Summary

The president has ordered a full-scale investigation of Zepwell Island. You are to travel to the Quicksand Caves located in the central Altepa Desert. Report to Iron Eater for a briefing.

Walkthrough

To start the mission, go to any of the Bastok gate guards after donating enough crystals to get your rank points bar at about 1/3rd full. The mission NPC will tell you that you are being sent to investigate the Quicksand Caves and that you should go talk to Iron Eater for more details.

Go talk to Iron Eater, located in the Metalworks by the President's Office door. This will trigger a cutscene with you, Iron Eater, and Volker. They will explain a few more interesting details about the mission and then send you on your way.

Your next stop is going to be the Quicksand Caves entrance located at (G-6) in the Western Altepa Desert zone. Make your way south through the hallway to (J-8), then turn west to the weighted door at (H-8). Go through the door heading south and you will find another weighted door -- go through it.

Once you pass through both weighted doors the path will dead end in a small area with a ??? at (G-11). Checking the ??? will spawn three Antican NM's which you will need to defeat. Clear the room before spawning the NM's.

A recommended order for killing the NMs is:

Once the three Anticans are dead, check the ??? again for a cutscene with Zeid. He will tell you a little story and then instruct you to head to (H-8)in the Quicksand Caves where you will find a mural on the wall.

At this point, head to the far southwest entrance to Quicksand Caves from Western Altepa Desert. Head to (C-11) to find a tunnel leading south that takes you off the map. Follow it around to an open area with a ramp leading down into the Quicksand Caves.

Once inside, follow the right wall the entire way. At (K-8) you will come to another weighted door leading east. Go through that door and continue to follow the caves. You will arrive at another weighted door at (G-8) facing east. Again, go through that door into a smaller room with another door.

Once through the second weighted door and through the door behind it, you will notice the mural on the wall to your left, and a ??? on a small pedestal. Check the ??? for another cutscene with Zeid and some interesting story line.

Once that is done, head back to the Metalworks in Bastok and talk to Iron Eater for another cutscene and to complete the mission.

Here's my strategy for my solo (AH gears + AF), no merits but need to use an echo drop. Sneak pop doesn't work in this mission (the NMs are true sound). You don't need to kill all. Just kill 1 but make sure the other 2 NM depop b4 u kill. I have 300 enfeebling skill for sleepga (but I forgot my dark staff). Make sure bring some echo drops:

1. There are 3 ants (ep to dc) in the room. To clear them, just run in with sneak and then sleepga, kill one by one and sleepga when needed.
2. Once cleared, buff up and use elemental seal b4 u click ???. Be ready to put all enfeeb gears + pluto or dark staff. They r resist to sleep (especially the pld) but can sleep. For me, I es+sleepga once they pop and all of them sleep but the pld woke up almost instantly and knocked off my stoneskin. I casted sleep2 right away and this time he slept better.
3. Now quickly sneak up and follow the way back to zone entrance but don't zone yet. Wait 4 the train and the NM b4 u zone. For me, the pld was already chasing me with a army of ants so i zoned right away.
4. When i zone back, I don't see the nm so i sneak up and go look 4 them. I found the pld was walking back by himself. He aggro me even with me having sneak so I pull him back to zone but rest of the mobs are starting to pop back so they linked and i need to zone again.
5. Zone back and only the pld is at entrance this time. It's now fair 1 on 1. The fight is not hard. Just watch out for the spider at entrance as it will aggro if too close. The rest NMs already depop by the time I killed him (takes a while as pld 2hr).
6. Run back with sneak and click ??? for cs.

Just gone beating this mission into the ground with my buddy. I'm a 75 MNK/NIN, and he was a 75 RDM/BLM. Total cake-walk, even with me messing up at the start and targetting the BLM instead of the PLD first(thus requiring the BLM to be slept an extra time). The PLD was the hardest, and only because he kept Cure IVing himself. when he Two houred, I just used formless strikes. I two houred on the BLM, finishing him off with about 10-15 seconds left on my two hour to use on the WAR.

I definetly agree with what others posted. The guide up top is crap, but the guide by the poster below me was very informative. Certainly should replace the one up top. PLD, BLM, WAR is definetly a good order. I guess we lucked out, the BLM when he popped casted Poisonga II(didn't matter anyways, we had psn pots on anyways).
Nice Guide

Bah, what the hell is this junk? Did you just half-*** a guide thinking that it would make you important? For shame...

Anyways, I am doing Bastok 8-1 right now as I type this guide for everyone to look over. Hope you don't mind Mr. Troll...

======================================================================

To start the mission, go to any of the gate guards after donating enough crystals to get your rank points bar at about 1/3rd full. The mission NPC will tell you that you are being sent to investigate the Quicksand Caves and that you should go talk to Iron Eater for more details.

The next step is to go talk to Iron Eater, located in the Metalworks by the President's Office door, for those who forgot. This will trigger a cutscene with you, Iron Eater, and Volker. They will explain a few more interesting details about the mission and then send you on your way.

Your next stop is going to be the Quicksand Caves entrance located at (G-6) in the Western Altepa Desert zone. It's entrance #6 on the Quicksand Caves map found at FFXI-Atlas.com

Make sure you sneak throughout this area because most things will check EP to DC to Lv.75's. From there you'll want to make your way south through the hallway to (J-8), then you will turn West and head to the end of that hallway where you will find a weighted door at (H-8). Go through the door heading south and you will find another weighted door.

Once you pass through both weighted doors the path will dead end in a small area with a ??? at (G-11). Checking the ??? will spawn three Antican NM's which you will need to defeat. It would be very advisable to clear the room before spawning the NM's.

*NOTE: Bring echo drops!!* Jamming Wave is a pain.

Party setup was:
SMN75 (me)
RDM70
BST75
WAR75
BLM61

We had someone check the ??? right after we killed the mobs in the room and were resting, so the NM's got a jump on us. A few people had a nice chat with the grim reaper as we killed the NM's. Best advice would be to kill the BLM mob first, then the PLD mob second, leaving the WAR mob for last.

Triarius IV-XIV - (BLM)
Princeps IV-XLV - (PLD)
Centurio IV-VII - (WAR)

Once the three Anticans are dead, check the ??? again for a cutscene with Zeid. He will tell you a little story and then instruct you to head to (H-8) somewhere in the Quicksand Caves where you will find a mural on the wall.

At this point you are to head to the very bottom left entrance to Quicksand Caves from Western Altepa Desert. Head to (C-11) to find a tunnel leading south that takes you off the map. Follow it around to an open area with a ramp leading down into the Quicksand Caves. For the map on FFXI-Atlas.com, it's entrance #4 in Western Altepa Desert.

Once inside, make sure you cast sneak and make your way through the caves. You will want to follow the right wall the entire way. At (K-8) you will come to another weighted door leading East. Go through that door and continue to follow the caves. You will arrive at another weighted door at (G-8) facing East. Again, go through that door into a smaller room with another door.

Once through the second weighted door and through the door behind it, you will notice the mural on the wall to your left, and a ??? on a small pedastal. Check the ??? for another cutscene with Zeid and some interesting story line.

Once that is done, head back to Bastok and talk to Iron Eater for another cutscene.

Congratulations!! You've just completed Bastok Mission 8-1!!

========================================================================

So, how about that for a guide? Much better than the one posted, and much more informative. I hope you all find it helpful. As I stated above, I wrote this as I was doing the mission that night. Feel free to rate or leave comments if you want. Maybe this will be posted as a guide instead of that Troll post.
My Grandma can write better Guide then this!

I dont remember the but from the (C-11) entrance, follow the passage around, pass the first weight detection door, and go in the second (It will be on the right) Kill the mobs in this room then click the ???

For god sake! Don't even write a Guide if you don't even know. Not only it make you look stupid, but it hurt many that read your Guide. I can forgive Guide that are short and not very well written, but atleast it's accurate. Right when I read "I don??t remember..." I knew right away I should look elsewhere. Today, I lead my team to do this mission. Everyone was depending on me, but it took us the whole day to do this. No, not because the boss was difficult or the mission was hard. But thanks to this ridiculous lame Guide! We run around like idiots for many hours because the Guide don't remember the 2nd ??? or making some dumb guess from his memories. In the end, this guide did not help. What help is I go over and read some other post below and figure things out.

The rating for this Guide is a mere 1. The lesson here is never start a Guide with "I don't remember..." We come here to read this guide so it can help us get thing done quickly and as less painful as possible, not to get frustrated.

I just did this with 75RDM/NIN and 75RDM/BLM. Not all too hard if you both know what to do and do well under pressure. Definately a walk with a good NIN and a few mages. /cheer Keilei ^^

had 4 ppl to our group, rdm, rdm, blm, nin

all the info below is very helpful.
just some quick info on the nms.

you fight them in a small room but they are really no threat.
you clear out the first 3 mobs that are in there.

apply poison pots. if you feel like it(we forgot to)
sleepga kill pld(prin)> blm(tri)> war(cent)
the blm and war can be easily kept at bay w/ sleep, gravity, bind, silence.
these NMs are weaker than the the 3 mobs that you just cleared from the room.

(definitely low60s, vs. the normal 65s in the area)

don't forget to check the mural in the other part of the Quicksand Caves.

map info: required- 1 galkan or 3 tarutaru or 2 of ea. other race for doors.
enter
-Quicksand Caves@G-6 of Western Altep Desert
-Quicksand Caves H-8> G-11, 5th map down on link.
-to D-12 Western Altep Desert for mural.
-Quicksand Caves K-8, 4th map down, > H-8, 7th map down.

Just did this with war74, sam75, drg75 and me rdm75.

First time we did it we were killing blm first and we had a real fxing problem with the pld. It woke up and my sleep kept getting interrupted (war's voke wasn't ready i don't think and sam was /thf). My first sleep on it wore off immediately, then 2nd one was met with that Resist! rubbish that plds do.

I died, our war died, then drg and sam finished the mobs.

Fight take 2, and what I suggest you do, KILL ORDER: pld, blm, war.

Much easier.

Have your mage take poison potion in case the enemy blm opens with sleepga (I forgot but was lucky because both times he didn't). Pop the mobs, silence the blm, seal and sleepga the mobs. Kill pld, kill blm, kill war. Teh Endz.

Me (DRG75/RDM37) and Justlnwar (RDM75/BLM37) Just Beat the hell outa these SoBs. One of the hardest battles i ever did. We got to the room and killed the decent chalenge ants there. Lol we got 2 Tests War and Rng i think. Then I popped the Nms. Blm and Justln both sleepgad at same time lol. Thank god for fast cast. Then I engaged blm and killed him no trouble. Then pld woke up so killed him next. He was a tough SoB. Took about 3min to kill. Then We started to kill War. Everything going good til he 2Hs. I was getting hit 200 per hit with Mighty strikes. So i had about 400HP and Super Jump =/. Then he starts trying to *** rape Justlnwar. So Just kites it til i get back hate with him staying around 200-400HP the whole time. lmao. So then we finish him off while an ant repops. Then Just slept ant and i touched ??? for key item =D. FUN BATTLE with 2 PPL but dont try this at home kids.

Tried doing this with a small party. I'm an RDM/NIN, basically crushed a good majority of Bastok missions with small parties, or alone. Did 7-2 BCNM duo with a 75 DRK fairly easily. This mission is just giving me a headache.

First went with an 65RNG,70MNK,26DRK (Yes, I said 26 DRK, got to love LS determination). I tossed up sneak and popped the NMs. Sneak spawn does NOT work here, to my surprise, the Anticans begun attacking me immediately, knocking off my stoneskin pretty quick. DRK engages, gets hit for like 500 damage, he's dead. I die from a Firaga III while trying to deal with the WAR and PLD attacking me, I die. RNG dies soon after. MNK warps with a scroll and survives with like 70 HP.

Tried it again the next day with a 71 WHM to support me. Unfortunately her enfeebling magic was only 142 so things were looking pretty grim from the start. Start off with ES + Sleepga, she sleeps them all. I silence and start attacking the BLM. She was unable to sleep them upon waking up so I had to change my target and sleep the enemy, then attack the blm again. Very annoying, and nearly impossible to maintain a solid tanking structure. BLM eventually goes down after about 3-4 minutes, working on PLD now.

Now of course i'm just 1 RDM/NIN, my damage wasn't bad on them, but a PLD is a PLD and killing one for a mission is never a quick task. Warrior kept waking up and breaking Stoneskin making my life more difficult. PLD eventually gets down to 1/2 health, BLM mob repops in the room.... I attempt to run outside the door to fight it free there. No good, BLM aggros. Not only that, the spiders outside the door aggro and eventually link 2x... Thus, 4 enemies on me now. Ya..you can guess the outcome. Death x2.

WHM RRs, Raise III's me. Like an idiot, I go back to the door where the Anticans were and they reaggro me. So now I am running away, training spiders and ants. I was actually pretty close to the zone until a BLM Ant towards the end casts Stun of all spells on me...death...I home point. About 2700 EXP lost all together.. wonderful.

Morals of this Post
- Have high enfeebling for this. Anticans are Dark-based for one.
-74+ RDM/NIN and a 70+ BLM can duo this mission with ease.
- Remember your Echo Drops.
- Anticans are a pain in the butt.

Part I

Gateguard > President > Gumbah(B. Mines) > Iron Eater

Part II

1. Western Altepa Desert (G-6) -> Quicksand Caves
2. When you enter, Head to (H-8) on this map (All sneak first, then walk to [H-8])
3. At (H-8), Use the Weight Detection device [works with 1 Galka, 2 Hume/Elvaan/Mithra, or 3 Tarutaru]
4. Head south, zoning into a new map. Pass another Weight Detection device (@ H-10) on this 2nd map. The ??? (Galka Statue) you need is just to the south located at (G-11).
5. Clear the room first, then spawn the 3 NM:

Triarius-BLM > Princeps-PLD > Centurio-WAR (All use 2-hour abilities)

The first BLM spell can be random, it's not always Sleepga but it's good idea to prepare for such an event. All these 3 are about ~lvl 60 NM Antica.

6. After you win, everyone should touch the ??? to get an event.

Part III

1. Next Teleport-Altep/Escape, zone back into Western Altepa Desert, and zone into Quicksand Caves located in the furthest SW corner of Western Altepa Desert (@ D-12).
2. When you enter, Head to (K-8) on this map and trigger the Weight Detection device.
3. Head east, zoning into a new map. Pass another Weight Detection device (@ G-8) on this 2nd map.
4. The ??? is located just to the east (@ H-8). Touch it for a numinous cutscene.

Then return to Iron Eater in the Metalworks for a final cutscene.

Recommend: 61x12 alliance or 72x6 party

Correction:
Talk to Gumbah if you haven't already to give him the letter from 7-2.

I had to trade in 4 stacks of crystals before I could get the mission.

Then talk to Iron Eater in front of the president's office, then head out to the desert.

Site kinda vague so i knocked this up after doing the mission earlier, hope this helps.

Directions

Past the place labelled "Weight Sensor" is another small area of Quicksands I couldn't find the map to, but it's pretty simple to find the ??? after going through, just go past various Girtabs and Antica until you find yet another weight sensor door, go through that and you will find the room with Tapestry ??? in.

Those directions are not great. The entrance to QSC for the second part is not at C-11 in West Altep, the tunnel that is not displayed on the map that leads to the QSC entracnce that you need is around that area.

Once you enter that area, hug the right wall, do not enter the first weight door, wait till you reach the second and go through onto a second map. It is easy to think you need H-8 on the first map and end up on the wrong side.

Any specific requirements? I pushed my Rank Point to full and still unable to get this mission. The guards keep asking me to deliver the letter to the president and when I talk to karst, he says he is busy. @.@;

You have to deliver the letter the president gave you to Gumbah, he is in the mines, near the alchemy shop in a building, he is the Galka Child that you see in many of the cutscenes.
