Summary

Professor Koru-Moru is currently engrossed in an experiment to create "something" out of "nothing." To get closer to the truth of alchemy, he wants you to track down an old "Thesis on Alchemy" for me.

Walkthrough

Speak to Koru-Moru in his manor after completing the "Blast From the Past" quest. He will ask you to find someone practiced in the art of Alchemy. Shantotto will tell you that she remembers that there was a student who was formerly in the school who had interests in alchemy.

Head over to the Aurastery in Windurst Waters (North). Speak to Fuepepe, and she will tell you to search in the Acolyte Hostel for a record. Head north, past the Aurastery, and note the door on the left side of the front of the building. Run between the two sides of the building, and go to each of the doors on the left. Answer the trivia questions correctly, and move to the next door. There are 3 doors, and 3 more to the right side of the building. After answering all the questions correctly (they will ask 2 or 3 other questions if you fail, then begin to loop back to the first), go back to the door on the left side of the front of the Hostel to get the Alchemy Papers.

You will get a Vile Elixir if you answer all questions correctly!

Go back to Koru-Moru. After looking at them, he will send you to get the "Lifeforce" (An egg) and the "Power of Death" (a bone).

The egg is a Warm Egg dropped by Anemone in Yhoator Jungle. The bone is a Cold Bone dropped by Doom Soldiers in Cape Teriggan.

After giving Koru-Moru the Cold Bone and Warm Egg, he will ask you to come back in a few days. Merely zoning to another area and returning is not sufficient.

Trade the items to him to get the reward.

Just to add a couple more answers that I didn't spot:

If asked who created the constellation map, it was by someone named Lagu-something.

The river next to Sandy is the ChevAl river. (I proposely capped the letter a there.)

I enjoyed this trivia, I hope theres more like it in this game, but I haven't heard of any others. ^_^

in these days of CoP BC fights costing upwards of 1M gil for mages, and often times, you have to repeat these fights multiple times (i know someone who is 0/21 on the airship BC...), you might think, why spend all that money for a few cutscenes, well, the cutscenes and access to <sea>

but once you become higher lvl, either in crafts or a job, it's not hard to make 100k, or 1M, or 5M

so, once you've bought all the items you need for your job, maybe even your 2nd job, and you don't have anything else to buy (yes, it's possible), but you're still making money, probably more than you ever have before... what's the prob with spending a measly 100k on some quest with a new cutscene

and who knows, maybe SE will add a quest later that requires this quest to be done, then think about how expensive that cold bone is gonna cost....

Yes, I also received a Vile Elixir for going 6/6 on the quiz. Did't see it listed anywhere on the quest walkthru so I was pleasantly surprised to get it. I guess I'll sell it and buy a Cold Bone to break even on this quest.

I notice for a lot of people this quest was blocking the AF quest for the wizard pestatos.
I don't know if it is b/c of a recent patch or not but today I got my quest while having this one active so no worries on that anymore. So maybe the price will come down on items b/c it isn't worth 50-100k when you get 9 or 10k return

To clear some things up
# Mar 14 2005 at 9:47 PM Rating: Excellent
The warm egg being listed as a recipe result is almost certainly incorrect. I believe there was just confusion regarding the HQ results of hardboiled egg, which of course is softboiled egg, and despite a good series of attempts out of curiosity, I have not seen Warm Egg result despite repeated regular HQs for Soft-Boiled Eggs.

In regards to the Cold Bone, the price on Caitsith for this is well over 100k now, as this is a relatively rare drop, and fighting the doom soldiers is just a pain to begin with (you wanna solo them, you better be 70ish, and depending on job, you may find it rough or impossible even then). I (pld71) and a friend (brd74) have camped these a few times, and have yet to see the bone drop (although we've seen about 50 drk test.s in the process). If you don't think this item is worth the gil... well, try getting it yourself, and see what you think then. As for justifying the cost of the quest with the reward, I have a simple response there too... don't buy it, go farm it, then you won't have to justify the cost.
And finally, as for justifying buying the bone to complete this quest for fame... well, this quest requires high enough fame just to get that if you have this quest in the first place, it is extremely unlikely that you are "questing for fame" anymore. Furthermore, as "questing for fame" is pretty much done by people who don't quest in the first place (and miss much storyline that expands the depth of the FF experience by providing valuable background and tie-ins). Since there are other people who play this game just like they would any other FF, doing all quests, missions, etc., that leaves people who "quest for fame" on a totally different page then the ones who quest for the sake of questing in the first place, and therefore no words could really justify this to someone who approaches the game in a totally different manner anyway.

Finally, can anyone VERIFY once and for all that the Cold Bone is dropped by ALL Doom Soldiers, including the ones in the Toraimarai Canal and Gustav Tunnel, as opposed to the current listing that they are only dropped by the ones in Cape Terrigan (which only appear at night, making camping them somewhat more of a tedious process)?

I wont *verify* it, persay, but..

A similar quest/mission, the bastok Fetich pieces mission, requires you to go to Pal. mines and kill quadavs for the drops. But.. quadavs in the Highlands drop them too.. so =p.

In theory they very likely do.

Being a BST and actually having seen three Cold Bones drop throughout normal leveling, I have taken an interest in the mystery of the Cold Bone. Yes, I have sold one on the Phoenix server for 50k (my partners at the time got the other two), but I still can't for the life of me understand why people buy this item.

From reading everything I can on it, the best possible reasons I can come up with for why someone would do this quest is because people either 1) are on a crusade to finish every quest possible or 2) want to get the cool title. If they are going for #1, then they surely have a lot of gil to waste but I guess I could sort of understand #2 if you were into that title.

That said, I researched whether or not it would block BLM AF hat as suggested here and that does not appear to be the case. Essentially this is still a mystery to me and I haven't yet seen a really good reason why someone would pay ~60k to finish a 9-10k quest. It just doesn't make sense. I tried to track down some of the people in the sales history for the item but haven't had much luck yet.

Just thought I'd share my research on this, even though I've basically found out nothing satisfactory. ^^;

I also fall under category one.
I simply like to complete any quest I open.

It took me a long time.

I had once gotten a Warm Egg in Yhoator, but didn't know what it was for, and sold it for 10k.

It took me months (of casual hunting when I was in the area from time to time) to get another one.

In fact, I think eventually a friend bought one for me when he saw it available.

I bought my own cold bone. I can't remember what I paid for it.

Yes, it's a little ridiculous to sink so much money into apparently pointless quests, but the quests are the meat of the game, to me.

All that leveling bullsh[/i]it is simply a means to make myself stronger and more capable of doing and surviving more exciting other things.

I suppose a person with 40/80 mog safe slots devoted to soley to furniture (which would probably net around 3 million gil if liquidated) is simply the kind of loony that is willing to go out and pay 100k to finish a quest with no tangible reward, just for the experience of having done it.

The cold bone and the warm egg free up the "nothing matters" quest which may be blocking the start of "The Root of the Problem" quest (AF1-3 Wizard's Petasos (hat)). Once old Koru-Moru is locked into something you cannot get him to do anything else. The 50,000 gil price tag for the cold bone might have something to do with that quest locking and unlocking potential, for those who want their AF hat. What category at the AH is the cold bone in?

You don't have to go back to door one to start over if you miss a question. Just knock on the door you missed a question of and it'll ask a new question.

All six doors won't have the thesis...but when you are done with the quiz, go back to the southwestern door and a male taru named Katzun-Nattzun will appear. He'll give you a key item named. 'Thesis on alchemy'

    Rest is as posted above.

I had some different quiz questions, I'll post that under Valyana's post.

Nutaris just finished this, got all six questions answered correctly the first time through. He got an extra prize of a: Vial Elixir "This potion instantly restores some HP and MP." RARE

well, I was until I botched an answer (sorry, I wasn't sitting there with another computer, or a printout of all the answers)... Now, with the loss of the Vile elixir, and the cost of the bone exceeding the cash reward, this useless quest's gonna sit open until there's a pressing need for me to complete. Looking at the stupid-*** spawn of the mob that drops the item, I see many long hours of irritation and disgust ahead if I seriously consider farming the stupid bone.

Whatever... nice quest, if you CHEAT. Or have a picture-perfect memory for every useless detail in Vana'diel.

Yes the base synth for warm egg costs 400 gil [actualy its under 200 on my server fire (125) + bird egg (50) + water (10)], but this recipe normally yields hard-boiled egg. Warm Egg is listed as the HQ result on this site, but so is soft boiled egg. I know from experience during the easter event that soft-boiled egg is the normal HQ1 synth, as I did this recipe about 6 times and got 3 hard-boiled, 3 soft-boiled at cooking skill 64. So the Warm Egg if indeed it can be made from this recipe (might be faulty info - maybe its only a drop and somebody got confused about the name for soft-boiled egg and sent in an errant correction) would have to be the HQ2 synth which would mean that its going to be extremely rare at low levels (maybe even impossible to get) considering as when im making cooking ingredients for using in higher level recipes I get a HQ2 synth maybe one time in twenty or so and thats at level 78 cooking. So while in theory you could make it using a low level cooking skill you would spend way more than 4-5k in materials and a large amount of time as well unless you are mind-bendingly lucky.
