Summary

If you want to learn how to become a puppetmaster, you must bring an automaton to Iruki-Waraki.

Walkthrough

Talk to Shamarhaan at the fountain in Bastok Markets to begin this quest. He will direct you to someone in Aht Urhgan.

Travel to Aht Urhgan Whitegate and talk to the Tarutaru named Iruki-Waraki at (K-9) and then go to the Automaton Shop at (I-7) and talk to the Galka named Ghatsad. Once you have talked to him, go to the northern port and ride the boat to Nashmau.

Once you are in Nashmau, take the Northern exit into Caedarva Mire. In Caedarva Mire, go to (I-6) and zone into Arrapago Reef, being very careful of the Chigoe and Imps (truesight). From there, go to (H-10) and select the ???. Return to the Automaton Shop in Aht Urgan Whitegate and talk to Ghatsad again. Wait one game day and talk to him again. Talk to Iruki-Waraki again and choose your name for the automaton.

Deodorize?
# Nov 30 2008 at 7:19 AM Rating: Decent
I didn't use deodorize at all. I did this and cor quests together without maps. I just studied them a bit online then did from memory. Flawless run. Easily done as 30Dnc using "Spectral Jig". I never saw any imps but I did go during the day. Of course if u do 30dnc/15rdm then u would have ur "Spectral Jig" and "Deodorize" available for other job unlocks...like the run thru "Ranguemont Pass" I did for Summoner element.

Just my 2gil worth.
can i sleep the imp??
# Dec 26 2007 at 10:22 AM Rating: Decent
Since the imp has true sight can i sleep at 31 rdm and run or can possibly gravity anf run like hell or will one of his hits knock the sh*t out of me and possibly die.

Easy
# Aug 15 2007 at 1:07 PM Rating: Decent
This is by far the easiest job quest to get, because if you are going for Corsair you can get the key item while obtaining Corsair with no further steps beyond Corsair. In fact getting this job takes less steps than Corsair, so why wouldn't you go get this job while you're getting Corsair? You'd be foolish not to do both at the same time.

Also it's interesting to note that as long as you click the ??? from above the ??? on the ship you should not get aggro from the 2 Skeley's and Lamia(sp?). I stood right in front of the 3, 2 of which were facing me when I clicked the ???, I figured since I had reraise on I could live with the aggro since I was in a hurry. But I recieved no aggro while clicking the ??? from above instead of from below it. I had Sneak still on but no Invis so maybe that had a part to play in that, but idk I play it safe while playing it reckless, hence the reraise and staying as far away from them as possible, lol.

I ran it once as WAR 50/DNC 25 for Spectral Jig, and it wore at the wrong time. Got aggroed by a Chigoe and died. I had just unlocked BLU also, so I changed to BLU 1 and used Sneak Oil and Prism Powder. They lasted longer than Spectral Jig.

In addition to the one list of names Iruki-Waraki offers you, you can also change your Automaton's name, as with Dragoon. The NPC is Abda-Larabda. He is located in the Automaton Workshop at the coordinates of (I-7).

The payment is 9800 gil, and you must have Puppetmaster as your main job. It doesn't work with sub job, like Tateeya (NPC for adding new parts to Automaton). A nice, organized list can be found here:

Sneak, Invisible, Deoderize? Psh

Everyone I've talked to about this quest told me you can't do it without Sneak, Invisible, and Deoderize, but I managed to

I went as THF37/NIN18

Basically, I'd take a couple of steps (in first person view) and then stop. Anything moving, I knew was a Chigoe

You can avoid them easily until the last tunnel (not including the one to zone into the reef)

Then, I just hit Flee and sprinted past all of the mobs in that little section and zoned into the reef

Once I got to the pirate boat, I just waited until the Enchantress and the THF were far enough away to where I could safely click the ??? and get the cutscene

It took me 3 times

One of them, I just forgot to talk to the guy in the workshop

First try Invisi wore with no warning. Like my fiance who tried before me I got nailed by the 3 Chigoe and died. I forgot reraise (which probably wouldn't help, I'd raise myself and die again :P )and I ended back in Aht Urhgan. Second try I knew what I was looking for so I had deodorize, sneak, and invisible on all the way to zone. No problems. Got to the ??? with no problems at all. I'm glad that is done. Phew!

I was lucky that I didn't run into any imps. Only one I saw was one that a party was working on. It is easy enough to navigate even if you don't have a map. Get a map of the internet and all is well. Some mobs I guess aggro to smell? Not totally sure on this one, but the quest was easily done as 42WHM alone.

Aggro
# Jun 15 2006 at 8:35 PM Rating: Decent
Aggro Wise in these areas is very easy to slip past. Just make sure to have Sneak/ Invis up and only mobs to really worry abotu if these are up are the Imps since they are ONLY truesight mobs in this area that you will run across. When you get into Arrapago Reef the ??? is right on the boat not far from zone entrance to the left. Just when u are about to enter the boat put Sneak/Invis up - I noticed in the way of this ??? there was one Skele right near it and one Lamia somewhat close too - Right when u are ready to click the ??? take invis off and click. Do CS then when out resneak/invis as needed and walk off boat and either continue on to do Cor quest or Warp/ Walk back to finish Pup. And btw the item u get after speakign with Ghatsan is called "Animator" which is what is used for communicating actions to your Puppet and is needed in inventory whenever Pup is main or sub otherwise you will not be able to tell it anything to do

Lvl 1 ftw
# Jun 01 2006 at 8:41 AM Rating: Decent
Did the quest early this morning, after memorizing the maps I still felt a little freaked bout goin into an area where every fiend seems to be on crack and steroids. In the end decided to go in as a lvl 1 rng, taking it slow, and using widescan to locate the imps i got to the reef without problems. Once there a pt was lvlin off of the undead so got the key item and blood ported back, used 6 prism powders and 5 silent oils. Rng lvl 1 ftw.

Awful Default Decent Good ExcellentHe tells me that anyway, I've talked to Shamarhaan... he doesn't say anythinng and his puppet says "Dancing now. Please observe." and that's it.

It sounds like you are talking to him with a job that is under lvl 30 ... try again with a 30+ job.
Several corrections
# May 07 2006 at 12:02 PM Rating: Default
There are several corrections that need to be made to this post.
Firstly, this is a flag quest so the min lvl is 30 to activate it not 1.
Secondly, this quest is triggered in bastock not the expansion area. The guy in bastok markets near the fountain. He has a puppet, can't miss him.

yea even though the page is updated theres still a couple things wrong. cant remember most lol, but im fairly sure the chigoe arent truesight mobs. i helped a few people get pup and cor and passed by the tunnel with the chigoe several times w/o agro. the only time i died to one was when an imp agrod me and removed my sneak/invis. another time my friend got an agro by one cuz he didnt have sneak up. so just from my experiences im guessing they arent truesight

Lowest level to get PUP without lv75 buddies?
# May 06 2006 at 11:56 AM Rating: Decent
This was such a pain in the butt. As a 30MNK/SAM, I was one of the lowest-levelled people in Aht Urgan to begin with; I knew I was gonna die, so I switched to a 2THF once I talked to the necessary NPCs. No maps of the Mire or the Reef, so I had to look it up and memorize my path; I made it through most of the Mire, but coming out of the second tunnel I got nailed by the Chigoe. There's three on the uphill slope, untargetable with no names over them until they aggro - I think they have Truesight, too. Got past them using Perfect Dodge but got nailed by a Lamia about ten feet from the zone line - someone else ran by a few seconds later and died about five feet from it, heh. Rinse and repeat, still couldn't get past the Chigoes five tries later.

Then came my stroke of luck! Iwanna was kind enough to Tractor and Raise me, and he and his companion covered my *** at their expense while I ran for the zone (which admittedly was right there, but still.) A party was in the Reef and had cleared out my way to the ???, and I was set! Many thanks to Iwanna on Bahamut! Without your help, I'd still be a naked lv2 running screaming past Imps and lv75s.
OP is Wrong
# May 04 2006 at 10:57 AM Rating: Default
The main post up there is entirely misleading. It has the wrong starting NPC, and it says that Chigoes are "True Sight".

The starting NPC is Shamarhaan. Go to Bastok Markets near the fountain to find him. THEN go talk to the Taru in Whitegate. You may have to talk to Shamarhaan with a Lv.30+ job in order to start the quest.

And as for the Chigoes, they are not True Sight. They don't even detect by sight. They aggro smell, so either bring a 20+ WHM or RDM, or someone who is level 50+ who has a WHM or RDM subjob. The only other alternative is to buy deoderizers (which are hard to find), or fight the Chigoes. They have fairly low HP, less than 1,000 each I believe, but they have an extremely fast attack speed, and they do a lot of damage. Also, you can see them on the ground, but you cannot target them until they aggro. This is useful, as you can avoid them this way, but you have to look very carefully.

umm, no chigoes do not detect by smell they track by it. they detect by sight as do most perisites. Also you can't target chigoes but you sure as hell can see them on the ground.

eycee is correct. Starting NPC is in BASTOK MARKETS near the fountain is a man dressed in outlandish fashion and entertaining everyone with his puppet. Talk to him for a cutscene.

Tehnchi, were you on a lvl30++ job when talking to him?

The hardest part of getting this job was to wait and nag the shop about my copy of the expansion. Doing that and with all maintenance and updates I had some time to get quite wellinformed, got maps printed out and so on, so once I was ready it didn't take long time.
I had just done BLU too so I had a new shiny level 1 job. Once you got the quest started you don't need to be 30+ for the actual sneaking around, like EndrilRM pointed out. And I read somewhere that you can avoid those flies by going morning or afternoon. Well I didn't see any. I ran a little too far in Caedevra Mire and the Imps and Lamias started to wake up but I managed to sneak past them easy anyway.
Got killed on the boat just after getting the antique automaton but with a 1BLU it was just a free ride to my HP in Whitegate. :)

The second hardest part of this was to buy the attachements for my doll Moppet in Nashmau (I wanted one of all so I could "learn" to equip them all before I left the area). My lowlevel mules had to work their a**** off for those 120k or whatever it was, lol.
Just finished it.
# Apr 28 2006 at 9:14 PM Rating: Decent
I just finished the pup quest and it was probably the easiest job quest I've done so far. I finished it as 37drg/18sam. Just take silent pots and prism powders and keep yourself good and hidden. ^-^ Easy easy easy! The only part that sucked was aggroed by flea on the way back and got killed. :-P
Pup=ownage
# Apr 28 2006 at 5:14 PM Rating: Decent
from diffculty really based off of a sam75s view haha... from easy to a lil tricky

Bluemage>>puppetmaster>>corsair

but i gotta say for this job it rulesand worth unlocking it...the only downside is the infaltion towards Cacoons....you'll see....but once you get your puppet with all the right attactments like STONESKIN, and PROVOKE AND FLASH *cough* nasty cold there , ...but all i gotta say is you can make your Melee based Puppet into a tanking GOD Vs a PC player tanking wise *beatthat mister 3-5 blink ninjas!*
Yeah I Rock

just wanted to say I completed Pup and Cor quest as a lvl 29 War (I downleveled midquest) Pup was easy beyond belief as long as you have some invis/sneak and know where you are going
High level help
# Apr 27 2006 at 11:32 PM Rating: Decent
From what I noticed when doing this quest is that you just have to be a very high level, at least 50 if you in a strong groop, if not, then maybe 70+. Also, while your at it, you might as well get the COR job becuase you have to go to the same area. I can't say the distance the 2 "???" are from each other, no map.

you have to travel east of the PUP ??? then north through the iron gate (with either a thf to pick the lock or a Lamian Key) then head back west to the boat with the COR ???

its not that hard do, just have to get through the iron gate and watch out for the Lamia and skele's

Having a bit of trouble because I'm level 35 and I don't have any friends 75 to help me with this so it isn't exactly "easy." I take the north exit to the mire, make my way north to I-7 for the key, then go into the cave at I-6? I think I know my way from there, but I'd just like some confirmation if this is pretty much right. Almost had it this morning before getting jumped by about 5 imps hanging in front of the tunnel at J-8.

I think you're thinking of the Corsair quest... you don't need the Lamia key at I-7 for the Puppetmaster quest. Nice if you get it, but not needed. Just get to the cave at I-6 and you'll be in the reef. There's no mobs in the reef area until you get to the boat--and the boat is your location. Click on the ??? at H-10 and get the heck out of dodge.

If you're level 35, and worried about deleleving, here's what I did (I'm 47, so I know how you feel!). Use a lvl 1 character (My level 1 was ranger, which helped) and use sneak oils and prism powders. That way, if you die, you don't lose any exp.

Sneak oil and prism powder is a bit pricey right now, but if you've leveled alchemy up to a decent bit, you shouldn't need to buy any, just make it.
RE: Alright

or you could try what i did and use lv 10 bst with no armor, or weapon, or powders and oils...
youll get killed at least once but if you try enough times its hard to fail

I'm so damn tired of people posting the basics of quests and noone bothering to mention the details. Allow me.

This is definetly easy. Everything up to the Reef Trip. Get at least 3 75s and have one able to heal, not just as a sub. You should be ok then. All you do is go in, find the ??? in H-10, and get out. Have your HP set in Aht Urhgan Whitegate so you can finish it easily. I gave the automaton to the Galka at 22:00 and came back at 1:00. Done. XD

Anyways, long story short, this is easy but level 75s will die if not properly healed. Just ask Shrimpy and Mikehawk. (Gilgamesh Server.)
Once again.

You do not need any 75's to help with this quets at all. Maybe you're getting this quest mixed up with the Cor quest. All you need is Sneak/Invis to get to Arrapago Reef. Hopefully you have better luck than some other unfortunates and the chigoe won't pawn you, lol. The only thing that makes the Cor quest difficult is the Imps, other than that, you can solo all three of the new advanced job quests...easily.
