Summary

Zeid, the sole master of the way of the Dark Knight in Vana'diel, has been sighted in the Palborough Mines. If you seek him out, he may make you an apprentice...

Walkthrough

Completing this quest will allow you to change to the Dark Knight job.

Gumbah is on the 2nd Floor of the mines in a house. He sends you to Palborough Mines. You might have to talk to him a few times before he does, but eventually you will see a cutscene with Werei and Volker which talks about the Palborough Mines.

Once there, board the ship on the third floor at (H-8) and you will receive a two-handed sword. Equip the sword and start killing things. You need to kill at least 100 enemies with the sword in any area. Only Warriors and Dark Knights can equip the sword. Once you kill at least 100 enemies by dealing them the final blow with the sword, go to Beadeaux and a cut scene will be triggered that flags you as a Dark Knight.

NOTE: Do not kill an enemy with a weapon skill, as it will not count toward the 100 you need.

Quest Series

This is part of the job flag quest series. Other quests of the series include:

Pet helps!
# Feb 28 2012 at 11:35 AM Rating: Decent
I got the quest, but my warrior job was still level 1. I found an ingenious method for unlocking the sword while leveling - I go BST sub, get a pet, have the pet fight a mob until it's low, then run in and one-shot with the sword. Took a little pratice to get into the rhythm so the pet doesn't kill it, but now I'm getting every kill. The nice thing about this is, I don't have to wait for the weapon's painful swing cooldown to start another combat, I can have the pet run in and go to town, then draw the sword and finish the mob.

I'm up to 60 kills. Still very annoying, but not nearly as slow as trying to just melee them on my own.
Easy to re-obtain.
# May 31 2010 at 3:34 AM Rating: Decent
In case this hasn't been mentioned, you can easily re-obtain the sword if you ever toss it. Just head to the mines again and ride the boat on the third floor. When you zone into Zeruhn, you'll get a short cutscene of your character walking up from the boat. They'll pause for a moment and it will say "You found a chaosbringer." and then it'll put the sword in your inventory.

I never bothered unlocking DRK since I had no interest in leveling it, only took the boat as a shortcut after getting the sand for the synergy quest. As I zoned in it gave the CS and gave me back the sword.
Agh!

hmmmm just wondering would the bats in the Fall Harvest 2008 quest count towards the 100 quota? or would they have to be normal enemies?
Fall Harvest 2008 Bats
# Oct 27 2008 at 9:05 PM Rating: Decent
I'm finding this out right as we speak. I need less then 20 more kills before I can tell you if it will work. The bats die in a single hit with this Great Sword equipped, even though I am dropped to a level cap of 1.

I'll repost with my information.

EDIT ::::: It works. Just to let everyone know. Now WOULD be the best time to go about killing for the Dark Knight quest. You can one~shot all of the bats...

Mob kills
# Jul 31 2008 at 12:13 PM Rating: Decent
If you use a weapon skill but it doesn't kill the mob, does it count as a kill? Also if it doesn't self-destruct when you fight it but it is a self-destructing mob does it count as a kill? ex. Bees, Goblins
Mob kills
# Aug 26 2008 at 10:11 PM Rating: Decent
The only thing that matters is that the killing blow is a normal strike with the sword. So the Weapon Skill can't kill the mob, and it can't self-destruct. Bees are fine, as long as they don't die because of Final Sting. Same applies to Gobs.

so my war is only lvl 3, so it took awhile to kill any mob but there was one mob who took like 20 mins to kill. A stupid little tiny mandy decided it would be fun to use photosynthesis, twice in one fight. Now being a taru at lvl 3 I wasn't strong enough to kill the mandy cause the +5 regen, anyways it took 45 hits to kill the lvl 1 mob. Do the Math to figure out how long it really took. This is going to be a long quest >.>

It should be anything... That's what most people do in fact, go right outside the mines into North/South Gustaberg and kill worms!

does it matter what difficulty the mob is to you? if i was to do this with a WAR at lvl 30, could he go around kiling too weak to be worthwhile mobs in N.Ronfaure?

# Apr 29 2007 at 11:56 PM Rating: Decent
I'm sure you're aware of this already considering you posted this back in '06 so this is for anyone looking at the forum after and wondering why there was no response... The answer is no, you can't equip a sword for WAR by changing sub job.
ok

# Oct 26 2006 at 10:55 AM Rating: Decent
question.. what is this about killing a 100 more mobs and getting a better sword [Deathbringer?] when you go back... do you kill 100 mobs, get DRK THAN do it, or kill 200 mobs in one go than get cutscene. this is the only thing that confuses me
Deathbringer info?

You kill the first 100, go get your cutscene to become DRK, THEN head back to get the quest to kill 100 more. You'll trade your old weapon to the spring in Gusgen and get the upgraded weapon in return.

I cannot reinforce enough how much i recommend WAR/BRD.

I decided to unlock DRK, i have loads of other jobs but only WAR can qiled this stupid weapon.

So my WAR lv18 / BRD 9 killed 100 things in East Ronfaure in 55 mins. I recommend cheap food like Meat Jerky's (you will need 2) and have Valor minuet on at all times.

Have fun!

I subbed Bard and it did help.

I lost count of how many mobs I killed.
After leveling 2 times I figured that I killed more than enough XD
killing bees
# Aug 16 2006 at 6:47 AM Rating: Decent
A friend of mine and I went about this quest yesterday. We ran off to S. Gusta and killed bees. I kept a rough count of the bees I killed, then killed some extra, and I received the cutscene the very first time we entered Beaudeaux.

My friend, on the other hand, kept an exact count of the bees he killed, and he didn't feel like he needed that many extra bees. His weapon skill with greatsword was substantially better than mine, so he occasionally killed using a weapon technique. But when he entered Beaudeaux, there was no cutscene for him. In fact, when we went back and killed more mobs to complete his quest, we found that he was substantially behind the 100 mark (if the magic number is indeed 100). We figured there could be two possible causes for his lack of success.

First, it could have been his using his weapon techniques to kill bees. I had no skill in great sword, so I had no choice but to kill all my bees the hard way. Or, second, his higher weapon skill could have caused him to do more damage, so that a number of his bees may have died from countering with Final Sting.

So, moral of the story: if you want to play it safe, just don't use your weapon techniques, and, if you kill bees, take care not to count the bees that suicide on you with Final Sting.

So here's an interesting dilemma... I forgot to even CHECK my inventory before setting out to meet Zeid in the mines... got on the boat, went thru the cutscene. and WHAM... you are unable to attain Chaosbringer...

Went back to the mines... no boat... now checking Beaudeux - his next point of call - wondering if I'm totally screwed on getting Dark Knight with this character

I did the same thing, went in with full inv and couldn,t get the sword. What i did was to go back to palbouro mines and went to the boat and got the same cut scene and this time i was able to recieve the deathbringer.
Went out to prove the point and ...

As is suggested elsewhere in this thread, get a stack of darts and throw one at each mob - especially if your throwing isn't levelled - helps to keep track of the numbers.

If the mob is killed by anything BUT the chaosbringer it doesn't count, and that includes dia, bio or even an arrow.

If you kill the mob using {Hard Slash} or {Power Slash} it WILL still count! What will not count is if you do a weaponskill with someone else in the party, ie: liquefaction or whatever, and that kills the monster - that one doesn't count!

You can use ranged attack - I had a problem with one-shotting mobs though, and of course, those don't count either!

"You must kill the monster with the blade and the blade only."

I opened the quest while on BST/WHM, killed the mobs in 3 different areas and even went and changed jobs in between, tele'd and warped, and then went to beadeaux as WHM/BLM to get the final cutscene - just have the sword in your inventory!

For the actual slaughter (best word for it) I used WAR/MNK. I didn't use any food at all for this, mainly because there were no singles on the AH and I wasn't going to buy a full stack!

I went up on the hill in South Gusty, on sheep and gobs, because they link! The hardest part about this is that darned "you must wait longer for that action"!!! I voked one sheep, ran around and gathered up half a dozen more for a small train. then killed them all one after the other. Run back through and repeat on the gobs. Make sure you move around so your current target is between you and your next target and you will auto-target onto the next one when the first one dies!

The really long delay on that sword is horrible, if you can get a WHM to come haste you it might go easier! I started out with about 720hp and between the sessions probably got hit for about 200hp total - perfectly doable for a lvl 30+WAR without resting, you just need the determination to keep swatting away at them! Oh, and even with Great Sword capped on WAR, I still missed about 5 times total!

Good luck!

So, I just took this GS and my level 1 warrior and went out to kill bees. I got to level 5 around the time I was sure I had at least 100 kills. Then I bought a Butterfly Axe and continued on, skilling up Great Axe then.

Got Drk that way, and levelled Warrior. It was a little slow, but probably faster than doing either of the two individually. As long as you're using attack food, it's only ever 1-2 hits per kill regardless of level. Just buy a Rarab Meatball and go for it. They last 3 hours, and give the largest attack boost possible at lower levels (30%). Also, if your server has a similar economy to mine, they're pretty cheap.

I did this awhile ago on remora. I had a completely unleveled warrior. You should reach 100 kills afew hundred xp into lvl 4, give or take depending on how they check out as.

I had no problem getting drk, i kept an exact count. I did not use weaponskills at all, and i mostly did worms and bats, bees when there was nothing else.

I've determined, just from reading a little and using some of my own knowledge, the following things:

==================================================================================
-Do all the $#!^ in the walkthrough at the top!

-Kill 100 enemies with the Chaosbringer (Great Sword). Not 98, not 99, but 100!

-Obviously, it must say "[You]defeated the <t>." and this must result from a
regular swing of the sword. As in, no death from magical damage, magical HP decay, Weapon Skills, or Job Ability suicides.

-Once you kill 100, or 100ish to be safe, go to Beadeaux. You should get a cutscene. (Doh! The guide at the top says that) If you don't, go kill a few more
and try again.

-Go level up your new Dark Knight job!
==================================================================================
Extra things:
----------------
>You have to kill the monsters as a Warrior because, OMG!, you don't have Dark Knight yet!

>It seems that you only have to have the Chaosbringer with, so to speak, the blood of 100 enemies on it in you Inventory.

>Anything, and I mean ANYTHING, I haven't mentioned, read the guide at the top BEFORE you ask about it!

>That's all I can think of now...

>Um...pie?

>Please don't ask anymore questions that this post answers! The first page of posts kills me with repetition!
