Summary

Note: This is an escort quest. You can only have one escort quest active at a time. Other escort quests include Escort For Hire:San d'Oria, Escort For Hire:Bastok, Escort For Hire:Windurst, All By Myself and The Big One.

You can only undertake a specific escort quest once per conquest tally.

Walkthrough

First, you can only have one Escort quest active at any time. This includes the three obvious ones (Escort for Hire in Bastok, San d'Oria and Windurst), and also two which aren't quite so obvious: All by Myself in Bastok and The Big One in the Tavnazian Safehold. If you have any one of these five quests active, you can not accept another one. Any of these quests are easily deactivated simply by talking to the same person who gave you the quest. You can only complete one Escort for Hire quest per conquest week, although the other two quests appear to be able to be completed the same week as an Escort for Hire quest is done.

Talk to Dehn Harzhapan in Port Windurst to accept the quest.

The first person to zone into the dungeon will get the cutscene that prompts the start of the quest. That person has to talk to him to start the quest, although from that point on anyone can stop and start her. Do not talk to the escortee until everyone who is in the party is in the dungeon. Anyone not in the zone when you begin the quest (i.e. still zoning) will not get credit for the quest. Additionally, although you can go in with an alliance, only the people in the starting person's party will get credit for the quest at the end. If you want to do this for more than 6 people, you will have to do it multiple times. Finally, if the escortee dies, you only have to zone out and zone back in to restart the quest (keeping in mind the zoning rules for starting the quest).

The first time you complete any of the three Escort for Hire quests, you will receive 10K gil and a page of Miratete's Memoir, which grants anywhere between 850 & 1500 or so experience points. Any repeat times will not give you the gil, but will still grant you Miratete's Memoir.

There are four potential routes in Garlaige. Depending on which course is taken, the difficulty of the quest will vary greatly. You will need at least 4 people to complete the quest in order to open the banishing gates. Be sure to stop Wanzo-Unzozo before the banishing gates as he has the ability to run right through them.

You do not need to clear everything in his path, only things that aggro. Undead with AoE drain will suck HP out of him, so make sure you have someone keeping an eye on his HP at all time. You cannot Sneak, Protect or otherwise buff him, the only thing you can do is heal him. If you keep him alive until he reaches his destination (where he will stop of his own accord) within the 30 minute time limit, talk to him and you receive a Completion Certificate.

Return to Dehn Harzhapan to receive your reward.

My linkshellmates and I can activate the San d'Oria one, but for some reason, with Hero Fame in Bastok, Sandy, Windy and Jeuno, and no other escorts activated, we cannot get access to the Windy or Bastok ones. Anyone else have a similar problem.

If you have the San'doria Escort opened you can't open the Windurst or bastok escort unless you go to san'doria to cancel it 1st.

ok A few 75 friends and myself have been doing this quest repeatedly. So here is some real information that is actually useful. 1. There are indeed 4 paths. They range from super easy which requires you to kill like 6 mobs and ends past the first banishing gate (two 75s can easily duo this, lasts like 5 minutes), to utter hell downstairs with the weapons. 2. Wanzu does not go inside the rooms very often (if ever) so dont waste time (like we did at first) killing mobs inside the rooms. 3. These posts say he goes right through the banishing gates while they are closed, this has never happened to us, he stands against the wall until we open it up.
4. If he heads downstairs right off the bat without going through the banishing gate, you better have at least 4 70s ready to rock cuz he goes into the tunnels where all of the stupid weapons are. We actually died last night for the first time after getting aggro from about 8 weapons at a time. Dont try using reraise cuz the weapons just dispel it anyway. Our setup was 75 war 75 drg and 58 rdm, but there were just too many weapons. An alternative strategy would be to stop wanzu out in the middle( not inside the tunnel) and then pull the weapons one by one, but like i said there are a ton of them in there. 5. Make sure that you talk to him if you see him standing there cuz you only get like 15 seconds to get your completion certificate before he leaves !! cuz if you dont and he leaves then you have to do it all over again.
6. If you are downstairs, and fighting weapons and it looks bad, just turn and run for the zone, even though it is far, weapons are slow and you can make it easily as long as you dont make a wrong turn. If you do die, make sure you dont die in the tunnels by the weapons or you may as well just hp if you dont have tractor.

We weekly do all three main escort quests and The eldieme Necropolis is by far the easiest one. The other two (CN and sh??adel) just depend on the route.
We learned all of this the hard way, hope this helps. Squallf and friends from Garuda

So hes not the funnist person to follow around..

Just a word of advice.. when he gets aggro'd, and links something... meaning like bats..

KILL WHAT LINKS FIRST!

If you kill what aggro'd him first, then the link, he will run away after the first thing that hit him is dead.

Ok, after having done this (or at least tried to) several times, I guess I'll pop in my 2 gil.

So far, I have discovered at least 4 different paths that he can take. 1 is super easy. 1 is OK. 2 are just plain hell.

DO NOT TALK TO THE NPC UNLESS EVERYONE IN YOUR PARTY/ALLIANCE HAS ENTERED THE CITADEL!!!

Sorry for the caps, but we learned this the hard way that if you talk to him before everyone has entered, those who are still outside will not get the reward, even if they come in and follow the NPC to his destination.

Depending on the route he takes, you'll need anywhere from 4 to 18 people (also depending on your levels, but 4 minimum because 3 of the routes I witnessed involved going beyond the first Banishing Gate).

In order to start/stop his moving, you have to talk to him. And of course, you have to be in range to do so (hence the "you have to catch him" part).

You cannot sneak or invisible him, but you can Cure him if he gets hurt.

As far as I can tell, he cannot fall down any holes, but he will walk right through the Banishing Gate even if it is closed, so you gotta act fast with stopping him, hitting the switches, and getting him and everyone else through the gate. I have never seen him go to Banishing Gates 2 or 3, but we ran out of time whenever he started going in that general direction.

Hope this all helps.

I've tried talking to Dehn, but all she says is that it'd be nice if a reliable adventurer happened by. How do I get her to assign the quest?

Can u have a high lvl person or two run thru and get everything to link and then either Zone the train or just die or whatever. But my thinking is if u have them link and agro it all in there then u should be able to run thru pretty easy.

All with subjobs, of course, but you get the picture.

This was easy. He goes through the first Banishing Gate, to a room at H8. We ran ahead of him, stopped him before he got aggro, killed the mobs, then let him run again. When we got to the end, our party went "that was it?" It was so easy. I think we did it in about 10 minutes.

Good luck! have fun!

so this explains that tarutaru monk i've seen at the entrance to garliage every once and a while. i wondered why he'd appear there. i just thought that square set him there to pick off the mobs that zone. 'cause he sure seems to handle those with ease...

Sure you can, but that isn't the point of the quest. The point is to get the NPC to where he needs to go, not yourself. You can't make an NPC use items.

This quest requires a good party of 55-60+. The NPC will aggro every mob in the area and will link other mobs if not careful.
Ran out of time on this quest, we had to start over. To much aggro and linking mobs prevented us from completing.
#REDACTED, Posted: Jun 14 2004 at 7:21 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) why do u want to do this quest if u know u can't fight the mob solo?

it sounds like an easy task but i'm guessing that the areas he'll be running through are IT where a full group of mid 20's to 30's are the only ones that can even complete the quest without a hitch...grr

I received the same quest for San d'Oria where one must escort a NPC through The Eldeime Necropolis. Here is a little more info that you might find useful if you choose to undertake this quest:

1) Dispite the fact that their name will appear in light-blue like a party member, you can not sneak or invisible the NPC. Consequently, you must simply kill everything in it's way.
2) You can start and stop the movement of the NPC by targeting and selecting it. It will not initially start moving until select it for the first time.
3) The NPC will stop and fight anything that aggroes it. You can not just run away from things that aggro it.
4) I have killed off the NPC numerous times from when I've had other stuff to do in The Eldeime Necropolis. As far as I know, there is no negative consequence of doing so, besides having to start over. If you fail, you simply have to zone out and back in and the NPC will be there again (you don't have to restart the quest).
5) You have 30 minutes from the time you enter the zone (Garliage Citadel in this case) to complete the quest -- not 30 minutes from the time that you accept the quest.

Hope this helps!

If you can stop the NPC, are you saying that you can just let him sit there and wait for 30 min for quest to complete?

No. He must reach his destination for you to receive your reward. In the case of Garlaige Citadel, it is deep within the dungeon, through the area where Tainted Flesh/Vault Weapons/etc. spawn. Have a good-sized party/alliance of 55+ to deal with everything that aggros on the way. I saw a pretty big party doing this when I was searching for coffer keys, and lucky for them we had cleared out most of the weapon mobs in their path, and all they had to deal with was the Tainted Flesh (which is not easy to kill).

From what I gather, the basic strategy is to have someone out in front of his running path to search for potential aggro/linking mobs, then stop him short of the encounter and pulling the mobs in so you can control the linking situations that arise if you just let him run his own course.

There's a similar quest at Port Bastok, you'll get it from one of the visitors by the bar counter at the Steaming Sheep, he tell's you to meet someone and escort her through Crawlers' Nest. That quest is called "Escort for hire (Bastok)" so I'm guessing this is called "Escort for hire (Windurst)".

im assuming that you must follow him and kill off any mobs that may be chasing him. let him get his but whupped and its quest incomplete. im also going to assume that he runs slower then you.

Reccomendation if the above is true:
Get an alliance going to save his tail.

Full 18 people. one team goes a little bit ahead of him (Assuming his path is the same), the other team stays with him completely, and the other team stays behind just a bit so that they will see anything that may be chasing. if the front team gets involved in a fight, the middle team moves up to the front, then the following team moves to mid, keep him safe. thats what im gunna venture a guess as to what to do.
#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 05 2004 at 9:00 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) i dont think any north american players are capable of such tasks... this is too complex and well thought out for any NA players... unless of course the people in your party are you friends or LS people... other than that.. i honestly have to say NA players are pretty dumb....

Obviously you're not to AF level.. or Rank 5+ level.. or limit items level..

Or perhaps you turned off your shouts in Jeuno and never hear others organizing things.

RE: assumption

This is so true. It's easy to say that NAs have good organization and are willing to serve more than their own interests, but it's a lot harder to actually put it into practice, isn't it?

I've seen people shout for hours in Jeuno for help and never even have one person lend them an ear. Conversely, I've rarely seen the same JPs shout for help for more than a few minutes there.

I'd love it if people would prove me wrong and actually start assisting their fellow strangers, but the simple fact is, it does not happen nearly as often as most of us would like to think.
RE: assumption
# Jul 21 2004 at 8:46 PM Rating: Default
I think citing AF coffer key hunts and limit item groups as examples of good organization is a mistake...far too many NA players just get what they want and take off as soon as possible

How nice... I'm a NA player and I have no problem organizing to do quests like this. Post something productive next time. :/

Does anyone know what the "... he takes off running his course" means? Anyone have a map they could mark up with the path he follows? I hope it's not possible for him to fall in the holes! 8)
