking about THF/NIN using Bloody+Blind Bolts/ Paralyze Arrows. Or maybe a BLM/RDM using Gravity kite method. Possibly a WHM/NIN with capped haste/stoneskin gear? I just want to know the possibilities since I do not have RDM or NIN at 75.

I just tried to solo this as rdm/blm.

I went in, popped Chainspell, gravity and bind, and proceeded to nuke.

0 damage

0 damage

0 damage

0 damage

Dispel: Dispel has no effect

WTF!!!

I recall from the video I saw that nukes randomly seemed to do 0 damage in the chat log. Apparantly there is a shift in how he can be hurt every time he uses his 2hour. (I think, not sure exactly what causes this.)

Also note that unlike Bionic Bug, you cannot use sleep spells in this fight-- it's bind and gravity all the way. Also knowing this, feel free to use as many DoTs as you can. It probably helps to have crimson legs.

yes he has two forms, and he starts with magic immunity...you know hes out of that form wen he does the standard mob 2hr animation
Just attempted to solo, RDM75/NIN37

okay, basically i went in buffed up ate a melon pie and rested to full...
i had about 800MP and ran in, cast poison 2 to pull then bound him, i ran around the arena and waited there for bind to wear. then i cast Blizzard 3 to test his resistance...and it hit for 221, had him at about 94% at this point.
so now bind is gone, i rebind and head up the tunnel opposite of the zone out.
waiting for bind to wear this time , i do the same thing, and this time bliz hits hard for 446. now i gravity and kikte him to the wind, currentlly down to about 88% im trying to keep enfeebles and poison on. by now he has used 2HR animation a few times but i havent noticed any difference except for the 3 binds that got resisted. i had to use gravity during these points which made it very easy to run away from him and nuke -> Bind when he got in range.

long story short i got him to 74% and died...if anyone can give me a good, hardcore strategy that can be done with goodish RDM gear, i'd be interested.
next week im going to attempt to duo with a BRD75 friend and hopefully INT etudes will help.

OK we won this a few nights ago. If you have someone who knows their way up the mountain it super easy.. just takes some time. Remember to watch out for the true sight mobs.. As far as the battle goes.. this is what we took .. melee are basically useless here as I am a 75 war with merits and did a mighty strikes rampage for a grand total of 204 dmg with sole sushi. Our party setup was (all 75) nin war blm blm rdm whm beyond frickin simple and easy... u will not win this fight if u dont have a rdm.. ele seal grav the buffalo then nuke the hell out of it while nin tries to kite, but really dont matter cuz with grav on it slow as anything. rdm keeps grav and bind on as much as possible and it is super easy.. we won in like 5 minutes.. of course we got crap for drop but did get 4k exp.. as far as sliding down the slopes use the two videos that are posted and it is beyond simple and easy. anyone who misses the first drop needs to go play spyro the dragon. Second drop is a bit harder because u have no landmark to aim for but still beyond easy and as always if one person with tractor makes it just get tractored up and take r whatever. hope this helps.. again watch the two videos posted above over and over and over until u got it down pat cuz u gotta get to the slope, get your bearings, then head down as bombs and sight buffalos are right by where you drop.

I put this under Apis' listing, but not only is a pretty rad pic, but it's also what his animation looks like (granted it's a screenshot) when he switches immunities.

This ENM can be trioed by 2 NINs and a BRD. I have done it twice now and oe with a WHM to help with the cures.

I have yet to see a Gigant Mantle drop but last night, we got two Psilos Mantle drop. Which I found quite rare because cannotlinkto states that only one can drop.
Bonnacon's brother!! lol

Yeah we went night and the comedy watching people climb the mountain 2-3x's was classic... I suggest of somebody in your group preferably your whm knows how to get up let them solo to the drop spot then tractor the dead bodies (yes dying is invovled, but makes it only one death and not numerous depending on how good your pt is... for sheer time and to limit death i suggest this as poeple will end up dying and the amount to prep time will be ridiculously long just for key item...

Got Cassie Lumber... BOOO!!!

Um.. just curious but you sure you saw a vid of that?? The buf does invincible like a few times i don't, we had 2x nin/war, thf, smn, whm, and another melee...

1st time doing it the invincible scared us for a sec thinking OMG "0's".. hope this isn't the trick of this ENM.. lmao

Anywasy it wore back to killing it... then he did another one LOL... i can't see anyone solo this in 14mins due to that but anything is possible i guess...

I just saw the same vid and it is entirely possible.

Basically the RDM made sure Gravity was on all the time and used Bind a lot. He chainspelled and used Thunder3 (I think) and just kited while casting. That took the NM down to about 50% then he just slowly chipped away at it for the next 10 minutes. His clear time was 15:49.

The same guy, Avesta, has soloed a bunch of NMs, BCs and ENMs. There's a lot of videos of him out there

Avesta is insane. I've seen some of his videos. As one person on the RDM forums recently pointed out, "Avesta did it" does not mean "this is soloable by a normal human being."

Here is a link to his videos. Avesta is JP, so you kinda gotta figure out from the animations and sounds what he's doing. Some of the things he's tried I would not attempt without his gear, which includes Crimson Cuisses that give him a significant edge in kiting.

well I have one thing to say about the this buffalo...easy as hell enm, climb sucks hard. Biggest problem is that unfortunately the coveted gigant mantle is not a 100% drop...which sucks. I have done it and won the battle but no drop...on our trip up we made about 20k each since R3 is worth about 10 cents now, we got some lame *** bow and some strange piece of wood that was worth the most at 100k. More or less this ended up being a gross waste of time. Granted if you get the good drop it will be well worth the trip. I for one need this mantle for god fights like kirin being a taru pld and all.
Soloable
# Aug 13 2005 at 1:50 PM Rating: Decent
This ENM is soloable, I've seen a video of a 75rdm/nin do it. He was JP, and had really uber gear. Full AF2, Crimson Legs, Dalmatica, and probably the rest of Zenith and Crimson sets. Took him about 14 minutes.

Requirements: I personally wouldn't take anyone under 74 to this fight. Also, Uleguerand is the new nightmare of safe traversal, a stack each of powder/oil is MANDATORY (lots of magic aggro in the form of white bombs and elementals), and even then you are not safe from the true sight taurus mobs along the way and even less so from the very real possibility of Jormungand being up and in your way.

Quest Starter: Zebada (Uleguerand Range F-12). Big nekkid galka. Hard to miss. He asks you to bring him some ice taken from deep within the caverns of Uleguerand Range. He will give you a sack in which to collect the ice.

Climb up to the now famous cliffs-o-doom at (E-9) and fall off the WESTERN FACE, aiming for the southern bits. It's really hard to describe how to properly fall off but know that there are two rather small ledges at the very bottom of the face of the dropoff. You are aiming for the southern ledge. If you successfully land, you're good. If not, bad news: you have to start over. Yeah it's not fun. Most people try to slalom down and fight gravity as they fall, to better steer. An easy way to do this is to just try to walk up the slope as you fall; it slows you. Go inside (you need sneak for the Mindgazers on the way) and all the way in and trade the sack to the point way deep in there. You will receive the needed item. Teleport Vazhl out and return to Zebada for the Zephyr Fan key item. You are now cleared to enter the BC. Joy.

Unfortunately you must climb Uleguerand Range AGAIN to reach the battlefield. Return to the cliffs o'doom but this time go to the SOUTHERN FACE at (F-10). Once again there are two ledges at the bottom you have to hit as you ski down the slope. You are after the WESTERN ledge (the Eastern ledge takes you to the end of the quest for the map to this zone, btw). Enter the cave there and enter the battlefield.

Bonus Tip: There is an 'easier' way to get up to the BC. Have one brave */BLM sneak their way up and slalom down to the cave while the others wait below it. Now, once the /blm is in place, have people die one by one to the rabbits/bombs/tigers below and get tractored above. A RDM or WHM can raise from below the ledge. Rinse and repeat for all members. It's messy but it's a proven tactic that's worked since the days of Genkai 1 (or ZM5: Ifrit's Cauldron).

Your opponent is Apis, a MASSIVE buffalo-type. As Todawa mentioned he does have variable immunities, keyed by the 'mob 2hr' animation. Test the waters at first to see if you can damage him at all and if not, just sit back and relax until you can. Don't rush this, losing this is agony after all the trouble you took to reach the battlefield. Nuke gradually and watch out for his hate-resetting move (I forget the name) as it will END your mages if they miscast during it.

I did this with 5.

NIN/WAR
RDM/BLM
WHM/BLM
BLM/WHM
BRD/WHM (for double-mambo on the nin tank)

All 75, except for the RDM, who was 74.

Rewards: 4k exp, Eltoro Leather, Gigant Mantle, Raise III. Everyone pulled in roughly 1.2 million from the fight.

You do not need to fall down the slope a second time. It is possible during the path up to fall down one of the holes in the ground and be in the tunnel system that leads to bearclaw.

I forget exactly which hole it is, however I think it is on the third to last stretch before the slopes. Towards the top of the area. I know my wording kind of sucks, I will see if I can get an actual <pos> sometime while I am there.

There's a few holes that lead to Bearclaw, but they go to different ENMs. If you fall down a hole somewhere else you'll end up doing a different ENM. I think the one you're referring to leads to the "When Hell Freezes Over" Snoll ENM, which is the hole @ H-5 according to some page. I havent been to that one myself. My friend fell in the hole at K-6 and found the "Follow The White Rabbit" ENM. As far as I know you have to go down the slope to do this evil buffalo ENM.

Did this today. PLD, MNK, DRK, BLM, BLM, RDM. When we entered, the BC told us that this is an 18-man ENM.... wow. Decided to try anyway since no xp loss. You fight one very large buffalo. He has different immunity levels everytime he does the 2-Hour Animation as far as I could tell. Also does TP down Plague. When we first entered, he was immune to all physical attacks. The other BLM and I nuked until he did the 2-Hour animation, then he was taking physical damage... but very very little. MNK and DRK doing very low damage hits. He also hits progressively harder as the fight goes on. He was eventually doing 300-500 dmg per swing with 1500+ damage TP moves on our melee until they were all dead. Highly recommend a Ninja tank. We ended up winning, everyone dead except I lived with 42 HP.

We got some peice of lumber worth 100k on Gilgamesh.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: At one point, he is completely immune to magic too, or else this would be a great BLM ENM :'(
